There was also a plan to use atomic bombs to blow breeches in Jap defensive lines during the invasion and pour allied troops through the holes. God only knows how many thousands would have died or become casualties of radiation poisoning.
We had TWO nukes and dumbass there thinks wasting one would have been a wise decision.

Of course if Jon Stewart had been alive back then and had spent the better part of four years rooting the Japs out of every rat hole in the Pacific, he probably would have thougth a nuke or two would have been a grand idea.
I wouldn’t doubt a third bomb at all. I haven’t come across it in autobiographies of Presidents and probably never will.
I find is amazing that we had so much fissionable material in 1945. How did we get so far ahead of the Germans?

Considering how long it is taking Iran to gather fissionable material, we must have had huge facilities with maybe a million centrifuges all in the belief that nuclear weapons would work as theorized.

From my limited knowledge of the subject, most of the scientists were glad to work for us while we had a spy that was giving this knowledge to the Soviets.
We didn’t mistreat them and the Soviets would have been given some information as to agreements to leave each other alone. Ideology of Governments at the time were wide yet agreeable that Hitler had to go.
Ah, that looks to be even more expensive and space consuming than centrifuges. I doubt America will ever be so forward thinking and self sufficient again.

I recall Jon Stewart getting wobbly kneed over the first 1,000 casualties suffered in Iraq. I think this buffoon fails to realize that we lost about 14,000 men in taking Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal alone. About 12,000 in Iwo Jima.
The man clearly has no historical perspective. These weaklings are so afraid of “war crimes” that they’d intentionally kill US servicemen to ease their little consciences. Sorry, John. Leaders in war ultimately act for the good of their nations—not to sleep better at night, Stew.
That's 100% true. The Hiroshima bomb was a uranium bomb, while the Nagasaki bomb was a plutonium bomb. The scientists and engineers were pretty sure that both would work, but they couldn't test both types of bombs. They just didn't have enough of the fissible material. So they had to hope they would both work.
Calling Jon Stewart an idiot is an insult to idiots the world over.
