Some scientists say Ida is the missing link
The Washington Times ^ | 3/20/09 | Jennifer Harper

Posted on 05/20/2009 8:07:15 AM PDT by lakeprincess

"This is an incredible piece of hype to popularize a movie and a book. It's hard to believe that this story took off, but the media picked up on very emotional claims about the 'missing link.' It's created good publicity," said Ken Ham, president of Answers in Genesis and founder of the Creation Museum.

If you set aside all the hype and bickering over creationism, this is a very interesting story. Poor little Ida. A short, painful life and now instead of being studied for what she can teach us, she becomes the center of a pointless argument in which no side is going to convince or even sway the other.

Or, as GGG will no doubt dub her: Darwoodius Fancifullious Mythillae.

Has Brian Thomas, MS* weighed in yet?

Some network, I think Discovery Channel, is doing a special on this. It has all the hallmarks of the global warming ‘debate’. After this special is aired, the theory that this is ‘the’ missing link will become a settled fact.

It seems like a well thought out assault, to paint non believers in evolution as irrational mystics, who are no different than those who conducted the salem witch trials.

I am young enough to have been taught evolution as ‘fact’ my whole life. I have never been taught to oppose it, by either my parents or church...yet still it doesn’t pass the smell test for me. Just like global warming, it is part of a malicious alliance of researchers needing something to research and fund, media hype, and feeble minded people (many in the education field) who eat up junk science.

I would be happy to believe in the ‘theory’ of evolution...but first somebody has to prove the theory.

It’s a fossil which begins to fill in the gap between the lemurs and the primates. It’s an incredible find, and it does show features intermediate to the monkeys and the lemurs.

As usual, the press doesn’t get the details right; I am getting through the paper on the Public Library of Science to see what actually was found.

Such a find doesn’t prove or disprove the existence of God, and it definitely doesn’t prove the impossibility of a Resurrection of Christ!

Should have named it Susan, as in Desperately Seeking Susan. We all know that shared similarities demonstrate descent unless they don't in which case they are called convergent evolution.

I read another article that said an international group of scientists studied this monkey IN SECRET for TWO YEARS! Not only that, the guy who found it in Germany found it in 1983 and decided to keep it for over 20 years before deciding to sell it.

This passes the smell test. /sarc

It is considered good freeper etiquette to ping a freeper when talking about them in an open thread.

And, as long as i'm posting to the thread... this fossilized find of a variety or kind of monkey proves no "link" to anything whatsoever, except to the fantasy world of creation whoshipper's attempt to justify their worldly notion that some people think they are related to monkeys. Next month we'll have endless articles telling us all how Ida hunted for food, what tools she made, what she wore, how she communicated within the group and all sorts of other fanciful fairy tales based upon thin air. I can't wait for the laughs.

..oh...tag line redirect!

have a good day

It is fascinating to see a previously unknown creature discovered. However, to think that any amount of fossils prove evolution is an error in logic. The discovery proves only what we know already: that the animal species have similarities, and that some species are more like some others. This does not prove that one complex species can evolve into another distinct species any more than an abundance of very similar Fords and Chevys in the junkyard prove that Fords evolve into Chevys.

Cat Stevens Yusef Islam has called Barack Obama a divine prophetic figure...

http://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/Music/05/18/yusuf.cat.stevens/index.html

CNN: Obama seems to be reaching out to people of all faiths around the world.

Yusuf: I think a person like Obama has some kind of faith in his special role that he has to perform. And that role — if not prophetic — it’s a divine role. It’s helping humanity and people get together and live together and prosper. That’s a big demand on one person, so it cannot happen with him alone. There’s going to have to be a lot of changes around the world. But it is happening.

CNN: There are people who have said you’ve been associated with groups funneling money to Hamas.

Yusuf: Yup. Yeah. So the biggest thing in my life is ... why do I have to defend being charitable? Oh, because somehow, somewhere, somebody got a bit of that money, and he’s on a list, and somebody else is on a list — God almighty! That has nothing to do with me. I’m just trying to be charitable!

No, you are wrong, they have the evidence on this. Ida and his kin built cities and had written language, and just wait until the artist’s renderings are complete which they are working on furiously in order to make it into next years science books. They lived in harmony, had a zero carbon footprint, there was no murder or crime. Some of their early writings warned of their offspring becoming a virus to the planet, and become extremists and the texts say “holding onto vast superstitions and distorted views on the origins of all things”. They were worried about these truths being lost to time and have now been dicovered. All is lost. Even now the Pope is meeting with them urging them not to release the information. Tom Hanks is at the table as well, trying to copyright it all for his next movie. It is reported that priests in Rome and jumping from spires. /sarcasm off

Tons of people are going to believe, this is what they have been waiting for. I said this yesterday, this is brilliant move, they don’t have to have it be true, truth cannot be known now, whatever they say in the media or put in our childrens school books is the truth. This is the most lethal strike you could imagine, this is the turning point, but most don’t realize it. The whole world wants it to be true, they just needed some rallying point, this is it. You have no idea what is coming next ...
