At the core of representative democracy is the secret ballot: when you go into the booth to vote, you vote YOUR values and YOUR will; not the values and will of someone who is out to intimidate you into voting any other way. But Democrats and unions think that kind of individual freedom is dangerous and unfair: better that everyone be forced to vote openly and publicly, so that their version of the fascist blackshirts can pay a visit to their home and persuade them to vote "right."

Liberals are all for "choice" when it comes to killing babies but not for choosing whether to join a union or whether to hold a Christian opinion on gay marriage.
That's the way we think today, but it's actually a relatively new concept. It didn't come into USA till well after the Civil War, with the last state going to it in 1891.
Ballots were cast publicly for over half the history of this country, one reason elections so often ended in riots.

Perhaps we are in some respect defined by the choices we permit others to make.
