Barack Obama made an unwise commitment during his campaign. Actually he made quite a number of them, but this column will have to settle for dealing with just one: Candidate Obama promised to deliver a major speech to the Muslim world from a Muslim capital. On June 4, President Obama will make good on that promise in Cairo.
What could go wrong with this heartwarming outreach? Begin with this question: Does the president regard Salman Rushdie and Ayaan Hirsi Ali as belonging to the Muslim world, yes or no?
If yes if the Muslim world includes everyone who happens to be born to a family of Muslim origin regardless of their personal belief, and if it includes liberals of Muslim origin, secularists of Muslim origin, atheists of Muslim origin then it seems almost pointless to speak to them all as a distinctive group.
The more likely answer however is no. Almost inevitably, the Presidents speech will address the most anti-Western, the most militant, the most radical Muslims. The decision to speak to the Muslim world is a decision to speak to these rejectionists.
Look at the choice of venue. The President could have spoken from Indonesia or Bangladesh each of them home to more Muslims than live in the Arab Middle East. In Indonesia and Bangladesh, the prevailing forms of Islam are moderate and tolerant. Each of these countries is working to build a more democratic society, more connected to the global economy.

Will those 5,000 schools that Obama wants to “revamp” be turned into madrassas?
Barack Obama’s has blind ignorance does mislead the young and dumb.
I doubt Obama thought it through that much. He's no deep thinker, but anyone dealing with reality knows that Muslim identity is not personal and private, that Islam does not separate the public and private, or state and church. Praying five times a day, there's no way Islam can be private.
But this in all likelihood is just a continuation of the Obama apology tour. He made a start with Muslims in Turkey and I expect more of the same. Frum might be trying to analyze this beyond anything Obama even considered, which would be a mistake in itself.
“Sounds like Frums outreach to write for Bama did not get answered.”
Yup. Having been expelled from the conservative world, the Canadian Frum is reduced to whining on a Canadian paper.
When Frum stabbed Sarah in the back on CBS, I sent him a note, you’ve made your last cent off of conservatism in America. Looks like I was more right than I knew.
Hey Frum....that’s what MUSLIMS do.....and that’s what ANTI-AMericans do....get used to it....
The apology tour continues.
Pray for America
Its Tamerlane's burial cite. Ya can't get more 'cool' than that.
Tamerlane (Timur The Lame) is the Rodney Dangerfield of Mongol (Tartar) Conqueror's - he gets no respect.
What, did Frum all of a sudden decide to criticize LIBERALS? Shock.
