Out-of-Wedlock Birthrates Are Soaring, U.S. Reports
New York Times ^ | May 13, 2009 | Gardiner Harris

Posted on 05/13/2009 9:56:44 AM PDT by reaganaut1

Unmarried mothers gave birth to 4 out of every 10 babies born in the United States in 2007, a share that is increasing rapidly both here and abroad, according to government figures released Wednesday.

Before 1970, most unmarried mothers were teenagers. But in recent years the birthrate among unmarried women in their 20s and 30s has soared — rising 34 percent since 2002, for example, in women ages 30 to 34. In 2007, women in their 20s had 60 percent of all babies born out of wedlock, teenagers had 23 percent and women 30 and older had 17 percent.

Much of the increase in unmarried births has occurred among parents who are living together but are not married, cohabitation arrangements that tend to be less stable than marriages, studies show.

The pattern has been particularly pronounced among Hispanic women, climbing 20 percent from 2002 to 2006, the most recent year for which racial breakdowns are available. Eleven percent of unmarried Hispanic women had a baby in 2006, compared with 7 percent of unmarried black women and 3 percent of unmarried white women, according to government data drawn from birth certificates.

Titled “Changing Patterns of Nonmarital Childbearing in the United States,” the report was released by the National Center for Health Statistics, part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Out-of-wedlock births are also rising in much of the industrialized world: in Iceland, 66 percent of children are born to unmarried mothers; in Sweden, the share is 55 percent. (In other societies, though, the phenomenon remains rare — just 2 percent in Japan, for example.)

Illegals? Or American citizens? If they are American Citizens, then QUIT SEPARATING THEM BY CALLING THEM HISPANCIS!!!!!! It's an American problem, it's happening in all nationalities, but as a whole, they make up America.

I guess if the rise is just in Hispanics, then "American whites" don't have to worry so it's not their problem. "African Americans" are safe also huh?

“Or we’ll have a nation of botoxed, viagra-ed, baby as accessory, breast-implanted, porn addicted, cruising sensation junkies strung out on shallow sugar highs and never committing to dignity, values and multi-generational families built on a common legacy.”

That’s a great description of today’s “cool” people.

Well, I guess we can’t blame this on same-sex marriage.

Why not?

The forces pushing gay marriage are the same ones pushing the sexualization of minors, easy divorce, and every other assault on the traditional family.

This is what happens when a society dies. The sacred building blocks of family fall away.

“Sarah S. Brown, chief executive of the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, a nonprofit advocacy group, said sex and pregnancy were handled far too cavalierly in the United States, where rates of unplanned pregnancies, births and abortions are far higher than those of other industrialized nations.”

I thought that the article said that 55% of births in Sweden were illegitimate, but then they included this comment. It is hard to tell where the US falls compared to Europe.

No offense, but you are either naive or ignorant to the obvious!

My wife is Hispanic (was Catholic, the rest of her family still IS) - she has two unmarried sisters: one with two kids and one with three; she has four cousins: all unmarried and either mothers or with child.

We have as many friends as I can count that are single women with at least one child! Many are Hispanic.

“Cutoff welfare for unmarried mothers and watch the rate fall.”

You are 100% correct. I know a couple of people in AZ that did not get married because the combined income would knock them off the public assistance for medical care for the baby. In fact one of these couples actually had a second child before they set the wedding date so the State would pay for the child birth. In my opinion the State should make the mother and father pay back all assistance they receive even if it takes them their entire life. In my world; any public assistance someone receives should go into an account and that person is responsible to pay back that money even if they have to do it with their social security when they retire. You would see the birth rates drop like a rock!

I don’t know. You might want to see how many Catholic Hispanics are having out of wedlock births. I’d bet the number isn’t much different than non-RC Hispanics.

Yep the old saying tax what you want less of and subsidize what you want more of fits here. If there was no check no free housing and no food stamps we’d see the out of wedlock birthrate overnight drop dramatically.I’ve always thought that you should have to work for so many years before you ever think of asking for any help. Our system is completely set up bass ackward.

Please observe the any Asian Community - from well to do or lower, do you see any women: young or older - single, unmarried, pushing baby carriages or having many children with different men? Also take there total percentage of the Asian population in the United States and their success story and one wonders why have they achieved so much in so little time? Plain and simple: it is their strong family structure, their work ethic and also something I was raised with: if you shame yourself, you lose face and at the same time, you shame your Father and Mother and they lose face too. I rebelled and gave my parents many headaches but I thank them for what they did for me, because today I am a better person for it./Just Asking - seoul62......

“(I’ve never seen so many adult men spending a fortune on motorcycles, expensive guitars, sailboats...can you imagine our parents generation doing this?).”

Uh, they did. WW II generation was the worst in this regard. Check out the divorce rate during those times. It was also common for the married man, after coming home from the war, from hell, to find his wife shacked up with another man.

The equivalent of rape to a man is taking his money without any benefit to him. Yet, conservative women support and defend this practice.

A man only gets two choices in life: work or prison. A woman has full multitude of choices. She can have a ‘career’ (remember, only women have careers, men are stuck with ‘jobs’), stay at home, get welfare, etc. etc.

Men have to still sign up for military service to even get a college loan. Do women? No.

Abortion has nothing to do with the ‘right to life’ and all. It has everything to do with letting women do whatever the hell they want, and not letting them own up to their behavior. Contraceptives for women are considered ‘good’ in all cases, contraceptives for men are considered ‘suspect’.

Since men die sooner, they should be able to get Social Security benefits sooner. But this doesn’t happen because like all government services, Social Security primarily benefits women.

Men have no legal power. They are reamed in the courts. A man cannot have an abortion. A man cannot even act in self defense if a woman assaults him. If a man yells back at a woman yelling at him, it is ‘domestic abuse’. If a man decides he has had enough of the crazy wife and runs away, that also is considered ‘domestic abuse.’

I’m 28 and I will never marry due to the legal systems in place, the legal systems that conservative women are desperate to defend with their liberal sisters. Single mothers were what put Obama over the top electorally.

As an American male, I am in value in practically every country in the world to women. I can move to another country and easily find decent non-screwed up women. But Western women cannot. Men from other nations just aren’t interested. So they are stuck in the sinking holes of Western economies.

With women, even conservative women, attacking and degrading men all the time, why are you so surprised to find non-men like Obama up there? He is praised precisely because he is *not* a man. This is what you get after you conservative women went along with liberal women in attacking men.

As western civilization collapses, I will be outside the Anglosphere with a nice cigar. And I will laugh at these sluts getting exactly what they deserved.

[Just look at the post I am replying to, the woman is desperate to blame men... for something, anything. And this is on FreeRepublic nonetheless.]

Atlas is shrugging, but it is men who are leaving the building. After decades of fighting wars, building cities, inventing wonders, men are tired of the vultures. It is time for Prometheus to take back his fire.

It is, though...

a disproportionate amount of these out of wedlock births are to young hispanic women.

And I’ll state the Coulterism again, even though someone jumped down my neck last time:

if a woman makes choices leading to having a baby without a husband, she is intentionally raising a criminal.

Both gay “marriage” and the promotion of out of wedlock births are just different facets of the same policy:

devalue, undefine, and destroy the traditional family.

Orwell touched on this in 1984 - personal relationships were forbidden because they took away loyalty from Big Brother.
