“Less and less conservatives are identifying themselves as Republicans.”
Count me in.
McCain, Jeb, Mitt, et al, do not speak for me.
Perhaps a constitutional amendment to ban lawyers from serving in the House or Senate would be in order.
To quote Tyrell; “a delicious fantasy...”
The source says that conservatives are up to 66% of the GOP from 60% in 2000 when Bush was nominated.
The last Republican Senator elected President was Harding. He was also the first one, IMHO.

I don’t mean the Presidency.
I mean that no sitting Senator or Congressman is notable even in the simple act of expressing conservative concerns and ideals.
Not one.
They are whimps and wusses.
I have been paying attention to politics for nearly 60 years. In that time the standout leaders among GOP conservatives Congresscritters, at one time or another, were:
Robert Taft
Everett Dirksen
William Knowland
John Ashbrook
Barry Goldwater
Strom Thurmond
John Tower
James Buckley
Jesse Helms
Phillip Crane
Jack Kemp
Newt Gingrich
There were a few others who were good men, but never got much attention. There were a couple who had great promise, but fell to scandals.
Do not expect to find leaders in the Congress, it is not part of the job description for a legislator.

I see your point and agree with your list.
Alas, they are few and far between.
On the other hand, it is harder to tell where an executive stands on all of the issues, since quite a few are strictly national issues, and others are often not a matter of controversy in individual states.
Nobody said that politics was simple or easy.
Jeremy Shock of IL, the youngest congressman, is an EXTREME conservative who wins in a district 40% black and 20% welfare by expressing conservative ideas every time he talks.
Yeah I used the wrong phrase what I meant was an increasing number of conservatives have been identifying themselves as Independents. What is interesting in these polls it is hard to identify shifts. I believe the core GOP has lost some of its blue meat which never was with us to begin with. What I found interesting is that Democrats are also moving into the independent category. That is bad new for Democrats. They may have created a double edged sword by getting so many new (novice) people involved in politics. Buyers remorse it appears is setting in. These shifts also explain how the GOP generic congressional ballot is virtually tied with the Democrats even though the Democrats still have a voter id advantage. This is big problem for them and a big opportunity for the GOP if they stop trying to pander to the Moderates, homosexuals, and prochoicers.
Larry I hope you do run. I’d like to see more people who understand systems and the big picture. What we get far too often are a bunch of people who see no end to the reach of government.
Errr... no..... that's not what I "mean".
If you had seen my previous comments you would have seen that the context is "leadership" and "conservative ideals."
I agree that DeMint and Sessions are conservatives.
They are most certainly NOT conservative thought leaders in the same manner as Rush or even Gingrich.
