OLYMPIA, Wash. -- A Shaw Island man has filed a referendum to repeal a new law that has Washington state join a compact with other states to cast its presidential electoral votes for the national popular vote winner.
David Anderson filed the referendum Wednesday, one day after Gov. Chris Gregoire signed the bill. The new law doesn't take effect until enough states sign on to account for 270 electoral votes - the number it takes to win the White House. Washington has 11 electoral votes. Anderson would have to gather more than 120,500 signatures by July in order to qualify for the ballot.
The compact has been ratified in Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland and New Jersey and is moving ahead in several other states.
So let me get this straight, the dumbasses in Washington have a new law that says all of Washington’s electoral votes go to the clown who wins the most votes NATIONALLY? ROTFL! Funny stuff. “Americans” are such an ignorant lot. Always shooting themselves in the foot. Why should anyone in Washington even bother to vote?
These laws deny the people of their state a voice in the Electoral College by declaring that no matter what electors the voters choose they would send the ones of the national popular vote winner instead.
Let me get this straight. A state votes for candidate A but, because candidate B wins the popular vote, the state is REQUIRED to vote for candidate B? Democracy and representative government is dead in the USA. Last freedom lover out, please slam the door...
a suicide pact
Maybe one day we’ll be “treated” to a 50 state recount. That ought to be fun.
California has been trying to pass this same garbage. I suspect that Arnold will sign it before he leaves office. Tom Campbell, one of our "Republican" gubernatorial candidates for 2010, has been involved trying to push this on a national level. I hope Washington is successful in killing this law.
When the states don’t think that the states should have any voice in the nation where can you turn? When even purely selfish motives cannot serve any longer I just cannot think we have much to look forward to as a country or a people.
Say WA? Evergreen State ping

How the h*ll do they get by with this?
Lets hope David Anderson get the 120,500 signatures he needs by July to be able to stop this.
Is there a place where we can print copies to collect signatures? I’d like to get started right away.
I know of no place.
It’s occurred to me that there might be an argument to be made that that this compact could be unconstitutional.
In order for the NPV compact to be valid and binding under the Compacts Clause of Art 1, Sec. 10 of the Constitution, it has to be approved by Congress. Congress’s approval, however, would essentially be an act undermining the method of electing the President outlined in Art II, Sec. 1. It’s a bit thin, but might be worth fleshing out.
