For just the second time in more than five years of daily or weekly tracking, Republicans now lead Democrats in the latest edition of the Generic Congressional Ballot.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 41% would vote for their districts Republican candidate while 38% would choose the Democrat. Thirty-one percent (31%) of conservative Democrats said they would vote for their districts Republican candidate.
Overall, the GOP gained two points this week, while the Democrats lost a point in support. Still, its important to note that the GOPs improved position comes primarily from falling Democratic support. Democrats are currently at their lowest level of support in the past year while Republicans are at the high water mark.
Over the past year, Democratic support has ranged from a low of 38% to a high of 50%. In that same time period, Republicans have been preferred by 34% to 41% of voters nationwide.
During calendar 2009, Democratic support has ranged from 38% to 42% and the Republican range has been from 35% to 41%.
(Want a free daily e-mail update? If it's in the news, it's in our polls). Rasmussen Reports updates also available on Twitter.
Democrats began the year holding a six- or seven-point lead over the GOP for the first several weeks of 2009. That began to slip in early February and the Republicans actually took a two-point lead for a single week in the middle of March. Since then, the results have ranged from dead even to a four point lead for the Democrats.
Men now favor the GOP by a 45% to 34% margin. Women prefer the Democrats by a 42% to 38% margin.
Other recent polling shows 50% believe the high reelection rates result from election rules that are rigged to benefit members of Congress.
Le Ping
Well, good, hope it holds and widens. Of course, I want “decent” Republicans to win, no more socialist-lite trash.
This can’t be true. The media said the GOP is dead. It’s been proven by the Specter defection.
woopty doo!!!! There is no election today or tomorrow. Now that Specter the schmuck is now a DEMONcrat, this poll means crapola.
The problem is when the generic gets replaced with an actual politician.
Up until now, the media is using 18 to 20% republicans... 38% plus for dims... mid to high 30’s for indies.
LLS
And yet there is virtually no chance that the Republicans win back Congress. Go figure.
That’s funny because Juan Williams on FOX Report just said the GOP is dead. Dems supposedly have a 20 point generic ballot lead in (the bogus) ABC poll.
He said this with a straight face.
The worst thing that could happen to us is that we actually take either the House or the Senate in ‘10.That would allow Hussein to pull a “Clinton ‘96” in ‘12.The best case scenario is that we come close enough to taking one and/or the other to cause Hussein to stall in his tracks.
This is meaningless unless the public really begins to frighten Dems regarding re election. The Blue Dog Dems might feel the effect first. That’s about the only good news I can glean from something like this because the election is so far off that the entire Dem agenda could be in place long before then. If it is it won’t really matter who gets elected in 2010.
That's funny because I've never seen Juan as being even close to being straight.
This will change.
Free elections are over.
The more we purge POS’s like Specter, the better our numbers become.
tea Party effect ... In every Congressional district.
Well a lot of fools keep giving Disney money and they own ABC News. Parents going to Disney World or buying Disney are selling their kids out as Disney supports O. Smart.
I’ve wondered about him myself. He certainly “sounds” that way with the lithp.
this poll will widen, I speak with people that thought obamama was the hottest thing since sliced bread, now the SAME PEOPLE approch me and tell me they can’t believe they voted for the loser in cheif, one at a time OUR Country is waking up to this, empty suit punk excuse of a human
ssshhhhhhh don’t alert the clusterf*ck clown car known as the “media” ...they’ll have to find a republican to “foot tap” in the bathroom before the mid term primaries...they were hoping to wait at least 6 more months before character assassinating any and all repub candidates that they can....
Yep. The Tea Parties were not only attended by GOPers. The ‘rats have overreached and will continue to do so. Now, to turn that Tea Party into our own ACORN (without the fraud) come GOTV time...

If it is any consolation to you, we are so deep in the hole on the Senate side that getting to majority in one cycle is really difficult to impossible.
On the House side it would take a 40 seat shift, which is difficult but possible.
I agree. Short of a complete and total meltdown of the Obama administration there is no way the GOP can take back the Senate. The House is quite possible but, at the moment, still unlikely. If this number continues to widen then I’d say it moves into the somewhat likely territory.
Once Zero’s policies actually begin to take effect, and the economy tanks, these poll numbers will shift dramatically. Right now, the public still supports Zero since they can’t see the results of his actions. Yet.
BAM!
What the site ??
You are right about turning the tea parties into America’s ACORN.
fluke.
This is Hussein’s Amerika. We’re just living in it.
He looks like the villain in the Austin Powers movies.
I recall one called “aftertheteaparties.com” or somesuch. If found, I’ll let you know. That said, a lot of grassrooters were created and contacts made. The organizers in each of the cities probably would be a good start as well. Here’s hoping...
Are we done yet?
Are we going to have to suffer under the full weight of soviet style communism before the general American public gets it?
Conservatives need to reacquaint Americans with the revolution.
ruefully
It was plus 52 in 1994. It’s possible, Zero seems determined to press his radical agenda and now the Republicans won’t be able to restrain him with a Senate filibuster.
Prediction: the more Specters that leave, the higher the GOP “generic” lead gets.
(Some) Women are idiots.
But Juan Williams just said that NOBODY is a Republican any longer with the defection of Arlin Sphincter.
Do those same people hold the Dem congress responsible for the mess that is happening, or are they only looking at the man at the top?
I think GE would be a better target. ABC plays it straight some of the time whereas NBC, MSNBC plays it straight none of the time.
The old "the road to victory is defeat" theory.
as much as it sucks, the Rats getting a filibuster proof majority will probably help the GOP do better in the future.
They can’t blame the GOP for anything from now on.
looking at the man
You obviously learned nothing from the '96 Presidential campaign. Can you say "Newt Gingrich"? I'll wager that Hussein can.

Although not a technical review, my nail techs today said they are hearing from ALOT of women that they voted for Obama and regret it.
And this is a very busy nail salon :)
Dr. Evil.
Juan’s selective and expedient memory apparently can’t recall the same was said about the demrats when Reagan got elected.
And, I wonder who Juan thinks will pick up the pieces when communism fails-—again.
What I’m about to say will no doubt bring feminine wrath down on my head. But here goes.
It is amazing to me that women, who want to feel free to compete with men for top jobs continue to, as a robotic group, vote for the touchy feely “we’ll take care of you” party.
I submit that when women accept that performance, and that means the creation of products people want that are successfully sold for a profit, there will be no glass ceilings. As long as they, as a sex, cling to whining about glass ceilings there will always be glass ceilings.
A good number of women will defend ABORTION to the death and includes the death of the Republic.
I don’t believe these polls. My guess is he is at 42% or less. Possibly under 40% unless people are brain dead.
True. I read something today maybe in the WSJ, whcih I will not be renewing, and someone said the Dems wanted a show investigations into waterboardings and bush when they did not have the votes to please their base.
Now that they have the votes - they will be afraid and will have no excuses. The base will demand it and normal Americans will have a backlash against it.
