A record number of children worldwide are being born to unmarried mothers as traditional marriage arrangements are being abandoned at a faster pace, according to a report released today by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The report shows that teenagers accounted for only 23 percent of 2007's non-marital births, down from 50 percent in 1970, demonstrating that birth rates for unmarried women in their twenties and over have risen considerably over the period.

In the U.S., nearly 40 percent of births were to unmarried women in 2007, compared with about 34 percent in 2002, according to data first released in March but now being compared with that of other countries.

Damn.

So, when all these kids start having kids, how will they know not to breed with their own father/mother/brother/sister? I have always thought that in a few generations, the inbred population will kill itself off.

Men were involved too. Aren't they also irresponsible?

“Don’t need no stinkin daddy when the gubmint will be your daddy.”

Boy, that’s the truth!

BUT...what do we, as Conservatives, want? Children born and NOT aborted, or do we only care about children born to self-supporting, intact, Mommy & Daddy families?

I’m not being argumentative; this is something I think about nearly every day, and am reminded of when I read articles like this one.

Why the Right isn’t more vocal on adoption versus abortion I’ll never know. Aren’t there enough married heteros available to raise the next ‘lost’ generation?

(I’ve never given birth, but I’ve raised three boys; married a man with a son and two nephews to support; they have been the joys of my life.)

Got my nails done today, a young woman was bragging about her 3 boys, how onrey they are etc. She had a 2 yr. old son and then a set of twin boys...with no husband or father for those kids. Wondering where she should look for a good husband, tech told her, “Why not try church?” ha! All she was looking for was a good time out on the town.

I watched a recent Tyra Banks show in which they were talking about racial differences in hair texture. One of the young women said "I chose someone of a different race when I wanted to have a baby so my child would have 'good hair'."

Well, come to think of it there was also a customer there, a young blond lady with a little dark skinned daughter. I didn’t ask her reason for mixing races.

You ask a good question. If we are succeeding at reducing the number of abortions, then the number of unwed moms giving birth will go up. It would be nice if they considered adoption. I work in a clinic where we try to counsel young (and some older) pregnant women to have their babies instead of aborting. They are not very receptive to the adoption idea though. Most of them would prefer to abort their child over letting someone else raise them.

I find this very strange, but I have done this for several years, and it has been true since the beginning. Overall, we need to decide whether we want fewer abortions, or fewer unwed mothers. They are inversely related to a large degree.

These women want the kids, because the Child Tax Credit and a billion other government programs give them lots of money and benefits. That's what is killing marriage.

The article states that in 2007, 40% of births were to unwed mothers and you are saying that all of them are having kids simply for a tax credit and government programs.

Do you have a source to back up that claim?

Part of the reason for this is the nanny state. The other part is that in this time where intolerance is the greatest evil that exists, having a child out of wedlock is not stigmatized as it once was. There is no shame anymore and shame is a great motivator to do the right thing.

shame can also motivate people to do the wrong thing. Sure, for some people it will keep them from engaging in sexual activity. For others, it will cause them to abort an unexpected pregnancy, so that no one will find out. I have seen an awful lot of bad things happen, because people are trying to avoid shame. A little tolerance is sometimes beneficial.
