The coordinator behind a children's coloring book that was pulled from FEMA's Web site last week is standing by her work — despite its controversial cover, which shows a child's drawing of New York's Twin Towers on fire with a plane flying toward them.

"A Scary Thing Happened," a downloadable coloring book designed to help children cope with disaster, was developed by Minnesota's Freeborn County Crisis Response Team following a local tornado in 2003. It was posted on The Smoking Gun Web site after FEMA took it down last week.

Valerie Lucznikowska, who lost her 37-year-old nephew in the 9/11 attacks, said she didn't understand all the fuss.

Disasters happened when I was a kid and I didn’t need FEMA to help me cope.

In contrast, kids come home from school these days in a state of panic over events that aren’t even worthy of panic. It’s because teachers incite panic by “helping them to cope”.

I don’t think my kids would freak out over this, and it would lead to discussion about what happened since they were too young to remember 9/11 (they were 3 years old and 4 months old).

I think it is affecting me more than it would my kids, and I am just wishing we didn’t have to explain such things to children - but that’s life and kids need to know the truth. I’d like to see other’s opinions on this.

During the Bush administration...the MSM was the opposition.

What they should have done was saturation of images of 9/11 daily and the more graphic the better.

We might have been able to go into the middle east and really taken care of the problem. But everything was sanitized and the news media found waterboarding of a couple of individuals to find the perpetrators more of a news story than 9/11 itself.

This country needs a return to patriotism makeover...not a cowering paradigm.

I don't object to the cover. In fact, I think we need to remind a lot of people that radical islam has declared war on us.

The only thing I object to is the implicit characterization of the Twin Towers burning as a "natural" disaster. All the other disasters depicted in the book would seem to be natural. The Twin Towers were not a "man-caused disaster" or whatever the limp-wrists in the obama administration are calling it this week. The Twin Towers and all of 9/11 was a terrorist act, plain and simple.

It’s WAY too soon to publish a coloring book with smoldering twin towers.

Replays of the 9-11 attack have been banned from TV. No need to remind anyone we were attacked. We can all worry about stimulus packages and Swine Flu without having to discuss the 500 pound gorilla sitting on the couch.

Right on... every rock that’s thrown on a school playground is met with psychologists offering to help the children work through their “pain”

It’s my dang responsibility to counsel my children. The government says it’s helping to fill the gaps where parents don’t fulfill their responsibility, but who says those bunch of philandering, compulsive, lying radicals are a preferable choice?

Thy do, I reckon. And that seems to be enough... for them anyway.

” No need to remind anyone we were attacked”

Except, unfortunately - when the administration sends a jet zooming over ground zero causing New Yorkers to say their final prayers.

It was probably useful to some kids 7 or 8 years ago. The cover drawing was made by a child. Even though we tried to shelter them, young kids were exposed to horrible images on tv and the newspapers. I didn’t see the book, but it got good comments from those who used it and saw it.

My middle school daugther wouldn’t watch tv for weeks. She left the room when ever anyone started talking about what happened. My grade schooler son didn’t say much, but now has the Time magazine I saved on his bulletin board. He is enlisting in the Army on July 7, three weeks after his HS graduation. He still remembers the principal making the strange announcement at the end of the day that “your parents may be late today; if they aren’t home when you get dropped off this afternoon, go to a neighbor’s house.”

We all watched our FDNY next door neighbor go to the “pile” for weeks, but even more heart-wrenching was him going out in his dress uniform for funeral after funeral after funeral. The kids were spared nothing.

I don’t think I have any problem with the cover. It’s the thought of any part of this administration taking on the responsibility of explaining anything at all to children. They can’t even get it right about who’s to blame for 911!

Just rubs me the wrong way I guess...

It would not have been “politically correct” to do what you suggest - the attackers were the wrong ethnicity.

I fear that too many are choosing denial over survival in this conflict.

I downloaded and opened the coloring book. I looked at all the pages and comments and I don't see a problem.

Then again, I'm and old fart who grew up in the 50's and 60's, wasn't 'protected' from all 'icky things', and learned by real life bad things happen.

“I downloaded and opened the coloring book. I looked at all the pages and comments and I don’t see a problem.”

Agreed... but sometimes it’s not the “what”, it’s the “who”.

I share your opinion. The left would like to remove all mention of 9/11 from the collective memory.

This sounds like a good idea, something for parents to discuss with their children.

If the govt thinks the book is fine then why deep six “The Path to 9/11”

I know its Disney’s film but its the same premise.

Just looked it over. The cover didn’t bother me, but just flipping thru the pages was downright depressing.

Coloring books are supposed to be _FUN_, not rubbing a kid’s face in pain & suffering.

Thank you for that PDF!

Since yesterday, when I first heard about this neurotic weepfest at FEMA and the White House, I have been waiting to get a copy of the book.

I just love Freepers!
Now it will get 100 times the exposure it would have gotten otherwise.

Islamonauseous and proud!
