Gay People Don't Need Marriage
guardian.co.uk ^ | 04/30/2009 | Mark Simpson

It's secularism that has given gay people rights. And in civil partnerships, we have a secular institution fit for their celebration.

The question: Is gay marriage a religious issue?

Who would have guessed the dainty opinions of a Miss America candidate would have been taken so seriously by gays and liberals?

Miss California, a practising Christian, was last week denounced by Miss America gay judge Perez Hilton on his blog as "a dumb bitch" and unworthy of the Miss America crown because she gave the "wrong" answer to his chippy question about gay marriage. Like most Americans – including the current Democratic president of the United States – she believes that marriage is "between a man and a woman". Boo! Hiss! Rip her to shreds!

-snip-

Candidate Obama expressed the exact same view during the Presidential Election: "I believe that marriage is the union between a man and a woman. Now, for me as a Christian, it's also a sacred union. You know, God's in the mix."

Of course, instead of being scorned as a bigot and a dumb bitch, Obama was handed the Mr America crown by liberals and probably most gay voters. But I suppose that being president of the United States is a rather less important title than Miss America.

Branding Christians and traditionalists "bigots" for being Christians and traditionalists and thus none too keen to fundamentally revise the definition of marriage is a highly unattractive exercise in liberal self-righteousness that makes Miss America look quite sophisticated. Not to mention something that puts you in mind of pots and kettles. It's faintly absurd to have to even say this, but it isn't bigoted to believe that marriage is between a man and a woman. It's just being conventional.

It’s a shame that we must get our “news” from the UK where they still try to practice journalism.

I thought the same thing. I find out more going on in this country from the UK than our own news sources.

I totally agree with the article (with the exception of the authors condescending attitude toward Christianity and Marriage).

Marriage is a Religious and Sacred Institution with a legal element. Marriage is a sacred covenant between a Man and A Women and is the pillar of healthy families which are the bedrock of Civilizations. Sorry, 5,000 years of evidence can’t be wrong.

Now civil unions I am cool with. They are nothing but a legal, secular construct between two adults. They don’t undermine Marriage because they aren’t marriages. They are nothing more then an agreement between two partners that the state recognizes. Marriage is about making a holy commitment before God to love, honor, and cherish your spouse and it’s about starting and building a family. Civil Unions are about tax benefits and hospital visitation.

What exactly is a “practicing Christian”?

Strangely, I kind of agreed with his premise. Civil unions are partnerships that are blessed by the state - most liberals consider the state their God, so why not.

Marriage, on the other hand is blessed and ordained by God. I personally prefer the latter, but to each his own.

I’m wondering if the Republican party can use this to satisfy both moderates and conservatives. I don’t know.

“Gay People Don’t Need Marriage”

That’s what they (the gay community) have been saying, loudly, for years. One can only guess what their motives are in suddenly deciding to the contrary, unless it is to degrade and destroy the institution.

IMO, the reason homosexuals are pushing for “marriage” is to make us accept that their choices are normal and natural they are just like everybody else. I will never accept homosexual “marriage” and if the Republican party does, I will just vote independent. In reality, with the divorce rates and out of wedlock births, marriage is a dying institution anyway.

Gays are free to marry - it’s absurd when an advocate for same-sex marriage insists that gays are unable to marry. Every gay man has the same legal right to marry as every straight man. Every gay woman has the same legal right to marry as every straight woman.

This idea that the laws fail on some equal protection grounds is patently wrong. Marriage laws do not discriminate based on sexual orientation.

LOL, very cheeky, love it. I go to the UK news sources almost everyday. Great find, thanks. Love this part:

Candidate Obama expressed the exact same view during the Presidential Election: "I believe that marriage is the union between a man and a woman. Now, for me as a Christian, it's also a sacred union. You know, God's in the mix."

I wonder if Perez got the bulletin? The president said exactly what Miss Prejean said. And yet the gay community, so upset with conservatives and Mormons and Catholics for opposing gay marriage, is strangely, weirdly silent regarding Obama's position on gay marriage.

Perez Hilton seems silent and clueless that his own president has the same opinion.
