Edwin Edwards it was! They finally convicted him after many, many tries. I think you are correct that many of the old city bosses were more about power than personal enrichment, but they sure made a lot of their cronies rich in the process.
What about Louisiana Congressman William Jefferson with thousands in his freezer? Bill Clinton is probably the most corrupt in the 20th Century, but hasn’t yet gotten caught.

The criterion they used was politicians who corruptly made money through their political office. Ideological considerations would have added Nixon to the list.

Folks went to jail for the original Teapot Dome Scandal. Yet our pal Al managed to sell that same oil field to his friends at Occidental Petroleum with nary a peep from the press.
If we still had that field, I wonder how much less we would have had to spend to pump oil out of other wells and back into the current Strategic Reserve.

Anyone else notice that half of the politicians have no party registration listed and that all of these are Democrats?
Well, of the 10 MOST corrupt politicians of ALL time, four are Republicans, two are Democrats and four
. . . and it took 39 posts for someone to point out the obvious.Going by author-notated party affiliation, twice as many Republican crooks as Democratic ones. In reality, 6 out of 10 were Democrats. And I would venture that even that percentage is a biased sample, and that in a more exhaustive list you would find no less than 80%, probably 90% or more, of big time political crooks found their opportunity in the Demagogic Party.
As I was reading the piece, I thought that the author was going to entirely avoid mention of the party affiliation of any of the corrupt Democrats. It sort of looks like the author spotted that tendency and put the "Democrat" on a couple of them just to avoid "outting" himself - or herself, whoever "we" is.
