Protesters lined a footbridge Thursday in support of Dan Choi, an openly gay Iraq War veteran from Tustin whose job is on the line because he violated the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy.
The gathering of about 25 people marched overlooking Campus Drive, a few feet from a U.S. Army recruitment office, while Choi waited in New York for a television taping. He was set to appear Thursday night on MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show," where last month he publicly outed himself.
Days ago, Choi received a letter stating he would be discharged from the Army National Guard for actions that "negatively affected the good order and discipline" of the guard. The lieutenant, also the son of a Baptist minister, attended the selective military academy West Point, spoke fluent Arabic and served a tour in Iraq.
"It's so absolutely idiotic that the military is letting people go that are the main connection to the Iraqi people," said protester Felicity Figueroa of Irvine.
"Don't ask, don't tell," signed into law by President Clinton in 1993, banned openly lesbian, gay and bisexual Americans from serving in the military. Since then, more than 12,500 women and men have been discharged for crossing the law, according to the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, though President Obama has said he plans to repeal the policy.

Discipline is important in any army. I'd say this boy really isn't military material. He needs to go do something else.
See you later, gay boy.

"Well all know where you've been...you military fairy!"
I want a pink helmet and a pink rifle because i am gay.
The homo violated a policy.. if I violate policies at work I will also be fired. I wonder what makes homos think they can violate military policy and not be discharged?
And it is absolutely idiotic to behave in a way that will get you discharged. The military is not on a witch hunt to find gays, but this guy went out of his way to disobey rules for political reasons.
“In my world, that is about as dishonorable as you can get.”
Exactly.
ANARCHY in the Military is coming!!! Thanks, Liberals!!
Everyone who is not sexually deviant or a violent criminal knows it is wrong/bad/evil.
But “We” are not supposed to say we care, lest we be called bad names, by various sexual deviants and violent criminals.
So... are nonviolent, heterosexual, law abiding citizens the minority, or are we the majority?
I had a soldier that was a turd and really wanted to get out of the Army. First he smoked dope and came up hot on a UA. The while in front of the battalion commander, I was in the room with him he told the BC he was gay. The BC asked, “ Are you really gay?” The troop said, “Sir, I will suck your_____ right now.” Needless to say,he was gone like a freight train.
My son also speaks fluent Arabic, also thanks to the military (Defense Language Institute) He said that when he was there, he saw a good number of people use “i am homosexual” as a means of getting out of their commitment
to the military.
Why are we accepting the media defining them?? He’s not gay, he’s queer.
Wagging your weenie in public is definitely “conduct unbecoming”, and this putz knew it. I agree with you, he did it to get out of service.
They don’t want to do their thing privately, they’re DEMANDING we all approve it and laud them for it publicly.
