Calif. Panel OKs Honors for Gay Leader Harvey Milk
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | Wednesday, May 6, 2009 | STEVE LAWRENCE

Posted on 05/07/2009 3:25:34 PM PDT by nickcarraway

With encouragement from an Oscar-winning screenwriter, a state Senate committee approved legislation Wednesday that would designate a day honoring slain gay rights leader Harvey Milk.

The Senate Education Committee voted 7-2 to send the bill by Sen. Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, to the full Senate.

It would designate each May 22 — Milk's birthday — as Harvey Milk Day. The "day of special significance" would recognize Milk's life and contributions to the state but would not be an official holiday, meaning there would be no cost to state government.

It also would encourage public schools to conduct "suitable commemorative exercises" in honor of Milk on that day.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a nearly identical bill last year, saying it should be up to each community to determine if it wanted to honor Milk, a San Francisco supervisor who was assassinated in 1978.

Who knows what Milk could have done had his life not been taken so early. I understand his one legislative feat was a “poop scoop” requirement in the SF City codes for people walking their dogs. A great start to what would likely have been an historic political career...

Commemorative exercises. Like a Village People disco day? (Wouldn’t want to give them any ideas, but they are unlikely to look on FR.)

honor Milk, a San Francisco supervisor who was assassinated in 1978.

I don't remember that from history. I thought he was killed.

“What did he actually do that was noteworthy?”

First openly gay San Francisco City Councilman, I think.

We have to stop pretending politicians are important. Even when it comes to people like Reagan. Can’t we name an airport after the guy who invented television, or hold a holiday in honor of Milton Friedman, or something?

contributions to the state

In the one year he was in office he introduced no significant changes in city Government other than acceptance of homosexuality. He is to be celebrated only for his gay activism.

I wonder if the Muslim community in California is insulted by this. Is this Government endorsement of the religion of sexual tolerance?

Perhaps you heard about the effort in Congress to pass so-called
“Hate Crimes” legislation that is a stepping-stone to regulating
the speech of people who support family values.

I just signed a petition to stop such “hate speech” laws from
going into effect. Congress is getting ready to vote on this
issue and I understand this bill could be passed quickly unless
citizens rise up.

Please join me. Go here to sign:

Milk was not assassinated. He, and a the heterosexual mayor, were was killed by a former city supervisor and colleague who knew them both personally and planned on killing two other former colleagues. It’s amazing that a mayor of a large city was also killed in a potential spree killing but all we hear about is the death of a man who liked anal sex.

Will no one honor Dan White?

Dan showed Mr. Milk and the world the risks one takes when stepping outside of bounds of civilized behavior. Milk broke the contract of civility when he politically screwed White and then laughed in his face. With that contract was broken, Dan was free to settle the score in a uncivilized manner. The jury recognized the facts of the broken contract when they found White guilt of manslaughter rather than murder.

Note: I do not endorse White's method of settling the score but I did, as did the jury, understand it.

I remember Dan White well.

Offing Milk and Moscone catapulted another ruthless polititian into an unlikely career: My old friend, Diane Finestein, who was a hopeless lower level S.F. supervisor at the time.

If not for the late Dan White, Diane Feinstein may have never reached the US Senate...she took over for Mayor George Moscone when he was killed.

I knew Harvey Milk before he became a city councilman. Sean Penn’s portrayal was not the person I knew. My memories of him are actually very favorable, albeit, I was a 20+ college graduate who had just moved to San Francisco and was still under the influence of my liberal professors. This was in the early 70’s.

Well, they were recently given something serious to consider by Governor Arnold...legalizing marijuana so that it can be taxed.

Jay Leno hedged his bets...he wasn't sure if Arnold had said he wanted to legalize marijuana or that he wanted to fertilize his llama.

What did he actually do that was noteworthy?

He was helped into power by the "Rev" Jim Jones and wrote letters to President Carter defending him as a person of high character and attacking families who wanted their family members out of Guyana as liars. That was before the Kool Aid. So, essentially, Harvey Milk was an accomplice to mass murder. He knew the guy was dangerous, yet still defended him. That's one morsel of information that was conveiniently "left out" of the recent movie. Big surprise, huh?

What was really needed was a law to have bums curb themselves. Now that would have been helpful.
