Pope Benedict XVI expressed his "deep respect" for Islam at the start of a week-long pilgrimage to the Middle East.
The Roman Catholic Church leader arrived in Amman, Friday, and addressed an audience that included King Abdullah. During his three-day stay in Jordan, the pontiff will meet Muslim religious leaders, and visit a mosque and Biblical sites.
Members of Jordan's conservative Muslim Brotherhood are boycotting the visit, still angry over the pope's 2006 quotation of a centuries-old criticism of Islam.
Benedict will celebrate Mass at a sports stadium in Amman Sunday. Catholics make up less than two percent of Jordan's mainly-Muslim population.
His trip is billed as a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and includes stops in Israel and the Palestinian territories. He is expected to visit sites of significance to Christians and work to improve relations with Muslims and Jews.

popcorn, anyone?
Oy.
Well, that makes one of us...
Uh oh.
I don’t understand why the world is bowing to Islam.
I hope His Holiness has asbestos vestments.
that sez it all!
ah, c’mon Pope, was that really necessary?
Where am I going? And why am I in this handbasket?
Same as one would respect a loaded .44 pointed at one’s head.
Yesterday, the target of their stupidity was the US Navy.
Today, it's the Pope.
Who's next?
They would cut his head off in mecca in a minute and have it shown to the world how they killed the tyrant.
It’s just scary how different countries and leaders are bowing down to Islam ... it’s infuriating! They slam Christianity and Judaism but let those Islamic creeps run all over them ...
Yeah, but take the Popemobile anyway. Remember, the Russians couldn’t get one of their own to shoot your predecessor. They outsourced to a Muslim, who have no respect for Christians, Jews, Buddhists.......
Nuke Mecca, Qom and Medina.
“when MSM bias and ignorance coincide with their own biases and ignorance.”
If he didn’t say it or said something different than “deeply respects” then just provide the quote.
If he did say it, how can you possibly defend it?
No doubt Nick Berg, Danny Pearl, Margaret Hassan and many others too, respected Islam.
Well, I looked up this quote and can’t find anything from the Vatican
http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=pope+deep+respect+islam&ei=UTF-8&fr=moz2
Until I see it in context, I’m seeing words picked out of a sentence. The MSM did it all the time to GWB and the FReepers asked for references. Now since it’s the Pope, it’s carved in stone.
Couldn’t he just hate the sin and love the sinners?
Deeply respects Islam as representing all that is evil.
...and Hawaii can f off....
>>If he didnt say it or said something different than deeply respects then just provide the quote.<<
Until the Vatican releases the quote or you see it on film, you take the word of the MSM.
And we all know how much they love the Pope!
I am sure ISLAM will say the same thing about CATHOLICS!
Perhaps B16 should travel in Muslim countries incognito for a month or so and observe first hand what Islam is all about.
You do know, your Popeness, that if islam had the means to do so, they would wipe out Christianity altogether.
You do know that, don’t you?
I respect rattlesnakes, grizzly bears and scorpions. I don’t particularly care to hang out with them, or have an irrational fear of them, but having a healthy respect for them is probably not an unwise thing.
Who does he respect more, Muslims or Protestants?
Hmmm?????
How stupid is that?
MSM have a long and sordid history of misquoting folks, especially "conservative" religious and civil leaders. HH B16 is one of their favourite targets.
FReepers have a long and sordid history of believing the MSM, when the MSM bias confirms their own.
Why are you defending the notoriously dishonest MSM?
” MSM have a long and sordid history of misquoting folks, especially “conservative” religious and civil leaders. HH B16 is one of their favourite targets... FReepers have a long and sordid history of believing the MSM, when the MSM bias confirms their own.”
What you are saying is, of course, correct.
We just need to see the actual quote.
The burden of proof is on you (or the MSM) who are claiming he said something.
Maybe this is why...... http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2246707/posts
“The burden of proof is on you (or the MSM) who are claiming he said something.”
Actually, I am a disinterested 3rd party.
If you feel the the MSM has defamed your leader then it incumbent upon you to defend him.
Because the Pope believes that Muslims worship the God of Abraham, regardless of how wrong some of their positions are.
I was upset at first, but then read a very detailed and logical discourse on it. While I am not 100% onboard, I do understand it now.
What are you getting at? The Pope is a man of deep respect for all.
Given their thoroughly impeached nature, until they do so I will assume that they are lying.
Again.
As usual.
I note that even disinterested third parties agree that MSM have a long and sordid history of misquoting folks. Anyone who trusts the MSM is behaving a most foolish mannet.
This is exactly why I realized I cannot leave my salvation in the hands of humans. No matter what rituals are performed over me, no matter how many Sunday performances I go observe, no matter how many “responses” I mouth in unison, no matter how many other sinners I tell my sins to, only I am able to go to God and have the audacity to ask for eternity in heaven with Him. And I am only able to do so because He gave me His son, Jesus, who goes with me to stand before God.
My parents can’t do that. My childhood parish priest couldn’t do that. The Christian pastor where I fellowship on Sundays can’t do it. The pope can’t do it, and the cashier at the 7-11 can’t do it. Me. I’m responsible for me.
Thank you, thank you God for sending Jesus to be there with me!
If the Pope had said anything else, anything that contained even a whiff of criticism of islam, how many rioters carrying knives and broken bottles (or AK-47s and rocket-propelled grenades!) could the Pope's security detail have repelled before being overwhelmed?
The Pope is smart: don't rile the savages when you're at their mercy.
I agree we should wait to read the context but I don’t know how you can have deep respect for a religion that teaches that the heart of Christian belief is a lie.
The smart thing to do would be to say he has deep respect for MUSLIMS, not Islam.
BBC News has it
Pope has ‘deep respect’ for Islam

“I note that even disinterested third parties agree that MSM have a long and sordid history of misquoting folks. Anyone who trusts the MSM is behaving a most foolish mannet.”
That is true.
I have seen the media grossly mischaracterize statements by the Pope. But I have also seen Popes make unfortunate statements.
Either way, he’d best guard his tongue while he’s in the Middle East, or else risk losing it (along with his head). It’s only prudent.
You could say the same thing about the Jewish religion, which he respects as well. Again - it all goes back to Abraham.
I think that his actions of respect and love have a great impact on those that hate him (and us). We need peace to be able to talk.
This concept goes against my grain - I’m more of a ‘kill em all and let God sort them out’ person. The “weakness” (in terms of how people view it) of Christianity is hard to adjust to.
No, they don’t “have it”.
Perhaps “Zenit”, or the Vatican press office, will release the entirety of his remarks ... they often do, although usually a day or so after.
