On her radio show of April 24, Dr. Laura Schlessinger engaged a caller on the subject of priestly sexual abuse. Dr. Laura said she was stunned that the penalties for abuse were not more severe. She continued by saying, So because of that I no longer, you have not heard me in all these years tell anybody to send their kids to Catholic school, where in the past I did that all the time.
Catholic League president Bill Donohue commented as follows:
I will not lose faith in Dr. Laura simply because she is not up to speed on this issue, but I cannot sit back and indulge her cluelessness. Quite frankly, as anyone who has read the John Jay Reports on this subject knows, the vast majority of abuse took place between the mid-1960s and the mid-1980s, at the height of the sexual revolution. The bill may have come due in 2002the year the Boston Globe exposed the Boston Archdiocese as the epicenter of the problembut this hardly justifies the conclusion that nothing has been done to correct the situation in recent times.
Indeed, I would challenge Dr. Laura to name a single institutionprivate or publicthat has instituted a zero tolerance policy, save for the Catholic Church. Every staff person and volunteer who works for the Church has had to undergo the most rigorous training seminars on the subject of the sexual abuse of minors, something unmatched by any other organization. Indeed, if Dr. Laura wants to know which institution is responsible for the lions share of this problem today, she needs to take a serious look at the public schools. And then she might investigate why so little reform has been instituted. I can save her the timeits called the teachers unions.
Heres the number of credible accusations made against the over 40,000 priests in the last few years: 2008 (10); 2007 (4); 2006 (14); 2005 (9).
Dr. Lauras moral compass remains one of the finest indices of sanity in the nation. Indeed, we are big fans of hers. But she does need to correct the record.

So “Doctor” Laura is advising parents to not send their kids to Catholic school for fear of molestation.
She needs to bone up on the Naughty Teachers List. Plenty of molestation and corruption withing the public/pubic school systems.
But that is treated like 10,000 isolated incidents and not something that stinks from the top down.
Dr Laura, you're clearly out of your mind you non-doctor you. *Cough* stupid *cough*
So in California he isn’t Doctor Kissinger? I addressed all my Ph.D. teachers in high school as Doctor __, even though they were Ph.D. Ed.
So what? I fail to see that what you posted has anything to do with the story. So you don’t like Dr. Laura, do we care?
So, what’s your point? I work with physicians and doctoral level psychologists every day, and some are the most idiotic people I’ve ever met. An acedemic degree does not a wise person make!
I’ll vouch for Dr. Laura’s wisdom and common sense any day of the week.
Militant
“Nobody is allowed to use ‘Doctor’ unless they are a medical doctor or ... a professor in the psychological field with a clinical license.”
Somebody better tell Dr. Dre.
But I doubt that is a real law. And a PhD IS a doctor.
Not defending Laura necessarily. She gets it right sometimes, and wrong sometimes. But the whole “she isn’t a real doctor” is not only misinformed but irrelevant to most particular criticisms of her.
I'm stunned also that penalties are not more severe. What is wrong with parents that they do not teach their children to report these crimes immediately? I know what the decisive, community-imposed penalty for a priest sexually abusing a young boy would have been 100 years ago, and I don't know why it's different today.
... Every staff person and volunteer who works for the Church has had to undergo the most rigorous training seminars on the subject of the sexual abuse of minors, something unmatched by any other organization.
Training? "Now, Father, remember, priests are not supposed to have gay sex with young children." I don't think that training is the answer. My vote is for monitoring and swift consequences.
Ah, a little sanity on his goofy thread...
Be Ever Vigilant!
Technically, Jesus said not to call anybody “Father.” But we know there is some wiggle room there, don’t we, Kelly? :-)
I have listened to her show twice...and it took all i had to stop the urge to projectile vomit all over my vehicle....she is basically an idiot ( not as bad as pat buchanan, but getting close )
Well, I think Donahue is taking the right approach on this. Dr. Laura isn’t a bigot. She just needs a little educating on this issue—which you won’t get from the media or the establishment.
Instead of insulting her, convert her, and then you’ve got one more spokesperson out there helping to spread the truth, or at least not continuing to spread lies with the rest of the MSM.
As for calling herself “doctor,” that’s commonplace with PhDs. She doesn’t pretend to be a medical doctor that I’ve ever heard of.
I don’t care if her background was in plumbing, frankly. People don’t listen to her because she calls herself a doctor.
“Nobody is allowed to use ‘Doctor’ unless they are a medical doctor or ... a professor in the psychological field with a clinical license.”
you have not heard me in all these years tell anybody to send their kids to Catholic school
I’m a lawyer. I have a JD, a Juris Doctor. If I was a particularly jerky individual, I could rightfully insist I be addressed as ‘Dr. Grant.’
The ‘Dr’ title is no big deal.
I'll take the "Doctor of Democracy" every time!
