One of my daughter-in-laws is Japanese. She came to this country when she was 20, to get an second college degree. She didn’t know anyone, didn’t speak English and had never been here. Yet in 3 years she learned to speak English, read and write it, worked while going to school, and got her degree. She was never on public assistance. She came legally too, and is here again (married to my son) legally.

Sounds like your daughter fits right in with the rest of us racists in Texas.

I have learned that it doesn't take long for liberal women to become conservative soccer moms in Texas. It takes several months, but they adapt quickly when they learn it's quite permissable for men to open doors for them, along with paying for taking them out on dates.

Before too long, they fall in love with a good, hard working Texas man. The metamorphosis is complete when they start extolling the virtues of the "cover two" defense.

I also deal with a lot of customers of Asian ancestry, as well. Sometimes they will have a child or grandchild translate for them, as a courtesy to me. Even if there are no translators (only once did I have someone ask for Mandarin Chinese, and this was clearly an older person) they are invariably polite and patient with me, realizing that they have to spell out addresses and names.

I sense an audible delight in their voices when I pronounce their names correctly, we had a lot of Pacific Rim people out in the Northwest, and if you listened, you could learn a lot of things from them.
