Reeling congressional Republicans today launched a new effort days after their latest setback -- the defection of Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, putting Democrats within reach of potentially being able to push legislation through the Senate without a single Republican vote.
House GOP Whip Eric Cantor announced that the National Council for a New America will hold its first event on Saturday with former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who ran last year and could run again in 2012; Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, another possible 2012 contender; former Governor Jeb Bush, the former president's brother; and Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour, a former national GOP chairman.
The council appears a way to rebut Democratic portrayals of the GOP as the "party of no" by pulling together a cohesive policy strategy by the opposition.

“...their latest setback — the defection of Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania.”
Not a setback by any means, but instead, a correction in labeling.
This is a good sign.
The above mentioned are all bright individuals. I imagine they should be able to articulate a new plan better than the GOP’s Congressional leadership.
Thanks, but No Thanks!
“Reeling congressional Republicans today launched a new effort days after their latest setback”
Since when was getting rid of a RINO considered a “setback”???
I couldn’t agree with you more, Retired Greyhound.
Jindal, Palin, Perry are fresh faces.
What setback? FReep Romney and the socialist rhino he rode in on.
I heard MCCAIN is involved.
Didn’t they learn. They just keep spinning their wheels in the same rut.
NO TO AMNESTY
NO TO GOVERNMENT TAKE OVER OF BANKS, AUTO INDUSTRY, INSURANCE, HEALTHCARE.
They still don’t get it, do they?
In my view being the party of no is a good thing. I wish we were the party of no during the previous administration.
I don’t want a new America, I want the old America!
Any where is Sarah Palin in this club?
Eric Cantor can now KMA.
mccain is a RINO..
“Houston we have a problem!”
If you do not believe me look at this.
Inter-American Convention Against Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms (CIFTA)
If the senate ratifies this it will be a clear violation of the U.S. Constitutional protection under the Second Amendment.
What group is that? The RINO Party?
Too many RINOs in this new group! The GOP is really stuck on clueless!
This club is nothing more than a bunch of egotistical Republicans stroking their egos. And any club that includes Romney and McCain is not a club worthy of any conservative support.
RINOs for America
Mighty disappointed in Barbour if he’s teaming up with RINOs. Had high hopes for that boy.
Apparently she was invited, but chose not to get back to them. Ha!
“Any where is Sarah Palin in this club?”
The GOP elite is deliberately ignoring her. They know that the others don’t stand a chance against beating Obama. They know that Sarah is the only one who can do it.
But they’re all stuck in their egos and simply don’t want to admit that there’s someone who can do the job FAR better than they ever could.
It will be great when WE THE PEOPLE ignore the desires of the GOP elite and bring forth our own candidate, the candidate that relates to the average American, the only one who can defeat Obama, the next President of the United States, Governor Sarah Palin of the great state of Alaska!!!!!
Jeb Bush that piece of Trash?????
What set back?
Only a fool could believe that having anyone named BUSH involved offers a chance to regain the confidence of the voting public.
McCain had an opportunity to stand up for America when he suspended his campaign to go to DC during the “financial crisis.” All he had to do was urge his colleagues to vote no on the trillion dollar socialist plunge and lead by example, but no he blew it. He would’ve saved us from this Marxist nightmare. Some hero. McCain is a horse’s ass.
And is it that you are so prejudice that Mitt did not have some good ideas. You are the kind that will shoot your foot just to promote your hate. Why don't the haters just back off and see what happens, or is that too much. Offering just hate never will help the GOP.
“This is a conversation with America.”
America is tired of “conversation” at this point guys. We want action.
The lineup of the apparent leadership includes McCain which IMO skews the credibility of the new organization.
There seems to be some RINO’s involved in those signing at the bottom of the letter as well.
I don’t think Conservatives have achieved getting their message across to the Republicans yet. Will have to try harder.
Our National Panel of Experts:
Governor Haley Barbour
Governor Jeb Bush
Governor Bobby Jindal
Senator John McCain
Governor Mitt Romney
garbage. if you want to rebrand the GOP, do so with conservatism. having Senator McCain in this committee shows me they still aren’t getting the message
And seems like the Lady is taking a pass. Interesting.
Mitt’s a well spoken, intelligent and accomplished leader.
Not my first choice by a long shot, but not someone to kick to the gutter either.
If you compare your life accomplishments to Jeb Bush’s, I suspect you come up short.
Remember quotes about glass houses and casting the first stone.
Don't know much about Cantor, so that only leaves Barbour that knows **it.
Take it up with the boss at #8.
>>>McCain also addressed reports that Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, his vice presidential pick last year, was not invited, saying that she could be involved.
“We’ve reached out to her,” he said. <<<
Translation: Governor Palin was too smart to wallow in the mud with this pack of RINOs.
I suspect conservatives are a bunch of losers or else they would run for office, win primaries and win general elections.
All I hear is whining about the republican elites. Whining is for losers.
Earth to the Boston Globe - perhaps you have failed to notice this, but the Dems have been doing this anyway. Specter just admitted who he really is.
Hopefully, Snowe and Collins will soon join him.
I really think it quite remarkable that Romney, as Gov of Massachusetts,
managed to raise taxes even on out-of-state New Hampshire residents, too.
How Romney is that?
Palin/Perry in 2012
LOL, a picture is worth how many words!!!!
Remember quotes about glass houses and casting the first stone.
No; I have done Quite a bit on my Own without my Daddy's help..and I would never be an open border Butt-wipe and end the last half my speeches in Spanish..Should we continue about the Bastard locking offshore drilling out of the picture?? Care to continue??
Oh for crying out loud, Jindal is on this.
Is Jesus a RINO, too?
Stop calling everybody a RINO!
Idiots. We want an opposition party to fight these socialist bastards, not cave-in to them. Romney, McCain et al are yellow backed spineless wimps.
If you don't LOUDLY say NO to socialism, you're not worth spit! What the hell good is the GOP if they have no fight!!
