Admiral Mullen stated: “On behalf of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and their families, Deborah and I take great pride in congratulating you on your successful efforts to formally recognize the first day of every May as Silver Star Banner Day. Our Nations many governors, mayors, county commissioners, and service organizations, as well as the Silver Star Families of America, have worked hard to make this happen, and deserve our thanks.”

“This is far more than just a day set aside for remembrance, but rather a means of recognizing the many-faceted efforts to create wholeness and healing for our wounded veterans and the families of the fallen. America’s wounded warriors and their families have made sacrifices that deserve a lifetime of gratitude.”

“You civic remembrance codifies your community’s empathy and is crucial to our Nation’s well fare. Efforts like these help to connect those in need with the great sea of good will that you represent, all through out this country.”

“Due to efforts like yours, our Nation and our military are better connected. The Joint Chiefs and I salute you for your continued support to the men and women of our Armed Forces and their families. We are proud of efforts like this one, and fellow citizens like you. You are making a great difference on behalf of our Nation.”

Steve Newton, Founder of the Silver Star Families of America, agreed. “Without the help of our friends at the Marine Corps League, the VFW, the Forty and Eight, the League of Cities, the Conference of Mayors and the National Association of Counties, and the hard working volunteers at the SSFOA, we could have never gotten the word out. And we especially want to thank the Governors, County Commissioners and Mayors across the United States who have shown us that patriotism is alive and well and who have helped us send the biggest grass roots “thank you” ever to our wounded and ill.”

Newton stated that the SSFOA would continue to contact counties and cities even after May 1st. “We will continue to collect proclamations supporting our wounded and ill until we reach 5000 communities.” He hesitated and then added, “well, we just might continue until every city, county, and state in the Nation joins us in thanking those who have given up so much for us and for freedom around the world.”
