Swine flu fears close schools in NY, Texas, Calif

sti Lamonaca's illness started with a high fever, a cough and achy bones, just a couple of days after she returned from a spring break trip on the beach in Cancun with friends. By the weekend, her voice was hoarse and she was wearing a surgical mask.

The 18-year-old senior was one of a dozen students from several New York City high schools who traveled to Mexico earlier this month, and she thinks she has swine flu. Health officials have confirmed that eight students from her school have been infected with the strain, which has caused a deadly outbreak in Mexico. And they predict the number will grow once additional students, including Lamonaca, are tested.

Authorities in the United States have confirmed 20 cases of swine flu.

I just heard ON CNN that the hospitals in NYC are taking inventory of Tamaflu and other anti-virals and the military has sent out a worldwide caution. Perhaps this isn't much, but if the powers that be are this nervous...that should tell us something. I think it's BLOAT and pray time.

Any excuse to stop the learnin’ process.

I got a daughter, 18, graduating high scool with almost a 4.0 gpa. Every single college entrance exam she takes ranks her ineligible to take college level classes and is forcing her to take high school level catch up courses in the fall.

When the scool gives out A’s, a student thinks she doesn’t have to work any harder.

My daughter is another casualty in the failed education system. If her dad holds the high school accountable and keeps her out for let’s say 8 days, they should deny her graduation based on attendance issues and make her stay for another year. She will hate and never talk to her dad again. At 18 actually, I can’t force anything.

Are you her step-dad or are you speaking in third person?

I’m not trying to be too harsh here, but you didn’t realize that she wasn’t doing what she was supposed to do. Does your daughter like to read?

I would recommend that you get your daughter tested for a learning disability (like dyslexia). Another year of school will not help her if she has a learning disability. She needs to be taught differently if she has one.

I realized in 3rd grade that one of my daughters wasn’t reading well even though the school district said she was fine. We had my daughter tested, and she had auditory processing problems and dyslexia. She went into a program for dsylexics (Barton Reading) for 2 years, and now at 12 she is reading up a storm.

I have a nephew that just flunked out of college at 25. His dad (my borther) died after a long battle with cancer when my nephew was a freshman in college. Because his parents were busy with the cancer I think they missed that my nephew migh have some learning difficulties. I thought it was really strange that my nephew does not like to read. That is one of the big signs for dyslexia.

Good luck to you and your daughter.

Perhaps I’m the only one with lots of neighbors from Mexico. They go back there from time to time. Their kids go to school with my kids. Am I paranoid in being a bit concerned? Does anyone think U.S. or local health departments will even mention this?

The Obama Flu has really rained on the One’s 100 day celebration by the media. I bet he is really ticked off. May be he will have to work next weekend!

Got it in one...I just don’t think this is the be-all of it. I am not saying panic..but I think some prudence is in order. What concerns me is the fact the disease has spread like it has (yes, air travel, I know), and the mystery on why there are only reported fatalities in Mexico? Here is another question, most influenza strains originate in China IIRC? How does this one start in Mexico? Might Patient Zero be someone who’s on a Chinese freighter right now who had paid a visit to some girl in Tampico or Veracruz? Food for thought...food for thought.

My daughter is another casualty in the failed education system

She is nearing graduation and her parents did not know that she wasn't academically qualified for college?

Parents are part of any education system and blaming the school or "the system" only shows parents who are bucking responsibility.

But that is typical in today's society, isn't it?

I’m getting in the shower.

It won't save you from the flu. ; )

If I recall, when I was younger and through most of my life the "flu" was too common and I was hit several times with it.

Now we are all going to die because of it unless we become hermits to survive?

Our country can't afford to duck and cover in unison because of fear.

4.0 gpa is as hi as you can get. so she was theoretically doing great. obvioulsy they either handed out A’s like water or the course were very very weak.Thats the kind of thing would be much more difficult for a parent to pick up on.
