It would probably shock leftists to know Truman said that after making the decision to drop the A bomb, he didn’t give it a second thought and had a good nights sleep. They like their presidents to be hand wringers and wimpy. Truman was anything but.

Absolutely true. Further, Truman had seen the horror of modern war - he had been to Europe in WWI as an infantry captain in an arty group. Artillery made WWI a most efficient and dehumanized killing ground - a soup of mud, water, blood and flesh.

Truman knew well what lay in store if we were going ashore on the main island.

Give a man who had seen what Harry had seen a choice between “Incredible new weapon dropped from high above the battlefield” and “street to street fighting for a year or more” and it isn’t a surprise which he chooses.

Harry’s best attribute was that he made a decision, stuck by it and didn’t try to pawn the responsibility for it off on someone else.
