Grandfather returns home after months in Mexican jail

(CNN) -- An elderly grandfather was greeted with hugs and kisses from his family in Washington state after returning home from months of what he called false imprisonment in a Mexican prison.

The 88-year-old's ordeal began in January, when he went to Mexico with grandson Gary Chrisman Jr. for inexpensive dental work, family members said.

The pair ran into trouble in Algodones, Mexico. At a convenience store, the younger Chrisman went inside to buy soft drinks while his grandfather waited in the car.

The younger Chrisman had been photographing the area and approached a woman in the store about snapping shots of her daughters. He offered them $25; they agreed, and he took a few pictures of the teenagers' faces.

At that point, the Chrisman family says, the mother demanded more money from Gary Chrisman, he refused, and she called authorities, alleging that he had tried taking pornographic pictures of her daughters.

"Gee, let's go to a third world hell-hole for medical care and then interact with the natives. What bad could possibly come from a plan like that?"

The story fails to mention that the U.S. collective IQ dropped two points upon his return.

When I worked at the State Department there were several nations that were described as “T*rd World”. Mexico was one of them.

Anyone dumb enough to go to Mexico, Jamacia or comparable hell holes is taking a huge risk.

Or, we can let these criminals come to America and vote.

If he didn’t come back with swine flu, he should consider himself lucky.

It's like a Monty Python routine:

"Do you like "pictures"? eh? eh? Mind if I take some of your daughters? wink, wink, nudge, nudge. Twenty-five dollars, yes?"

As I said on another thread, I choose to stay in the U.S.A. Vacations, dental work, picture taking—I can do it all right here.

“An elderly grandfather was greeted with hugs and kisses from his family .... he caught the flu in jail and was recovering in Arizona.”

Mebbe he brought something back for everyone.

something here doesn’t add up. if you see someone on the street you can just take their picture. One has to wonder why, and what posing they did. I’d like to see the pics, which would answer a lot of questions, I bet.

I wouldn’t let anyone pose and photograph my kids whatever they wanted to pay me.

The family needs to wake up. Grandpa and the kid could have been home long ago if they had hired a professional to get them out. By that, I mean a guy who knows the right people to bribe to make it all go away.

An absolute sign of a third-world country is that you can get anything with a bribe, and no justice without one.

Reminds me when in the 60s, my Mother-n-law ran a stop sign in Matamoros, Tamps, Mexico (across from Brownsville, we're from the Valley) and broadsided a bus. She hit the brakes quick enough to reduce impact to really minor damage considering.

In one day, she got hold of a lawyer, had court and was released after an amazingly reasonable fine assessed complete with letter from the court releasing her from any damages, etc., I was stunned. The car still ran and tracked okay enough to get home for repairs.

She speaks no Spanish (I do but I wasn't with her!). I think it's about politeness, some money (and not a lot in this case), a lawyer that knew his stuff; it still amazes the family to this day, I can only refer back to your statement because this certainly applies to that theory!

I lived in the Valley for three years and believe your Mother-in-law had an Angel on her shoulder that day!

Aw, that breaks my heart. Hubby and I used to vacation in Puerto Vallarta in the mid-’70s, and we never had any trouble at all. But the last time we went, I felt really intimidated at the airport when we were leaving. The officials looked at us as if we were chickens for plucking. As it happened, and for reasons that had nothing to do with Mexico, we never went back again. Now, we wouldn’t even consider it for a moment.

But those were the days. Memories...

That’s exactly what we’ve thought all these years. She had the letter on official letterhead from the Judge and asked, “Here Hon, could you tell me what this says?”. It was the total release from all furthur obligations from the court.
