McCain: Cheney Endorses Spanish Inquisition Technique
The Atlantic Online ^ | Thursday, May 21, 2009 | Jeffrey Goldberg

SNIP

(McCain) was in high spirits, and we talked for a while about the Obama Administration's embrace of realpolitik, Pakistan, Iran, the whole nine yards. But first I asked him about Dick Cheney and his defense of Bush Administration torture policies. He told me of his fundamental disagreement with Cheney: "When you have a majority of Americans, seventy-something percent, saying we shouldn't torture, then I'm not sure it helps for the Vice President to go out and continue to espouse that position," he said. "But look, he's free to talk. He's a former Vice President of the United States. I just don't see where it helps."

And then he got acerbic: Cheney, he says, "believes that waterboarding doesn't fall under the Geneva Conventions and that it's not a form of torture. But you know, it goes back to the Spanish Inquisition."

You could argue that, in the short term, a McCain presidency would have been better for the country, but it would have killed the conservative movement for a generation.

Is McCain claiming that our own military regularly tortures thousands of officers who are being trained to resist interrogation?

If these people wore uniforms and respected the rule of law, then I'd be right with McCain. But, they don't. They operate without regard to any western principles of honorable war. Paraphrasing Churchill, he said that the enemy is the one that defines the rules of engagement. Our enemy, this enemy defines the rules of engagement as anything goes, at anytime towards anyone.

Waterboarding not only ISN'T torture under their rules, it's really just light stretching before the warm-up.

Beside the point. I think Cheney thinks the Geneva Conventions don't apply...because they don't. I guess Sen. McCain wasn't there the day they tought the Senate about treaties.

McCain ran a disgraceful campaign. The only energy it had came from Palin.

Now, when the GOP finally gets Obama on the defensive, McCain attacks the GOP.

Listen Johnie, your years in a POW camp give you no special expertise on torture/interrogation techniques.

If anything, it probably disqualifies you from being rational and objective about the problem of getting information from a zealous fanatical terrorist.

Bottom line is that you have sympathy and empathy for ruthless sub humans who deserve to be treated as combatants who do not wear uniforms....get it Johny...you are uselss on this issue.

You are the weak link.

"When you have a majority of Americans, seventy-something percent, saying we shouldn't torture, then I'm not sure it helps for the Vice President to go out and continue to espouse that position,"

Whom is it not helpful to? It's definitely not helpful to the next group of muslims thinking of killing Americans in a spectacular attack. But of coarse, John McCain and his rat friends want future terrorists to clearly understand that if they get caught they'll be given a free lawyer, free health care, special menus of food three times a day, and a courtroom to use as a platform to spread their teachings of allah. As well as the sympathy of our president and the media.

So yeah, Cheney isn't being very helpful to John McCain and his rat friends.

Torture?

You do no physical harm. No bruises, no broken bones, no blood. Fingernails are intact.

Mentally, the subject is left with his faculties intact. No “zombies”, no frontal lobotomies.

No “pain” techniques.

What do you do? Subject the subject to physical discomfort to the point the subject THINKS he is going to drown.

Heart rate up. Panic.

And looser lips.

IMO, that is NOT torture. John McCain and other POWs were tortured. Limbs broken, muscles torn, blood shed. Prisoners screaming in pain.

THAT is torture.

Once again, the left and the MSM defines the debate.

Liberals are destroying this country, brick by brick.

What McCain endured in Hanoi was real torture.

He was not waterboarded. He was tortured. As a uniformed soldier, he should not have been. But savages don’t always attend to the niceties of the Geneva Convention.

We do. Waterboarding is not torture. Disturbing, uncomfortable, frightening... sure. And the folks we have waterboarded are not uniformed soldiers, so the Geneva Convention is irrelevant anyway.

And as others have pointed out here, waterboarding works, just as real torture worked on McCain. After all, he admits he broke. I don’t blame him for that. Torture is effective. So is waterboarding (which, again, is not torture, and which we have not applied to anyone covered by the Geneva Convention in the War on Terror). Americans are alive today because of waterboarding.

Which is not torture. Neither is putting panties on a prisoner’s head, subjecting him to humiliation, or sleep deprivation, or cold, or offensive music, or psychological abuse, or a bunch of other things that are effective and have saved lives targeted by terrorists and infiltrators, neither of whom are covered by the Geneva Convention, whose language is very plain: http://www.unhchr.ch/html/menu3/b/91.htm

And one other thing. If we agreed to treat our enemy prisoners as they treats our captured soldiers, we wouldn’t need Guantanamo.

Wars are fought TO WIN!!!!!!!!!

There is nothing “FAIR” in war. Fight to Win.

No truer words were ever spoken. He had the opportunity to warn our country about the POS that was elected and he didn't. I will forever be grateful for his service in Vietnam. But it ends there. He really needs to shut up now.

a McCain presidency would have been better for the country, but it would have killed the conservative movement for a generation.

Furthermore, there's no evidence that he would have stepped down in 2012 for Palin. The old coot probably would have ran for re-election and lost, thereby wiping out Palin's chance at being President. In some aspects I'm glad Obama won. The generation that was born after Carter needs to experience what I went through under the Peanut Farmer.
