One of the Palestinians who hijacked the Achille Lauro cruise ship and killed an American Jewish passenger in 1985 has been released after more than 23 years in jail, officials said Thursday.

Youssef Magied al-Molqui left prison in Palermo, Sicily, on Wednesday and was transferred to a holding center for immigrants in nearby Trapani while officials work to expel him, police in the Sicilian capital said.

Good work Italy! Now Youssef can return to the simple life of a Pali “activist” and “militant.”

At the time of the hijacking, the Italian gov’t had a non-aggression deal with the PLO. If I recall correctly, they let one of the hijackers travel through Italy and slip away to Yugoslavia, infuriating the Reagan Administration.

The only thing surprising is that he spent this much time
in jail.

This guy won’t live six months. As soon as he goes free, Israel will get intel on him. Those that bring him back into the loop will be identified and put on watch lists. Finally, he will get a dose of Swine Flu and die.

"He was convicted of shooting elderly New Yorker Leon Klinghoffer and ordering him to be dumped overboard.

In 1996, Molqui disappeared during a furlough, but he was recaptured in Spain after three weeks on the run."

... was transferred to a holding center for immigrants in nearby Trapani while officials work to expel him, police in the Sicilian capital said.

Simple solution: Take him down to Pachino (SE Corner Sicily) give him a waterproof compass and say that the Gaza strip is 100 degrees (more or less). Follow with a Coast Guard ship shooting at 'sharks' until he clears the International line. Simple, no?

“Achille Lauro hijacker released”

SNIPPET: “Four Palestinian militants were jailed over the hijack”

SNIPPET: “The leader of a Palestinian group which hijacked cruise liner Achille Lauro in 1985 and killed an American Jewish passenger has been released from jail.
Youssef Magied al-Molqui, one of four hijackers who were tried and sentenced to long jail terms in Italy, was freed early on grounds of good behaviour.

A judge has ordered Mr Molqui, who has an Italian wife, to be expelled.
He served nearly 24 years of a 30-year sentence for hijacking the Italian cruise liner.

In 1996, Mr Molqui failed to return to prison after a spell of leave.
He was later arrested in Spain. At the time, the United States put up a $2m reward for his re-capture.”

“1985: Gunmen hijack Italian cruise liner”

SNIPPET - QUOTE:

I was there

When the Achille Lauro was hijacked in October 1985 I was working as a receptionist at a Cairo Hotel.

At around 0200 hours on my late night shift I received a phone call from one of the Egyptian travel agents asking if I have 300 rooms available!

I was surprised and answered with hesitance that we do have availability. In three hours around 350 guests arrived in shocked condition.

They were passengers of the Achille Lauro that went on a trip to Cairo and were supposed to rejoin the ship at PortSaid.

I remember that I had to deal with this situation for three days nonstop. They were the longest three days I worked during my entire career.
Mohamed Samy, Egypt

In Context
The hijackers were from the Palestinian Liberation Front, a splinter group of Yasser Arafat’s Palestinian Liberation Organisation.
They shot dead a disabled American tourist, 69 year-old Leon Klinghoffer and had his body thrown overboard with his wheelchair.

The crisis ended on 10 October. Egypt gave free passage to the hijackers in exchange for the rest of the hostages.

But US Navy jets intercepted a chartered Egypt Air 737 carrying the gunmen and forced it to land in Italy.

Four of them were tried in Italy and sentenced to long prison terms. Abu Abbas, the alleged mastermind escaped jail and stands convicted in absentia.

He was arrested by US special forces in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, in April 2003 and died in custody in March 2004. A post mortem examination showed he died of heart disease.

The Achille Lauro caught fire and sank in 1994.

In fairness, that's not the right word, to Italy, this is a European thing. He wouldn't server more time had he been convicted in Israel, another European justice system. However he did kill an American, we do have jurisdiction, and could ask for his extradition. Won't happen, and I know, there are moral though I don't think legal double jeopardy issues.
