Maryland man sentenced after riding bike 180 miles here for teen sex (to NE PA)
The Times-Tribune (Scranton PA) ^ | 5/14/09 | Erin L. Nissley

Posted on 05/14/2009 4:01:58 AM PDT by Born Conservative

A man who rode his bicycle 180 miles to have sex with a Scranton teen he met on the Internet will serve one to four years in prison, a judge ruled Wednesday.

William Wagner, 26, 414 Battery Drive, Havre de Grace, Md., met the 15-year-old girl through the social networking Web site MySpace. In June, he biked to Scranton to meet the teen.

In February, Mr. Wagner pleaded guilty to unlawful contact with a minor.

He slept at Pine Brook baseball field, Sanderson Avenue and Green Place, while he was in Scranton. He took the teen to the baseball field and had intercourse with her there several times, police said.

After he left Scranton, the girl told her parents she had sex with Mr. Wagner, who reported it to police.

The Times-Tribune does not identify sexual assault victims.

The teen told police she considered herself to be "in a relationship" with Mr. Wagner at one time. He knew she was only 15, she told police.

"It was a peculiar set of circumstances, including that he rode his bike to meet her," said Deputy District Attorney Michelle Olshefski. "I think the sentence is very fitting. He acknowledged that he knew her age and what he did was wrong."

After serving his prison sentence, Mr. Wagner will have to register as a sex offender under the state's Megan's Law requirements for 10 years.

Seriously in-shape bicyclists could do it in a long day (15 hrs x 20 m.p.h.)

Most other cyclists could do it in two.

Cheers!

And no punishment for the parents of the 15 year old.
Don’t get me wrong, but there’s no responsibility? nothing that a good parent could posibly do? I think we’re only (once again) hearing one side of the story, But I digress.

As a conservative, I don’t necessacarally advocate punitive action upon the parents, but IMHO, chastizing them at least somewhat is not off limits. Unless you consider the fact that being responsible enough to pay for an Internet connection bill with no reguard in the responsibility of allowing your own children to access it - with no guidelines or rules?

That’s bad, or at the very least, poor parenting.

Lock up a danger to society for ten years (my way would be fifty), but improper parenting lasts a lifetime.

IOW, where are the parents?

Damned teenagers, you can't trust 'em to keep a secret. The first little fight she has with her mom, it's "Oh yeah? Well I've been having sex with Mr. Wagner!" Best to stay away from that kind of thing!

15 hours x 20 mph = 300 miles. He only needed 180.

More like 9 - 10 hours, but a guy who can ride 20mph for 9 hours can get him a real woman, not a 15 year old. Like, maybe, a “Sheryl Crow” or equivalent. ;-)

Thanks, my benchmark was roughly 40-50 miles a day, which I think roughly calculated to 6 hours on the bike, 6 hours in the bar, 6 hours in the pool, and 6 hours in bed.

Was the girl’s name Daisy and was it a tandem bicycle?

You're right, while I was typing I was remembering someone who did the MS150 in Texas -- and back again -- in one day.

No, it wasn't Lance.

Cheers!

I did 20 mph for 75 miles last year as part of the Minnesota MS 150, with a group I tagged along with.

Will do better this year: I'm drafting off of my teenage son, who led the pack on a training ride (he on a mountain bike, competing against roadies.)

Cheers!

Mrs. Tick did that ride one year. But not in one day.

I think it stands for “Masochistic Sorebutt 150”, right?

I can write a better sentence than that. I'm not a reporter though.

It depends. If you're trying to catch up with a group of younger, athletic, attractive women, it's not so bad.

Until your wife finds out at the next rest stop :-)

I remember doing the MS 150 in Minnesota and plopping down at the halfway point in Hinckley, MN, and seeing The Matrix for the first time, playing on a DVD player. Very surreal when you are food and oxygen deprived. :-)

Cheers!

Anybody know how many days it takes to bike 180 miles? I’m curious, and I don’t have a benchmark.

If you're in top shape one, because you'll average 18 - 20 mph or more. The longest stage in the tour de france is just over 100 miles, but includes mountains and the cyclists are going a lot faster than 20 mph.

That’s pretty darn good, actually. Congratulations!

I do triathlons so I train alone, never in a peloton. 17 to 20 mph for about 30 miles is more my speed.

Uphill both ways, though. :-)
