But . . . but . . . Mexico has socialized medicine!
This is a Bicentennial Minute. Eleven Americans, ranging in age from 9 to 50, have come down with swine flu, the Associated Press reports: "All those people either recovered or are recovering; at least two were hospitalized."
In Mexico, however, the toll has been much worse. "About 70 deaths out of roughly 1,000 cases represents a fatality rate of about 7 percent," the AP notes. This is far higher than the 2.5% fatality rate from the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918-19, although the latter was many orders of magnitude more widespread, killing 40 million people world-wide.
"The Mexican rate sounds terrifying," the AP writes. "But it's possible that far more than 1,000 people have been infected with the virus and that many had few if any symptoms." Which is somewhat, though not entirely, reassuring.
The AP dispatch is titled "Swine Flu Worse in Mexico Than US, but Why?" There's no definitive answer, but here's one of the possibilities:
Access to medical care has been an issue in Asia, where a rare bird flu--which does not spread easily from person-to-person--has killed more than 200 over the last several years. Maybe Mexican patients have also had trouble getting medical care or antiviral drugs, some have speculated--even though the government provides health care.
Wouldn't this paragraph make more sense if it ended ". . . because the government provides health care"?

So much for government-run health care.
There were so many deaths because Mexico didn’t realize early in the game what they were playing against.
Saw a picture this morning of armed guards at the hospitals in Mexico and mobs of people trying to get into the hospitals there...some starting to riot.
Welcome to government run healthcare America!!
I’m still skeptical.
This seems like over-hyped bullfeathers. Lots of people get the flu every year. This one’s not acting particularly nasty north of the border - and this poster is thus far convinced it’s no moreso south of the border.
There is not a higher proportion of people who succumb to the flu in Mexico, IMO. I think there are just a (whole) lot more Mexicans who have had the flu, than anyone has let on. After all - it’s Spring Break tourist season. Mexico relies heavily on tourist money. And a lot of Mexicans self-treat, otc from the anything-goes Pharmacias there.
Perhaps it’s just, a whole lot of Mexicans either have, or already had the flu - and only the few most serious cases even sought medical attention?
And the flu really is just that.
The flu.
Depends on whether or not you have money and where you are.
Kind of like if you need a heart transplant you want to be rich and in Louisville. If you're in Chicago such a thing is totally unavailable due to medical malpractice suits, so it doesn't matter how rich you might be.
Swine flu ping

And who was President when swine flu?
In all the coverage over swine flu I have yet to hear a hint about closing the border and mandatory screening of those comming in here.
Napolitano is “Absolutely up to the Flu Challenge”...
salvation!

So much for government-run health care."
Both statements are ridiculous.
There aren't any 'anti viral drugs' available for this flu strain. It doesn't matter what kind of health care system you have, the virus has to simply run it's course.
Like any flu, if your basically healthy, you'll survive, perhaps without even feeling any symptoms. Others will get sicker, but recover fine. Those with weakened immune systems and other health problems may die from secondary complications, such as developing pneumonia. It isn't the flu itself that kills these people.
A flu vaccine is many months away, because it takes time for GOVERNMENT labs to isolate the virus, breed it up in eggs, extract a vaccine and multiply it.
Thanks to Hillary Clinton, we don't have any labs that produce flu vaccines, we rely on labs in the UK and Canada to provide us our flu vaccines.
Current flu vaccines will have no effect on this strain of flu virus, and even by the time a vaccine is created, it may have mutated to a point where even that vaccine is useless.

Antiviral Drugs and Swine Influenza
Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) with activity against influenza viruses, including swine influenza viruses. Antiviral drugs can be used to treat swine flu or to prevent infection with swine flu viruses. These medications must be prescribed by a health care professional. Influenza antiviral drugs only work against influenza viruses — they will not help treat or prevent symptoms caused by infection from other viruses that can cause symptoms similar to the flu.
There are four influenza antiviral drugs approved for use in the United States (oseltamivir, zanamivir, amantadine and rimantadine). The swine influenza A (H1N1) viruses that have been detected in humans in the United States and Mexico are resistant to amantadine and rimantadine so these drugs will not work against these swine influenza viruses. Laboratory testing on these swine influenza A (H1N1) viruses so far indicate that they are susceptible (sensitive) to oseltamivir and zanamivir.

Becaue there have been a lot of deaths in Mexico, and because anyone outsaide of Mexico seems to only develop mild symptoms, one has to ask, what's different in Mexico?
The obvious answer is that mexico city, Pop 20 million, has been circulating this flu among themselves for a much longer period of time and a lot more people than is being reported on.
The more people you have exposed to ANY flu, the higher the dealth toll.
In North America, not counting Mexico, there are 40,000 deaths from the common flu every year. Nobody runs around shouting "pandemic" every other year.
The only risk of "pandemic" there is, is the media causing one. After all, they need to sell papers, to hell with the rest of the economy.
This is nothing but a regional flu that has been around a while, and is being trumped up by the media and CDC, trying to make itself look like it's important and not just a giant bloated useless UN entity.
Not that there is anything to worry about anyways since it is obviously a weak virus that doesn't cause much if any symptoms in most people.
If your are a sickly person, then stay home and don't come into contact with people, because the vaccine you had this year won't work on it.
I just sent this on Congress.org to 0bama and my Federal Congressmen.
I don’t know when or where the Swine Flu pandemic started. The Israelis are calling it Mexiflu or Mexican Flu. So we can safely assume that it began with the unsanitary conditions in Mexico. Now Mexico is larger than just the border towns and the Mexico City. There’s a lot of farm land out there and there is a lack of healthy sanitation services in the farmland. We all read our history books, we all know this to be true.
In Mexico, however, the toll has been much worse. “About 70 deaths out of roughly 1,000 cases represents a fatality rate of about 7 percent,” the AP notes. [http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124085154600159863.html] This is far higher than the 2.5% fatality rate from the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918-19, although the latter was many orders of magnitude more widespread, killing 40 million people world-wide.
WHY would Mexicans have trouble obtaining the needed health care? After all MEXICO ALREADY HAS SOCIALIZED MEDICINE. Yes, you know that. Mexico provides Universal Health Care to all its citizens (probably NOT it’s illegal immigrants, however.) So WHY are the sick in Mexico not receiving the medical attention and the drugs they need to survive the Mexican-Swine Flu??? Why are they dying in a Country with Socialized Medicine???
THAT is the big question. IF as the current President and the Democrats plan the United States had Universal Health Care, could the USofA expect the same or larger number of DEATHS due to the Mexican-Swine Flu? PROBABLY because “Universal” does not mean “Accessible” and “Socialized” does not mean “Available.”
Scuttle the plans for Universal or Socialized Medicine and CLOSE THE BORDER BETWEEN THE USofA and MEXICO!!! NO Amnesty. All illegal immigrants MUST return to their home Country, they can take their “citizen” children with them and those children can decide when they’re “of age” if they want to live in their home Country or the USofA. There is NO law that says “citizen” children cannot return to their parent’s Country.
Then when that is accomplished, we can turn to other basic needs in the USofA that the Constitution gives the Federal Legislature the right to make decisions on. If it’s listed in The United States Constitution, Article 1, section 8, then it’s in your range of power to regulate. And if it’s in section 9, the Federal Legislature has No Power At All to regulate it.
Ping (Thanks DvdMom!)
This swine influenza A (H1N1) virus is sensitive (susceptible) to the neuraminidase inhibitor antiviral medications zanamivir and oseltamivir. It is resistant to the adamantane antiviral medications, amantadine and rimantadine.
Before you make “ridiculous” statements yourself, you may want to buy a clue.
NOW we’re suddenly worried about illegals bringing flu in the country????? Hell, for the last 50 years they’vce been bringing in TB, hepatitis, dysentery, parasitic diseases, drugs, gangs, murder, cholera, typhoid,...and you’re worried about the f****** swine flu??????????
I seriously doubt those figures. More like 70 deaths in about 8 million cases.
My statements are no more rediculous than the news station I repeat them from. If anyone is rediculous, it's you. Buy a CLUE yourself. This isn't just a swine flu virus, it's a combination of 3 different ones. It shouldn't even be CALLED swine flu, but because one retarded reporter started calling it that, the retards just lined up behind him and did likewize. Who's in what line is obvious.
I am not overly concerned about this strain of flu. You want to know what keeps me up at night? There are evil people, as you are reading this, who are working on biological agents that have the capacity to devastate this country. Meanwhile, Obama, Pelosi and company are more interested in going after the very people who have the ways and means to stop them. I simply cannot fathom our “leaders” being this idiotic.—JM
That's why this strain is different than the normal "swine flu" you read about in the general information section on swine flu, and the anti viral drugs that it's susceptible to.
They've since found that it ISN'T ordinary swine flu, that it is actually a mutation between 3 different flu viruses, which AREN'T susceptible to anti viral vaccines.
