Supporters of a celebrated school voucher program in Washington rallied near the mayor's office Wednesday to save the scholarships from being slashed by Congress -- nearly 40 percent of whose members send their own children to private schools.
An estimated 1,000 parents, children and community leaders attended the afternoon protest in Washington's Freedom Plaza, where they called on D.C. politicians to help preserve a federal school choice program that currently assists more than 1,700 students with scholarships worth up to $7,500.
"Several years ago many of us in this good city worked very hard to get a program going with the federal government so that children could go to the schools of their choice. This program has worked," said Kevin Chavous, a former D.C. councilman, but "right now some folks in Congress want to end this program."

It’s all of them, when it comes to the double standard. This country has come so very far from the days and the principles of citizen service in government, because a representative is required in a democratic republic, and then they would be more than happy to return to private life, to these days when politics is a lucrative career and not a vocation of a citizen’s duty to serve the cause of the public good (good government). We say this many contexts and for many reasons, but above all I believe our Founding Fathers would be aghast at what this country and its “government” has become, and what being in that government has become-a conduit of ambition and power, rather than a service not to be taken lightly to your fellow citizens.

If washington really cared about kids, they would immediately give every child a 7,500$ voucher, and let everyone pick their own educational choice, no limitations. It would cut the cost of education in half, and improve overnight.
If school choice is what liberals really want, why the heck do they support unions and monopolies? If they really cared about children (and not just 1700 of them in DC), they would do whats best for the kids. I guess that isn’t their real intention. I hope that liberal voters see this now, and understand that MONEY does NOT fix a problem, otherwise, the DC Students that cost 14,000 per pupil per year would be getting TWICE the education the 7500$ voucher students are. Since this is not the case, I guess SENDING THE KIDS TO THE BEST SCHOOL FOR THEM IS THE BETTER OPTION, eh? I would imagine that most public servants would use those public schools they send 14,000 per student to because money makes it all better, that why they want even MORE money for them.
What? They send their kids to private school? Why? Ummm, please liberals, pull your heads out of your butts and LOOK AT what is going on. MONEY DOESN”T FIX IT, free markets, school CHOICE will! Better yet, abolish the DOE and return schooling to the STATES where it belongs!!

Very Simple. Because the Civil Rights Movement, a great moral cause supported by Republicans, was hijacked by the Democrats and turned into a political movement. Thus the Blacks continually get shafted by the Democrats by more powerful political groups but are kept in line by the promise of power for the few elitists.
In this case, the powerful teacher unions have more influence than African Americans. So the Democrats say to the Blacks, sorry your kids lose. Hey, but we will pass affirmative action programs that, if your kids aren't first in jail after they drop out of a worthless public school, we will get your kids into college whether or not they deserve it. Then, assuming they don't wash out, we have worthless studies they can major in like Black Studies. Then when they graduate and are unemployable, they can have jobs with activist groups funded by the federal government like ACORN.
Then the few Blacks that make it out of this trap go onto cable channels and advocate democratic policies and claim Republicans are racist and don't understand the Black community.

This protest is a joke - the same people out there protesting will, the next day, put on their “I love Obama” tshirts and follow everything he and the rats say - lock, stock and barrel.

Fact is, every one of these folks desperately wants the program to continue, and either their party adapts or they get lost. I put one of the voucher kids into my alma mater, a high-end, northeast liberal arts college. Once there the commie/feminists tried to latch onto her; She rewarded them by signing up for the Young Republicans.
This is a black kid from SE DC. One person at a time, changed. Btw, her mother was there today.
The Democratic Party and Civil Rights are incompatible with each other.
The reason why is because liberalism in general is very collectivist and would trample on the rights of the individual for the rights of the group. In the Democrat’s mind, they need to improve black neighborhood schools and sending the best of what the black community has to offer to private school would fly in the face of their collectivist dreams.
Everything the Democratic party does for civil rights isn’t because they believe every person should get a fair shot, it’s because they want to stick it to the majority. Even though I’ve personally seen some bigotry from a few people on the right, I know that I as a person of color, will never have to fear any institutionalized racism (By the way, to any DUers that see this, guess who institutionalized racism in our country? The Democrats!) because institutionalizing bigotry or any sort of personal feelings against a person based on what they happen to be is counter to what conservatism is about.
For instance, my former anger management teacher (Another liberal program started with good intentions, by the way) got angry at me because I started sentences with “May I” rather than “Can I”. She thought it was patronizing for a black man to do so. So patronizing, in fact, I got kicked out of the program for “Noncompliance”.
Your average conservative cares about WHO you are, your average liberal will always care about WHAT you are.
