The paleontologists even got Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York, to officiate at the public “launch” of Ida (the cute nickname for the fossil), when it was unveiled—like a new sculpture by a famous artist—to the assembled journalists...

Well, a person pays a million bucks for a fossil, their agents don't want buyer's remorse to develop or for the shine to wear off too soon.

I question what will happen to the fossil after the hype balloon deflates and the grant generating studies and papers have been done.
I suspect that like the person that pays top dollar for a mediocre but genuine art work, it will be quietly put away anongst other just so-so fossils.

I was reminded of an art museum that paid big bucks for a sculpture that was found to have dubious provenance. The museum defended their purchase until the furor died down, then the questionable piece was quietly put away, to be spoken of no more.
