Conservative WTKK radio host Jay Severin was suspended indefinitely today after making offensive remarks about illegal aliens and the swine flu, sources tell the Herald.
Severin was shocked to learn about the suspension, the sources said, as the station had been using those same remarks in on-air promos.
Heidi Raphael, a spokeswoman for station owner Greater Media, confirmed Severin’s suspension saying the station would have no further comment.

Spanish-language daily newspaper El Diario la Prensa in New York City, reported earlier this week that Severin was using the flu to attack Mexicans and immigrants.
“For Severin, Mexicans are ‘criminaliens’ and primitives who export venereal diseases to the United States,” the paper reported. “The shock jock referred to the strain of flu as ‘swine-aka-Janet Napolitano flu.’ ”
“That’s not the end of Severin’s anti-immigrant rants. Immigrants are leeches and their children, he warns, don’t speak English, will retard schools, add to crime and spread disease. Amid all of this, Severin has the audacity to state, ‘I don’t mean to hype the story,’ ” the paper said.

Imagine dealing with a potential emergency involving people that don’t have a clue what you are saying. You get on the phone to someone who can interpret and the phone gets passed back and forth while time is a wasting. After things get worked out, the very people you are trying to help say through an interpreter that you should learn how to speak Spanish. Been there and done that, and I can say it really sucks.
I don’t live by the border. I live in the heartland of the USA. Maybe I missed the mandatory Spanish speaking requirement. What the heck have we become? It’s only a matter of time before someone gets sued because they responded to a situation and couldn’t communicate in Spanish or whatever language.

The priorities of political correctness trump the truth, public health and national security, and the more harm it does, the louder and more shrill its supporters become. We live at a time when many believe that the sheer force of a political dogma can reshape and manipulate reality, even to the point of defying the laws of physics and nature. The Left is enthusiasticly propelling mankind toward a the Dark Ages II by turning wishful thinking on steroids into a national religion.
OK,so break down this statement.A good percentage,most likely the large majority,of Mexicans living in this country have committed at least one crime and many have committed a second (identity theft).And many of these illegal aliens carry various diseases to our shores...VD,TB,swine flu,insects in the brain (there was such a case publicized recently).And as for "primitives"...compared to us most of them are.
So it sounds like he's right on target.

If he did use Illegal aliens that would make his statements even more true. Legal immigrants have more than likely been screened, illegals aliens haven't and are fleeing a nation ravaged with the flu as well as many other diseases we had wiped out but are returning.
This is NOT a free speech issue. The government did not restrict his speech in any way.
This is an employment performance issue. Jay’s employer didn’t like the way he was doing his job. Jay’s employer is not required by any law to let him say anything he wants on their radio signal.
Unless Jay has a contract requiring the station to allow him to say whatever he wants on the air, this is a simple matter of the employer deciding to change the content of the show during those hours.
Agreed. I've worked in customer service types of jobs for years, and a few months ago, I had to take one in a place that deals with the general public in a utility company. Before, I dealt with bankers, attorneys, realtors, medical supply offices, doctors, etc. all who were happy to speak English with me, and had to get jobs where that was necessary.
Now, anybody and everybody calls in where I work, and while I'm more than happy to get an interpreter on line, I started encountering those Spanish-speakers who feel that having an interpreter is not good enough for them (I'm sure my company spends a fortune to provide this for the lazy bastards) and who want to talk to a Spanish-speaking person. I have a Cuban friend who sits in the cube across from me, and he's generally willing to take them, but even he shakes his head about people who won't learn English in America.
I have to say, the experience has made me much more in favor of English-only in our society.

One of my daughter-in-laws is Japanese. She came to this country when she was 20, to get an second college degree. She didn’t know anyone, didn’t speak English and had never been here. Yet in 3 years she learned to speak English, read and write it, worked while going to school, and got her degree. She was never on public assistance. She came legally too, and is here again (married to my son) legally.

If you read the Globe article, it’s obvious that Severin’s commments went way beyond the boundaries of commenting on immigration policy - it was hate speech, simple as that:

“When we are the magnet for primitives around the world - and it’s not the primitives’ fault by the way, I’m not blaming them for being primitives - I’m merely observing they’re primitive,” he said.
His branding of the citizenry of an entire neighboring nation as “primitive” justifies his suspension.
I have learned that it doesn't take long for liberal women to become conservative soccer moms in Texas. It takes several months, but they adapt quickly when they learn it's quite permissable for men to open doors for them, along with paying for taking them out on dates.
Before too long, they fall in love with a good, hard working Texas man. The metamorphosis is complete when they start extolling the virtues of the "cover two" defense.

In the context of this type of show, where opinions are expressed and expression of agreement or dissent is encouraged, this is a perfectly acceptable statement of his opinion. He uses no racial slurs. He brands all illegal aliens as criminal aliens - which they are. And these same expressions have been de facto accepted by the radio station over the years.
This is not a 1st amendment issue per se since as an employee or more likely a contractor to the radio station they can to some extent curb what he says. Probably depends on the wording of his contract.
And what should we call people who come here with no education, no ability or desire to speak English - the world's default language of business, and no skills other than physical ability to do manual labor?
We're not getting the cream of Mexican citizenry here. And unlike China or India who both worried about a brain drain to the US, the Mexican government doesn't really care if these people leave. Near as I can tell the encourage it.

You’re right. Employer bowed to PC pressure. They’ll probably replace him with someone less controversial which will probably make their ratings decline. But at least they did the “right” thing in the eyes of the political elite. Liberals imposing their version of the fairness doctrine.

Today’s Herald says Jay Severin and his agent will meet with WTKK on Monday to discuss his
future with the station.
Is he coming back or not, and if so, would Greater Media try to re-negotiate his contract?
If not, I could poss. see them putting McPhee in Graham’s slot, Graham in pm drive,
and a syndie host (Hannity?) or lower-paid local host at 7 pm...But we’ll see.
I sense an audible delight in their voices when I pronounce their names correctly, we had a lot of Pacific Rim people out in the Northwest, and if you listened, you could learn a lot of things from them.
Still no resolution to Jay situation; VB filling in today.
