TESTIFYING before the House Energy and Commerce Committee last week, Energy Secretary Steven Chu was asked about something he said in September. "Somehow," the Nobel laureate had told The Wall Street Journal, "we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe." At the time, gasoline in Europe was going for around $8 a gallon. Did the secretary, Florida Representative Cliff Stearns inquired, still want to see US gas prices rise that high?
"In today's economic climate," Chu quickly replied, "it would be completely unwise to want to increase the price of gasoline. And so we are looking forward to reducing the price of transportation in the American family . . . by encouraging fuel-efficient cars (and) developing alternative forms of fuel."
The congressman gave the knife a twist.
"Your statement, 'Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe' - doesn't that sound a little bit silly in retrospect?" Stearns asked.
Stearns didn't ask why Chu had stopped being "silly," but it doesn't take a Ph.D. in political science to know that a craving for higher gas prices is one of those things you quit talking about after you join a presidential administration - assuming you want the president to be reelected.
Yet Chu is hardly the first person to have called for making gasoline more expensive. Many environmental activists, climate alarmists, and mass-transit fetishists want to see fuel costs rise. The steeper the price at the pump, they reason, the fewer miles Americans will drive, the less petroleum they will consume, and the greener their lifestyles will become.

The statement of belief made in September is the real opinion of this socialist. The current opinion is just a lie like all of the other ‘for public consumption’ horseshit Zer0’s administration is squeezing out.
Plus, it allows those pushing for "cap and trade" to invest in what may be the most lucrative scam of "skimming off the top" since the mob sold off their last Las Vegas casino.
Perhaps someone should remind the libs of what happened when gas was $4 a gallon... yes, the very same gas whose taxes pay for their money hog mass transit systems. What happened? People simply drove less, or bought more fuel efficient vehicles. The price of gas came down and with it, all the extra gas tax revenue.
Of course they are probably one step ahead of us in that they'll simply raise some other tax to pour into mass transit. But to be fair, I do think urban mass transit is a good thing. It is just run very poorly and inefficiently.
Our transport system is based on long haul trucking, not trains like Europe’s is.
High gas prices don’t only hurt us personally at the pump, they impact EVERYTHING we buy, esp. groceries.
If the price of gas skyrockets again while wages stay flat, this recession will extend for a lot longer.
Only if you don't have a car or can't afford to park it in the big city parking lots. It sucks riding the bus. Been there, done that..
One of the most bizarre arguments of the left is that “it doesn’t make sense right now.” The argument appears on tax increases, cap-and-trade, health care, gas taxes, etc. Here is my question: Isn’t that argument admitting that these policies are damaging to the economy? And if one admits that, why would I ever want to make these changes regardless of the state of the economy? (The answer is, of course, that doing economic damage is the point. The sheeple will accept it better when times are “good.”)
Regardless of the level of dependence on trucks/fuel and prices, to artificially skyrocket the price of gas to a par with Europe is insane, even if these creeps ever actually spent the inflated difference on alternative energies (they can't and won't). This is politicism and CONTROL, pure and simple - control our lives, control our living, and control our FREEDOM. Bow down to the masters for they are omnipotent.
As far as long haul - probably not coast to coast, but definitely north south, e.g. I 95 or I 81.
We travel those routes fairly often and see trucks from all up and down those corridors.
I agree, trucks carry a lot of stuff. Making the price of their fuel arbitrary based on lifestyle control is an artificial control mechanism based on a desire for just pure domination.
