Banning the pickup truck
Las Vegas Review-Journal ^ | 21 may 09

Posted on 05/21/2009 3:57:09 AM PDT by rellimpank

The Tuesday headline was clear: "Obama's new rules will transform U.S. auto fleet."

The Associated Press picked it up from there: "Some soccer moms will have to give up hulking SUVs. Nearly everybody else will drive smaller cars, and more of them will run on electricity. The higher mileage and emissions standards set by the Obama administration on Tuesday, which begin to take effect in 2012 and are to be achieved by 2016, will transform the American car and truck fleet.

"The new rules would bring new cars and trucks sold in the United States to an average of 35.5 miles per gallon, about 10 mpg more than today's standards. Passenger cars will be required to get 39 mpg, light trucks 30 mpg. That means cars and trucks on American roads will have to become smaller, lighter and more efficient."

Eric Fedewa, vice president of global powertrain forecasting for an auto consulting firm, told The AP the changes will make pickup trucks so much more expensive that they'll be used almost exclusively for work.

Oh, heavens. We're growing faint.

The wise and powerful wizard Obama, having loaned taxpayer money to Detroit to "bail them out" -- thus avoiding simple bankruptcy, where the firms might have shed their overly costly union contracts and emerged to renewed profitability -- now simply decrees what kind of cars Detroit will make. He might as well just put Howard Waxman, Charlie Rangel and Barney Frank in the executive offices at the Big Three, in fedoras and double-breasted striped zoot suits like Ayn Rand's Wesley Mouch, Cuffy Meigs, and Emma Chalmers, and have done with it.

He’s going to create a new bureaucracy with this. There will be a limited number of larger vehicles made, and consequently a waiting list of people who are going to want these vehicles. I predict that those who want them are going to have to produce a ‘certificate of need’ to prove that they are entitled to own one of these rarer gas guzzlers. Graft and cheating will result.

I think the confiscation of private retirement savings is a certainty, and I do not believe that the restoration of legal and constitutional government will come in time to prevent it.

I have read the proposal from last Fall. Do you have any further info? I am debating whether to liquidate mine and keep the money or let it go for a awhile.

Last Summer I put all of it into the "Stable Market" fund and have actually made about 2 percent. I am out of work and could really use the money. I don't want to lose the extra ten percent to taxes but I feel it's a wash since I didn't lose any money in the crash.

Here’s what I know:

When I moved to Utah from Ohio nearly three years ago, I saw something I’d never seen before; tractors with THREE trailers on them. Not the one or two trailers I’d seen. THREE.

Barreling down on me in my Toyota Corolla in the Virgin Gorge, up and down, winding through the mountains. Trust me, nothing scares you more than being in a small car and seeing that in the rear view mirror. Knowing there isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell the the laws of physics can stop that thing. I no longer drive into Vegas on my own. I take the St. George Shuttle; my nerves can’t take it. The triple trailers are also a function of fuel efficiency. So here is my question:

Where is the Transportation Safety Czar? We seem to have Czars for everything, for every condition!

Who is responsible for tallying the cost of these triple tractor trailers, competing for road space with the Toyota Corollas and Smart Cars of the world? Shouldn’t someone be in charge of at least counting the casualties?

I’m just sayin...

Although I believe it is too late to matter, those that are neither hot nor cold I too will vomit from my mouth.

Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure... than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.

It is time for a revolution... of more than the mind.

The good news is the current sovereignty rumblings in several states, Montana, Texas, etc...and even California seems to be awakening.

The possibility of sovereignty of individual states was forever decided by Lincoln's war. Now, whatever few rights individual states might still have is decided by the Federal Courts, not by the states and not by the people.

Probably true, we'll all have to use row boats, they're definitely more fuel efficient. /sarcasm

And the poor reasoning behind that begs the question; Is he going to ban tractor trailers as well? I’ve seen one of the crumple zones underneath the rear axles of a tractor on I-95 where the guy couldn’t stop his momentum fast enough and completely ran over the poor Miata. I’d rather take my chances in my pickup. It may not be pretty, but it’s better than being a speedbump.

Time it gets to that point yu will not be able to afford to pay for the gas , let alone the little car.

If you are able to afford what little food that will available to you, you will be doing good.

All this talk about there being a revolution is just that, talk. Oh, there was a revolution allright, it occurred November 4, 2008. Those that call themselves Americans voluntarily handed the government of the United States over to the Communists. There will be bitching, crying, weeping, and wailing. but no revolution.

obama and his deciples are serious about what they intend to do to you and me.

They are two things you can do:
1. Do not turn yourself in.
2. Try to make sure that less come back than go out to take you in.

Because the big bad wolf is coming. It may not be tomorrow. It may be years down the road, but he is coming. How you handle it is up to you.

I LOVE my Chevy Trailblazer! I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee for 7 years before the Trailblazer. My husband NEEDS his truck for his business which, by the way, is a Chevrolet Silverado! It’a hard working truck along with my husband who is busting his butt to make a living with his “very small” business! THIS IS AMERICA, DAMN IT! THIS has got to STOP! Have the majority of Americans become wimps? We don’t let someone especially the POS tell us WHAT to drive!
Obama really does hate this country, doesn’t he? WHY can’t people see how DANGEROUS this man is?
By the way...did anyone see the CEO of GM on Glenn Beck a couple of weeks ago? It was very obvious to me that he was towing the Obama administration line. I think these people are afraid this administration!

“Many areas of the country you have to have 4x4 to go anywhere 4-5 months a year.”

Ahhhh...
You see, Padawan, you aren’t SUPPOSED to be living in the country. In orde to ‘Save The Planet” (ie, CONTROL YOU), and make delivery of services to you more efficient, the idea is to FORCE you out of the country in to “High-Density Zones”, by making it too costly to commute in to the city from outlying areas!

I can’t remember which Obama Socialist Administration minion said this, but it was in an article on FR a couple of weeks ago.

I have a Trailblazer too (the long one...has the third row seat). My husband has a little Ford Focus (great car) that he uses to drive to work...the Chevy is mine (and the family vehicle). We still have three boys at home...our 15 year old had to sit in the back seat of the Focus (he’s 6’1’’) his knees were in his chest. All five of us couldn’t fit in that supposed five seater.

Some ‘Smart Cars’ have hit the roads around me (totally useless vehicle in this terrain in the winter)...but they are frighteningly small. Like they could fit in the cargo bay of the TB...

"Tell Americans that just about all of their cars, trucks, and SUVs will no longer be available and they’ll run out and buy the last new ones around (like light bulbs). It’s working with me. I’m about to buy a large SUV that I have absolutely no use for...but may later on, and I figure it will now keep its value a lot better than my savings."

You're right. Used vehicles are getting pricey. Car dealers have been having trouble keeping up with the demand.

You're better off buying a used car sold privately, and detailing/ cleaning it up and doing any minor repairs yourself. If the dealers and brokers do it, they demand top dollar, because they know they can get it.

He doesn’t “get it” because he does not have a traditional American upbringing.

Oh, that won’t happen. Like it is in the other Communists Countries, the rulers live in luxury. It is the people tha starve and suffer.

In the case of the United States, the decision to turn the reins of government to the Socialists was voluntarily made November 4,2008 by those who called themselves American.

The seeds that they sowed on that day have yet to mature and be harvested. But they will.

I might end up living in it...If the Acorn people don’t report I have one sitting in my driveway when they come to GPS my front door. 0 may decide I shouldn’t have a trailer & give it to somebody else. Nothing will surprise me anymore. What is shocking is that we are letting this happen to ourselves.

I talked to a guy last night who was the regional dealer representative for GM. He quit his job last week. I asked him how cutting dealerships helps the manufactures. He said it does nothing at all to help them.

His opinion is that the dealers are getting screwed big time and he fully expects to see the off-shore automakers come in and pick many of these dealers up and further erode Detroit's market share.

Silly conservative...
You aren’t supposed to even HAVE an RV. RV’s are a sign of bloated wealth, and they must be crushed.

Just think of how many elections could be won by a Democrat... err.... poor people helped with the money you waste on that thing. You just aren’t getting in to the spirirt of change we have now.

You’ll just have to be re-educated to the new way of thinking....
