Rep. Jim Evans spews racial tirade in ‘analysis’ of the Jackson mayoral election (Mississippi)

Mississippi State Representative Jim Evans (D) unleashed a racial tirade this week on his political "analysis" of the upcoming Jackson mayoral election in this week's Jackson Advocate (on newsstands now!). Rep. Evans is Chair of the Constitution Committee under House Speaker Billy McCoy (D). Evans is also husband to Sara O'Reilly-Evans, who is currently the City Attorney in Jackson under Mayor Frank Melton.

Evans talks of "cuffes" and "coons" when referring to black politicians that cowtow to "the man" (he is black, by the way). He talks of many of our city leaders as white supremacists and robber barons.

For some off the street wingnut writing in the Jackson Advocate, it'd be one thing. However, Evans is a Representative (though of what we're not quite sure) in the State Legislature.

Read it for yourself.

I am drawing attention to this article, not because I agree with anything in it (I don't), but to point out that an elected official in our Mississippi House actually thinks, acts and talks in this way. It's important for people with an IQ over 90 to see what is happening in Jackson. There is such a palpable disconnect between the "haves" and the "have nots" and never the two shall meet it seems. That is why so many Jacksonians can't understand why some of the people we elect or appoint in city government actually get elected and appointed. I think both Horhn and Crisler would laugh about Evans and that's why I don't mind putting it out there. Having people read this won't hurt them in the least. In fact, it might help both of them.

Meanwhile, Speaker McCoy might want to look down his leadership roster and make sure that the views of those he's chosen reflects his own.

The National Black Caucus of State Legislators (NBCSL) held its 30th Annual Legislative Conference at the Marriott Hotel in Jackson, MS, November 29, through December 3, 2006. The theme for this year’s conference was “Seeing Beyond Vision. Leadership. Action” The labor luncheon, held Friday, Dec. 1, 2006, was one of the conference highlights.

The NBCSL Labor Round Table unanimously selected Brenda Scott, President of MASE/CWA, Local 3570, in Jackson to receive their Local Labor Leader’s Award. They determined that she exemplifies outstanding support for labor on behalf of all working men and women.

Rep. James Evans, District 70, received the Community Leadership Award at the same luncheon. ‘Jim’, as he prefers to be called, is a former professional football player with the New York Giants and a double dues paying member of CWA (The Guilds and MASE/CWA). Rep. Evans has authored numerous labor-friendly bills in the Mississippi legislature and prizes his anti-privatization bill as trophy legislation. Jim has served in the state legislature since 1992 and is a national AFL-CIO field representative.

Once again a Black politician from the Deep South, probably rasied in a sanctified, Bible-preachin', snake-handlin' church, is in all probability a full-throttle supporter of "gay rights," abortion, and everything else. When does bestiality get a "liberation" movement?

I guess the only reason it's still illegal for cousins to marry is because the "rednecks" allegedly like to do it.

“...he is black, by the way...”

Unnecessary addendum.

Only bulletproof, black politicans can get away with “racial tirades”, along with various and sundry other misbehaviors.

That is, unless it is another self-hating, white liberal slamming his or her’s own race; that too, would be solid ground.

Well at least Jackson will a have different Mayor.
Melton was a huge disappointment to a lot of
people including me.
Right now Melton is still in ICU with his heart problems.

Huh? I thought all of the recent crop of Jackson 'city leaders' were black.

Do you happen to know the origin of the word “cuffe”? I never heard that one before!

“Only bulletproof, black politicans can get away with “racial tirades”

Well, it provides a method for them to vent their anger at their continued oppression at the hands of the white man/s;)

Me too. I heard him speak several years ago and was very impressed. He seemed to have a lot of common sense views on issues. Power corrupts.....

Rading a little about Paul Cuffee on wiki; I think this is a person whose life story should become *very* visible. Read the article before some fascist rewrites history.

>> [Melton] seemed to have a lot of common sense views on issues. Power corrupts <<

I’m afraid I’ll have to disagree. I’ve never come across any knowledgeable Jackson people who say Melton is “corrupt” — at least not as that word is conventionally defined, i.e., using his office illegally to enrich himself or his family, giving or taking bribes, etc.

So what explains his behavior? It’s very simple:

Old Frank is just plain crazy.

The corruption of power is not limited to finances. Power can also corrupt the character of the individual. That appears to be what happened to Melton.

I’m here to tell you, when I heard him speak so many years ago he made perfect sense. He was addressing a group of ‘at risk’ teens. He laid it on the line, no whining about race, etc. I thought he was great.

Evans is a Representative (though of what we're not quite sure) in the State Legislature.

I suspect it is highly likely that he is an excellent representative of the folks in his district. Just like, for example, Nancy Pelosi and Marion Barry. It's democracy in action.

Please put (Dem) in the headline. “Rep.” is used alone in MSM headlines to confuse the headline-only-reading public between “Representative” and “Republican”.

The post is from a blog. The headline is as written, besides, no party noted automatically means Democrat.

Jackson was such a nice place when I was young.

Now...not so much.

It’s a dang shame what’s happened to the city.

I love Y’all Politics!
