CDC: 'Fully expect we will see deaths'
Apr 28 02:29 PM US/Eastern By MIKE STOBBE ATLANTA (AP)
- A U.S. health official said at least five people are hospitalized with swine flu in the United States and deaths are likely. "I fully expect we will see deaths from this infection," as swine flu cases are investigated, said Richard Besser, acting director of the federal Centers for Disease Control.
He said he did not know about a newspaper report of two deaths in two southern California hospitals in which the victims seemed to be suffering from swine flu symptoms. "I would say I'm very concerned," Besser said.
"We are dealing with a new strain of influenza, we're dealing with a strain of influenza that appears to be moving through our community." Based on the latest lab analysis, Besser said new flu infections are still occurring.
He noted, however, that ordinary human flu accounts for about 36,000 deaths every year in the U.S.
He said hospitalizations nationwide include three in California and two in Texas. Besser said the country has 64 confirmed cases in five states, with 45 in New York, one in Ohio, two in Kansas, six in Texas and 10 in California. At least four other cases have been reported by states.

This is just racism against the Swine Flu. The Swine Flu is just doing the job that the regular flu won't do.
Zero’s enemies had better watch out (achoo!) Oops some has the flu.
I’ve got a cough and the sniffles today and I’m sitting here thinking about cancelling my cardiac rehab sessions at the hospital until this all blows over. I don’t think I want to be spending time at the hospital.
Bottled water....my list matches yours...got the last box of masks last night from Walmart...just preparing, no panic...yet.
Chlorine, disinfectant soap, and safety glasses or face shield.
Per FNC, LA coronor investigating 2 deaths.
If you don’t go shopping the flu will win.
why no “spam?”
you forgot the toilet paper and beer, man.
5 Hospitalized with Swine Flu A U.S. health official says deaths are likely with at least five people hospitalized nationwide for swine flu. Acting Director of the federal Centers for Disease Control, Richard Besser says, I fully expect we will see deaths from this infection."many hundreds?"
According to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg two people have been hospitalized in New York - a child in the Bronx and Brooklyn adult. Their cases are separate from the outbreak at a private school in Queens.
City Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden also warns that many hundreds of schoolchildren are sick with suspected cases of swine flu.
For some reason I’m getting a very bad feeling about all of this, I think this flu has a long incubation period and we are in a hell of alot of very serious, very deadly, trouble. Up until now I didn’t feel this way, but somehow, I think there is more to this ...
“Am I missing anything?
Chlorine, disinfectant soap, and safety glasses or face shield. “
Chocolate. LOTS of Chocolate! Won’t help with the flu, but it’s a good way to spend time.
Wind up flashlights and potable water supply?
I’m wearing my MOPP 4 gear right now (1990s vintage).
Any sign yet that this flu bug is any deadlier than other flu strains? I hear a lot of fear mongering, but have not heard much in the way of real stats. Maybe one of you have.
“Am I missing anything?”
Big dog and a Barracuda which runs on nitrous. Also you will need a pair of shoulderpads and hair dye.
Okay...but add Vitamin D3 to your list....
“CDC: ‘Fully expect we will see deaths’”
They sound exited about the prospect.
The usual strains of flu kill over 30,000 Americans every year. I don’t think the docs have any reliable mortality stats on this one yet.
I have rice, lentils, beans, vodka, gin, tonic... limes... yeah, I’m set.
No. I think you pretty well nailed it.
Isn't that what a coroner is supposed to do?
If I was in the hospital with this flu, I would hire a bodyguard.
Ya, I think that is a very poor statement for them to make, how about some optimism from them.
Quick check of death causes in US (1997)
Lyme disease 12,801
Whooping cough 6,564
Typhoid fever 365
Well I’m getting a little more interested in this. Because I have no faith or trust in the government I can’t decide if they’re just manufacturing a crisis for other reasons- or if this is really serious and they’re not telling us a lot they already know...
Fox News reports that the Los Angeles Coroner believes he has two swine flu deaths today.
....."nothing to be alarmed about folks, the Mexi..I mean, the swine flu has not shown............"
According to a Biotech Research Dr we know, the current flu shot does offer some protection from severity of this flu.
This is someone who is currently researching in the field..so we were encouraged by that news.
Also..bet the Zero and the big Rats have already received tamiflu injections..just in case.
First US Fatalities: Two Swine Flu Deaths in California
by Jack Ryan
Apr 28, 2009
The swine flu virus may have killed two Americans in California.
The World Health Organization and other health officials have confirmed that the deadly Swine Flu, which experts fear could spark a pandemic, has spread to other countries.
New cases of the swine flu virus have been confirmed in Israel and even New Zealand, and up until Tuesday, the only deaths resulting from infection remain confined to Mexico.
Well, duh. Here’s the CDC report on deaths (only children deaths are listed, not adults) for flu outbreaks during the past few years. Why should this flu be any different. People die from flu, swine or otherwise.
During the 2003-04 season, 153 flu-associated deaths in children were reported to CDC. (This data was collected by CDC.)
During the 2004-05 season, 47 deaths in children were reported to CDC. (This is the first year that influenza mortality in children became a nationally reportable condition.)
During the 2005-06 season, 46 deaths in children were reported to CDC.
During the 2006-07 season, 76 deaths in children were reported to CDC.
As of June 14, 2008, 83 deaths in children occurring during the 2007-08 season have been reported to CDC
I'm 37, and my loved ones in their 30s....we are not taking that chance.....
....and I DO NOT TRUST THIS GOVERNMENT.
guns n ammo
Michigan now reporting that they have one probable swine flu case.
I think I have all the spam you crossed off of your list ;-)
No way those numbers are correct, Rabies deaths are like 1 or two a year and Malaria deaths, 2000, no freakin way, not even close
The national average is that 36,000 people die from flu-related sicknesses every year.
Somehow 36,000 people dieing EVERY YEAR is not an epidemic but a few people dieing of "Swine Flu," which is still a flu related sickness, is.
Bingo. Most the hype is MSM driven due to the virus arriving in a nontraditional month. Caution is warranted but panic serves no one. On a side note the speculative pharma stocks are very active
“Somehow 36,000 people dieing EVERY YEAR is not an epidemic but a few people dieing of “Swine Flu,” which is still a flu related sickness, is.”
Yea, I’ve been wondering the same thing.
dont’ forget the Oil of Olay. :`)
LOL...you don't know me very well. I could arm a zip code ;)
Are they illegal aliens?
The same old fear mongering of the 70s. They spent 1.5 million on shots, and by the time the flu was gone, people had suffered the usual vacine syndromes and the lawsuits resulted in BILLIONS.
An injection of Tamiflu would require a big needle.
Welcome to Earth, population zero.
Is there anyway to get these folks at the CDC and WHO to STOP calling this ‘Swine Flu’.
We ALREADY HAVE ‘SWINE FLU’. This is a NEW VIRUS that contains 3 different markers for 3 different swine flus, N. American AVIAN flu, AND Human Flu Strain “A”.
I even saw a post here at FR from someone who grew up on a farm dismissing this whole thing because they had “old fashioned swine flu” as a kid, and thought nothing of this...
I’m not suggesting panic, but for Gosh Sakes — they need to STOP calling it SWINE FLU — It’s NOT ‘Swine Flu’!!!!!!!
Suggested names for this virus:
1. Mexican Swine Flu
2. Chimera Flu (3 pigs, a bird, and a human... LOL)
4. ManBirdPig Flu
Granted some of the suggestions above are probably too humorous to use in describing what is a real threat. But, does anyone else feel as I do that calling it swine flu UNDER-represents the threat of this new flu especially in rural areas where REGULAR swine flu (that CAN’T be transmitted from human to human) is a normal part of life?
Hey, me neither.
But at this point the Obama admin scares me more than the flu. Remember 1976 :)
