Fierce Florida Fight: GOP vs. RINOs

GOP's Fierce Florida Fight by Jillian Bandes

The tribulations surrounding the GOP’s endorsement of Charlie Crist over Marco Rubio – and the implications it could have for the moderation of the national party - are wrapped up in internal squabbles among Florida politicos.

At issue is Florida’s “Rule 11,” which holds that party members are able to block out a given candidate in a primary election if they deem the candidate unfit to run. After the rule is invoked, no primary race is held – instead, GOP insiders get to decide the election.

In Florida’s GOP, Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer, a friend of Crist’s, tried to invoke the rule to ruin Rubio’s chances before he ever got off the ground.

“Rule 11 was a procedural matter that was logical because of the already official support that Charlie Crist has received, from the majority leader to the Senatorial Committee that has all the resources,” Greer told the St. Petersburg Times blog.

Rule 11 allows the national party to pool its resources on a single candidate, and was designed to prevent “crazies” from entering into an election. If a candidate who would seriously damage the GOP were to gain momentum in Florida, party insiders would be able to procedurally disqualify him.

If Rule 11 was used against Rubio, he wouldn’t receive any of the cash necessary to fund his campaign.

But Greer may have an uphill battle trying to block Rubio. For Rule 11 to take effect, three individuals need to sign off on it. That would be Greer, the state party chairman, and two national committee members – one of whom has said yes, and the other of whom has said no.

“It's meant to be used very cautiously to protect the party,'' National Committeewoman Sharon Day, a longstanding Crist supporter, told the St. Petersburg Times blog. "We have a process and it allows the voters to choose the candidate - and that's called a primary."

Since Greer tried to sabotage Rubio, a flurry of local Florida districts have moved to condemn him. FGOP members in Broward, Brevard, and Hillsborough Counties have made a fuss about “dictatorship” within the state party, and ignorance of the “underlying philosophies of party primaries.”

If the FGOP pulls that stunt, they effectively give another senate seat to the libs.

Jim Greer: "Of all these names the one person who
I believe could do the most for the Republican National Committee is Mitt Romney.
Romney has been successful at every job that he has undertaken. He is passionate.
He is articulate, savvy and has an eye for recruiting those who are the best at their jobs.
Mitt Romney could do wonders for the party. He would be able to provide the GOP’s, get out the vote,
72 hour program with great improvements and he would create a top notch center for Republican organization,
communications, fundraising and creative strategy.
Problem is that I want Mitt Romney to be able to run for President."

I sent a very impolite email to the RNC. Not that they’ll care.

I agree. If we don’t get a fair primary, I won’t vote for the RINO that the GOP “selects” for me. I won’t vote for the Dem, but I will never vote for Crist!

At this point, I’d rather see the GOP fade away to be replaced by a new party than to just vote RINO to keep those “Moderate” (R)’s in DC.

I believe most Gen Xers, particularly those born between 65 to 75 are going to be most conservative. We were children and teens during the Reagan years. I can remember my parents when Carter was president and the worry they felt, and after Reagan how that changed.

I hope the GOP will get away from this mentality of letting the ones who put their years into the party automatically get the nomination. They did this with Dole, McCain, etc. and it is slowly withering the party up.

Gay politician documentary Outrage puts Charlie Crist’s sexuality back in play
May 5, 2009 at 2:36 pm by Wayne Garcia
Just in time for Marco Rubio’s announcement today that he will seek the U.S. Senate seat in 2010 from Florida comes a film that features the man widely expected to be running against him, Gov. Charlie Crist. Outrage appears to be a well told look at the hypocrisy of closeted politicians, done by director Kirby Dick.

The film opens this Friday nationwide but we have not been able to find a Tampa Bay location for it yet. Will update when/if I do.

Here is the synopsis from the Outrage website:

Academy Award nominated filmmaker Kirby Dick (This Film Is Not Yet Rated) delivers a searing indictment of the hypocrisy of closeted politicians who actively campaign against the LGBT community they covertly belong to. OUTRAGE boldly reveals the hidden lives of some of our nation’s most powerful policymakers, details the harm they’ve inflicted on millions of Americans, and examines the media’s complicity in keeping their secrets.

And the long-rumored bisexual life of our governor is a topic for the film, reports Bob Norman, the Broward-Palm Beach New Times reporter who had documented several men who say they have had sex with Crist:

I’m in the new film Outrage about hypocritical gay Republicans. And no, I offer no proof that our governor is gay.

Just a lot of compelling evidence.

The Academy Award-nominated documentarian Kirby Dick — who has compiled an excellent body of work – came to my house to talk about my reporting on Jason Wetherington and Bruce Carlton Jordan, the pair of Katherine Harris campaign staffers who told numerous witnesses they had affairs with Gov. Charlie Crist. The filmmaker interviewed me and retraced some of reporting on those stories for the movie.

Below is from George Washington’s Farewell Address!

Warns against the party system.

“It serves to distract the Public Councils, and enfeeble
the Public Administration.. agitates the Community with
ill-founded jealousies and false alarms; kindles the
animosity of one.. against another..

it opens the door to foreign influence and corruption..
thus the policy and the will of one country are subjected
to the policy and will of another.”

I don't live there anymore, but I know the Hillborough guys, at least the ones I've met, are pretty libertarian. They really don't like RINOs very much.
