Bishop D’Arcy speaks at Notre Dame (shuns commencement for pro-life rally)

South Bend, Ind., May 17, 2009 / 04:18 pm (CNA).- Although he had initially planned to stay away from campus today as President Barack Obama was honored at Notre Dame, Bishop John D’Arcy of Fort Wayne-South Bend, Indiana changed his mind and spoke at a campus pro-life rally.

According to the Fort Wayne News Sentinel, the bishop spoke in front of 2,500 people protesting the university’s award to pro-abortion President Barack Obama.

Initially Bishop D’Arcy had planned to boycott the graduation festivities, however he decided to appear on campus due to the school’s pro-life undergraduates.

"It is certainly the place for the bishop to be here," D'Arcy said. "John D'Arcy's not important, but the office of bishop if very important and it must always be like Pope John Paul II to stand up for life all the time, everywhere without exception."

Last night the bishop began an all-night vigil for students and other pro-lifers on campus.

Poor Raymond Arroyo was doing duty at CNN, discussing ND with a so called priest.

The priest claimed the Catholic Church is evolving.

Raymond did his best but was double teamed by the priest and the CNN reporter.

Such a great example of WHEAT (this bishop and the pro-life crowd) vs. CHAFF (Obama and the ‘Kennedy catholics’ who cheered him).

Oh drats! I was tuned into Fox News! Wish I had seen this interview. Raymond is extremely knowlegable but tends to be overly verbose.

The priest claimed the Catholic Church is evolving.

Perhaps in his diocese but the church is steadfast and unwavering in her teachings.

Why then have we not heard from the Pope????

JPII was not addressing any specific institution when he said those words. He was speaking to Catholics as a whole. Pope Benedict has echoed those same words in his addresses. Did you follow any of the threads this past week when he visited the Holy Land? They were packed with these same statements.

I hear that Fr Corpi will be handing out the diplomas to those who took part in the alternative graduation.

“Why then have we not heard from the Pope????”

You did hear, but you weren’t listening. What in the world do you think Archbishop Burke was doing if not conveying the pope’s sentiments?

You may eventually hear from the pope ipsissimis verbis. But you can rest assured that that’s why Burke accepted the speaking engagement at the prayer breakfast—to fly the Vatican flag and read the riot act to Jenkins.

Indeed, that’s one of the reason Burke was named head of the tribunal in Rome. So many people were saying that it was done to ruin his reform work in St. Louis. Au contraire: it was done in order to have an American in the Vatican at the highest level who could speak to American Catholic issues with the implied voice of the pope echoing in every word he speaks.

But implied voice is not enough for some. Perhaps Benedict will grant you your wish. Perhaps not. But that’s what Burke was doing in Washington a week or two ago. You were supposed to catch on.

The pope cannot and ought not run around the world disciplining the miscreants everywhere. That’s what we have bishops here for. And they got the message from Burke and nearly half of them have spoken out against No Shame U. And I don’t think they are finished speaking. And they are far more effective than if the pope had spoken over their heads.

I get so tired of Catholics who think the pope can wave a magic wand and fix everything. Darn it. Most problems have to be solved at the local level if they are to have credible and lasting solutions. Subsidiarity, my friend, subsidiarity. You undoubtedly favor state and local solutions rather than federal solutions in American politics. The same applies here. If the American Catholic universities are going to be reined in (and I think it’s too late now), the American bishops will have to do it. The pope CANNOT do it for them. Period.

The pope already did what he rightly should do—Ex corde ecclesiae. But the American bishops ignored it—I know because I heard Catholic university faculty telling each other in the mid-1990s not to worry about Ex corde because the bishops had struck a deal with the major universities not to enforce it. After a few years, the word finally came through that the Vatican had told the bishops to enforce it or else. And then it was enforced, sort of, half-way.

The problem does not lie in Rome. It lies here. And the solution has to come from here. And for schools like No Shame, the solution will probably be, in the end, for the American bishops to declare them uncatholic. NSU will simply take it in stride, declare itself to be a “university in the Catholic tradition” and that will make little difference to most of the big donors and to the prestige-calculators in Academia. And then NSU will go the route of Harvard and Yale and Northwestern.

But bringing Burke to Rome was a deliberate move by Benedict (who’s no dummy) to tighten the screws on the American bishops. Instead of a bunch of Italian curia cardinals whom the American bishops could dismiss as “what do they know about the American scene,” now there’s an American at the top of the curial ladder who can conveniently issue statements that the smart bishops in the USA know have the full backing of Benedict himself.

It was done because Burke can't handle a major metropolitan city. I can say that because I lived through it. Good man that he is, the Church is better off with him in Rome than stateside where he ends up on the evening news for losing his cool with reporters who insist on asking stupid questions. That and he has no personnel responsibilities. The boneheaded moves outside the seminary are rather legion around here. Just don't get me started and before saying I don't know what I'm talking about, as a member of the Cathedral choir, I'm in a darn good position to know a lot.

And I don't think Burke speaks for the pope. The pope can speak quite well enough for himself.

What a wonderful decision on his part.

This ND-Obortion scandal will remain a watershed event after which public support of abortion will actually cause headaches for any Catholic.

re:the office of bishop if very important and it must always be like Pope John Paul II to stand up for life all the time, everywhere without exception.")))

Is this a subtle zing at Benedict, who's been AWOL?
