Waldemar Levy Cardoso dies in Rio at 108. The last marshal of the Army.

Died in this Wednesday, in Rio, Waldemar Levy Cardoso, the last marshal of the country that still was alive. The more high position of the Army was extinct in 1967, when had a structural reform in the institution. In the occasion, stayed defined that alone would have promotion of a general to the position of marshal in case of war.

The last marshal of the country was interned in the Central Hospital of the Army, in the neighborhood of the Benfica, and died to the 108 years.

In the 48 years of service dedicated to the Army, the marshal Levy Cardoso participated of the Liberal Revolution of 1924, in São Paulo, of the Revolution of 1930, that led Getúlio Vargas to the Presidency and also of the fight against the rebels of the Communist Conspiracy of 1935.

In the military government that commanded Brazil of 1964 to 1985, Cardoso was a president of the National Advice of Oil, charge that assumed in 1967. In 1969, it assumed the presidency of the Petrobras for seven months and, of 1971 to 1985, was part of the advice of administration of the company.

Here's a tidbit:

Waldemar Levy Cardoso (December 4, 1900-May 13, 2009) was the last living Field Marshal of the Brazilian Army. He is of Jewish Algerian - Moroccan descent and was born on Rua Evaristo da Veiga in Rio de Janeiro. Cardoso graduated from military college at the top of his class in late 1918, making him a World War I-era veteran. He was mentioned in dispatches in World War II. As a lieutenant colonel, he served in Italy as the commander of an Artillery battalion of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force. He lived on Rua Tonelero in the Copacabana district of Rio de Janeiro. [1][2] He died in the Hospital Central do Exército on May 13, 2009.[3]

Having worked in Brazil for many months, I learned very fast that what can be adequately said in English in a few words, requires several paragraphs in Portuguese. I love the Brazilians, but swear they all talk like women and all seem to love to hear their own voices.
