U.S. Navy Ship Outruns Pursuing Pirates
UPI ^ | May 7, 2009

Suspected pirates failed in an effort to attack a U.S. Navy ship off the eastern coast of Somalia. the Navy said Thursday.

Two skiffs, assumed to be pirate vessels, chased the Lewis and Clark, a dry cargo and ammunition ship supporting the Navy's Fifth Fleet, for more than an hour Wednesday before giving up, CNN reported.

During the pursuit, the skiffs fired small arms at the Lewis and Clark and got within one nautical mile before the ship used evasive maneuvers and pulled out of range.

That’s fine and all, but did they then turn around and blow the pirates out of the water?

Too bad it does not say, before the ship engaged the pirates and blew them out of the water.

They couldn't radio in for an air strike?

Oh wait, that takes three days under the current administration...

It was a dry cargo and ammunition ship, not a combat vessel.

Why didn’t the Navy ship fire back? Are we into running from pirates now?

Is this called the new “tuck tail and run” maneuver by the new McObama’s Navy?

“blow the pitates out of the water”

I’m with you AND at a loss for words. Has 0 ordered this so the US doesn’t look like a bully?

I’m not sure a supply ship is armed that way. Maybe that is why they were targeted.

Let's see, a United States Navy ship is under fire and refuses to return fire. Instead, "They ran away."

This is so stupid.

How about sending the pirates an engraved invitation? Or just hoist a white flag on the yard arm?

Time to start re-arming the Supply Ships with 40mm, 3” & 5” deck guns like they had in WWII. Shoot, even a couple of Quad 20mm mounts would wreak havoc with these “Pirates”!

Note to the Chicago thugs now running the US: I hereby give you permission to increase my taxes enough to cover whatever it takes to blow two small pirate boats to smithereens.

Why in the hell didn’t they blow them out of the water. Our Navy gets fired upon by neanderthals in rowboats and we run away??? What have we been reduced to?

It's a USNS vessel - government owned but not part of the combat fleet. They are not armed and do not maintain a full military crew. They actually have a Master with a military adviser, not a USN Captain.

The Military Sealift Command is there to support the U.S. Fleet - I repeat - they are NOT combat vessels.

I looked up USS Lewis and Clark on wikipedia. It’s a Ben Franklin Class atomic sub. Someone got the ship’s name wrong.
