Also, fewer think abortion should be legal “under any circumstances”

PRINCETON, NJ -- A new Gallup Poll, conducted May 7-10, finds 51% of Americans calling themselves "pro-life" on the issue of abortion and 42% "pro-choice." This is the first time a majority of U.S. adults have identified themselves as pro-life since Gallup began asking this question in 1995.

That could be answered by polling a second dimension of how many care about it to cast a vote that would make a difference in governmental policy. 40% of potential American voters last November didn’t vote for any presidential candidate.

Good point. It may also have something to do with the immigration in this country. Hispanics tend to be practicing catholics, and come from a country where abortion is illegal (although there have been attempts to change that).

In a few years, democrats may have to change their platform to restrict abortion if they keep recruiting hispanics.

It is interesting to watch, and to keep fighting this fight every day. God has an interesting way of fixing things sometimes......

Americans in policy have always been pro-life. The problem was many Americans were pro-choice simply because of the exceptions of rape, incest, and life of mother. There was always a majority who supported bans on late-term abortions, requiring parental notifications, and partial birth abortions.

Good news. I am not sure why the shift, though. Especially after last November’s election results.

The far-left has power and is abusing it, turning lots of moderate people more conservative. No matter how much the media reports conservatism is dead, the exact opposite is true. Conservatism is growing stronger and will be motivated to vote the next election cycles.

With Obama's abortion record, and his willingness to allow babies from botched abortions left to die, people are finally getting the real picture about abortion. They are seeing firsthand, the liberals for what they really are, and they have reasons for concern.

Time is on our side because the people who are in favor of abortion are aborting their offspring

I have said that very thing for a long time. And those of us who are ardently pro life are educating our children to know the evils of abortion and all its other related horrors. And they are getting it, and passing it on. I would like to relate a quick but powerful example.

My son, who is entering seminary minor next fall, goes to public school in a fairly liberal area. In his psychology class last year, abortion was a topic of discussion for a very long couple of weeks. He and only one other boy were the ONLY pro life position in the class. They tried every argument under the sun, to no avail. During this time, some powerful videos and photos had come out on the internet, and I showed him some of them and his reaction was very powerful. The next day, he and his one friend decided they would print some of these pictures (aborted fetuses and body parts) and hung them all the way around the classroom.

The reaction was astounding. Some people refused to enter or remain in the room, others stared in disbelief. Almost the entire class became pro life, and ALL of them decided they would need to rethink their position on the issue. The teacher, an unbelieveably amazing former marine, true blue conservative (go figure in a liberal public school) sent me an email telling me how much he loved having my son in his class. While it was his job to allow debate and even argue the other side on lopsided arguments, he allowed my son and his friend to argue this point on their own at their request. It warmed my cockles to hear this story, and I hope it encourages other parents to teach their kids the values they share :)

Duncan (California), Mike Savage, Michael Medved, Sean Hannity and the American People, known as “Flyover Country” or “Rednecks” or “The Radical Right”.

Come to think of it, that’s quite a bit!

That’s a very interesting — probably very valid — theory. They’re aborting themselves out of existence.

The Nov election wasn’t about abortion. It was about the economy and people hating Bush (unfortunate, but true).

I don’t think the election of Barry in any way, shape, or form was an endorsement of his views on abortion.

I have seen those pictures, and they made me shake in horror. They are just ghastly. I don't see how anyone could look at them and not change their mind. I used to be pro-abortion many years ago, but many experiences (way too many) with friends and their situations changed my mind. Oh, and listening to Rush Limbaugh helped, too. (I know from personal experience why he is so feared by the left. He literally changed my abortion stance from teetering on the fence to pro-life in one 15-minute talk with a caller.)

I also think technology such as 3-D ultrasound helps change people's opinion. And this technology will only improve. You cannot look at this picture of a 20-week old baby in utero and buy the line about "extraneous fetal tissue" or whatever they call it. This is a living human being:

How did they word the question?

It they worded it Pro-Life VS Pro-Abortion then I’m not impressed. If they actually worded the question Pro-Life VS Pro-Choice then this is impressive as I would reckon a good 10 to 20% of women would consider themselve “Pro-Choice” even though they themselves might not “choose” to have an abortion.

Secondly, this confirms data too, showing that the younger generations are Pro-Life and it crosses party affiliations.

Thirdly, when you consider the media’s left leaning, this is even more impressive.

IN SHORT, I would wager that the TRUE statistics have Pro-Life closer to 60 to 65% esp among people under 30. But the media and surely GAllop will NEVER report those numbers.

If you don’t believe me, take your own poll.

I have many female friends who are democrats, true democrats. Some voted for McCain as an anti-Obama vote, they were for Hillary. Some voted for Obama, because they gave McCAin a chance, but in the end found him not to their liking.

THE MAJORITY OF THESE LADIES, MOTHERS, ARE ALMOST 90% PRO LIFE UNDER MOST CIRCUMSTANCES EXCEPT INCEST, RAPE, PHYSICAL THREAT OF DEATH TO THE MOTHER, ETC.

Unfortunately you are correct, since most of those who voted for him didn’t care about any policies and even if they did - he never told anyone what his policies were. Amazing gift-reading words and saying nothing, leaving the listener empty, as opposed to Jesus who told stories we still digest and are never filled.

I think the reasons are two: 3-D ultrasounds, as you mentioned, and the fact that Mexican-Americans, Latinos, whatever, must surely be the fastest growing segment of the voting population. They don’t like abortion or gay marriage, which is probably why Prop 8 passed in CA.

That was the conventional wisdom that led the GOP to nominate the anti-Bush. Didn't work out so well.

“that Mexican-Americans, Latinos, whatever, must surely be the fastest growing segment of the voting population.”

You made a very important point. I am a free market advocate and a pro lifer, but social conservative arguments are much more effective in getting Mexican-Americans and African Americans to vote Republican.

Unfortunately, our current party leadership are acting like “me-too” Republicans. Maybe this poll will help?

Good for your son! He sounds like an intelligent and courageous young man!

When I was in high school (back in the mid 80’s) our current events class had to watch some films about abortion, some pro-life and some pro-death. I had never really though much about abortion before watching them. There were two films, one being “The Silent Scream”, that completely formed my opinion for me that abortion was the murder of an innocent child. I was haunted by the images of broken and bleeding bodies for weeks. To this day I cannot stand to look at those graphic images.

Those films and photos are VERY powerful, especially for young minds.

That’s wonderful your son is taking the time to make a difference! I don’t think abortion can be reduced/eliminated until people’s hearts are changed. I hope my kids hold fast to their values as they grow older.

Here is an essay my first grader wrote, completely with misspellings, I just have to share :) They were supposed to explain why others should vote for them for president. She won 2nd place in this category in the district Language Arts contest:

“I would be a good president. I can run fast to an immergensy. I will not tell the army to surender. I will not want ladys to aborshan. I can show good Integrity and I am Trustworthy. I Cooperate with Courage and Respect. I am very kind. I really want to lower the prises of the stores so the poor people can get food and water. We will have freedom and say anything you want to say. That’s all the laws. Vote for me today! Love, *****”

Obviously, she has a little learn about what kind of powers a president has, but I got a kick out of this, and realized she must be listening after all.
