Conservation Efforts Benefit from 31 Percent Jump in Excise Taxes

Firearms and ammunition excise tax collections for fourth quarter of calendar year 2008.

SALES REMAIN STRONG FOR MANUFACTURERS . . . Firearm and ammunition manufacturers paid more than $98 million in excise taxes in the fourth quarter of 2008, up 31.2 percent over the same period in 2007, according to figures released earlier today by the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

From Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, $27.6 million was collected for pistols and revolvers, $35 million for long guns and $35.5 million for ammunition. Compared to the same period in 2007, collections were up 70.1 percent for handguns, 11.4 percent for long guns and 31.1 percent for ammunition.

Excise tax collections are a key economic indicator for the industry. The taxes are calculated as a percentage of wholesale receipts, paid quarterly by firearm and ammunition manufacturers, and earmarked for state wildlife conservation and habitat restoration programs. A total of $345.2 million was collected in excise taxes in 2008, up 13.9 percent from the $303.2 million collected the previous year. These statistics are based solely on U.S. civilian sales and do not include sales to military, police, etc.

Incidentally, this tax data is a better indicator that NICS background checks, which are inflated by used gun sales, and deflated by multiple purchase transactions. The tax rate is simply a straight percentage (~10%) of wholesale revenues.

Look at how well he’s stimulating the economy!

With every $15 box of ammo I buy, I realize I’m helping Obama to help the economy recover!

Took some earnest searching to find Hornady’s Leverevolution ammo. You could only buy it by the box though.

Handgun sales up 70%, but most of the populace is very happy with Obama. They don’t have any fears these days. /s

The truth seeps out sooner or later.

“Conservation Efforts Benefit from 31 Percent Jump in Excise Taxes”

...unfortunately, since Clinton a lot of that money has gone to anti-hunting groups....and BTW the only reason gun sales were up 70% instead of 700% is that manufacturers couldn’t ship....my gun store owner told me that “the industry simply wasn’t prepared for Obama”

Handguns are fine and wonderful. Long guns are going to prove more useful when the SHTF.

A bit of both works for me.

I have been doing my part too, I figure I have paid several hundred dollars in excose tax into the Obipma tax coffers.

And Obama STILL wants to define how wealthy I should be.

Where IS his gratitude???

He borrowed billions of future tax dollars, and now he wants to TAKE our money to pay for it. Good luck on that Obipma.

Bought a case of 5.56x45 today. For about 20% more than I would have paid 6 months ago.

And about 125% more than I would have paid 3 years ago.

A GLock LEO rep told us they are 20,000 orders behind and S&W and Ruger are about 15,000 each behind. They are supposedly adding a third shift to meet demand. Strike while the iron is hot.

I read that some Kimbers have a 6 to 9 month wait.

The following is a public service announcement.

Here's my tip of the month: there is still a great pistol and ammo deal out there waiting for you. If you have waited too long to arm up, or if you want one more, look at the excellent milsurp CZ-52 pistol and 7.62X25 Tokarev ammo.

You can get a CZ-52 for about $200 at any gun show or at many gun stores. You can also find them by googling around the internet. The ammo can be had for as low as 11 cents a bullet in any quantity you want. Extra mags are from $12 to $20 each.

The milsurp ammo is full metal jacket, firing an 85gr bullet at 1,600fps. These will go through car doors, kevlar helmets, kevlar vests etc like an icepick through butter. OTOH, they will also go through one bad guy and maybe hit a good guy behind him.

However, you can buy hollowpoints ("Wolf Gold" with brass shells) for about $19/50, or half the price of comparable 9mm JHPs. My test "Wolf Gold" JHP ammo expanded to .60 caliber, the same as my test 9mm JHPs.

So for $400, you could buy a CZ-52, 1,500 rounds of assorted ammo, and a few extra mags. OR, you could buy about 2/3s of a "brand name" pistol, and no ammo.

It's just a thought. This is a great bargain. The ammo is cheap and plentiful at all of the internet catalog sites. Don't wait, the libtards will soon slam the door on foreign gun and ammo imports, and the prices will go way up.

Another benefit of this pistol is that it is very accurate, with very fine sights. WIth this flat-shooting ammo, you can hit at 100 yards with ease. Downsides are brittle firing pins (buy a spare, and don't dry fire) and a decocking function that you should not trust. Just lower the SA hammer like a 1911. The safety works like a 1911, so if you are used to 1911s, it will be very easy to use the CZ-52

If AP had reported this, they would have attributed the rise in sales to "fears of increased crime in a difficult economy".

Yeah, let's just ignore the elephant in the room.

Here in Utah, a box of 50 9mm bullets goes for $15. That’s when I can find any.

Went to the York PA gun show this weekend and saw one CZ 52. Looked like it had been dragged behind a pick up. The slide needed to be racked by a come along. I think the supply is drying up. Don’t see them much on the internet. I added a CZ 82 to the menagerie today.

Yeah, I think the CZ-52s must be drying up. Still a lot of cheap ammo for them though. I had a Tokarev for a while, I didn’t like it much, but it does take the same ammo.

Yeah, I think the CZ-52s must be drying up...

SARCO found some in 9 mm that they're retailing for $245. Somehow they're less appealing than the 7.62's, though.
