Authorities in the German states of Hesse and North-Rhine Westphalia have ordered retailers to stop selling Red Bull Cola after they found traces of cocaine in the fizzy drink. The consumer ministries in the two states confirmed on Friday they had ordered retailers to pull the drink off their shelves after a food safety institute in North-Rhine Westphalia found cocaine in samples of the beverage.
“The institute examined Red Bull Cola in an elaborate chemical process and found traces of cocaine,” Bernhard Kühnle, head of the food safety department at the federal ministry for consumer protection said.
Authorities said the cocaine levels do not pose a health threat but are not permitted in foodstuffs.
The Frankfurter Neuen Presse reported that the investigation was prompted by the use of a de-cocainized extract of coca leaf in the drink. That means the drink cannot be classified as a foodstuff but as a narcotic and needs a special license, authorities said.
The newspaper reported that German retail group Rewe had already issued orders to remove the fizzy drink from its shops. Wilhelm Deitermann, spokesman for the North-Rhine Westphalia consumer ministry said he expected other German states to follow suit and ban the drink.
But Red Bull Cola has protested the action. “De-cocainized extract of coca leaf is used worldwide in foods as a natural flavouring,” the paper quoted the company saying. The company added that Red Bull Cola as well as other food that contains coca leaf extract is considered safe in the EU as well as in the US.
The more popular Red Bull, dubbed the "clubbers' drink," is often mixed with vodka. It contains caffeine, vitamins, and sugar which, the company claims, kick-starts the body's metabolism and keeps people alert.

agreed but this is officially germany right now. it looks like their politicians are on the general banning trip (maybe too much red bull?) right now. same stupid as my country did in the past. reminds me about politicians did have the brilliant idea (because a study said that youth love to drink alcoholic beverage like “bacardi breezer” for example) so lets tax it to “death” so youth can not afford it any longer (of course against the warning of all experts who told them that the kids will just change the brand or will start drink other stuff, or just simple by a bottle of barcadi and a fruit drink and mix it by their self instead of stop drinking). but then again who expect that politicians do think in logical ways. :-)

Who told you that? Cocaine is readily absorbed orally. People snort it because its a more instant high.

Cocaine is absorbed through the nasal and buccal mucosa, NOT ORALLY. Drugs taken orally are absorbed in the duodenum, unless they destroyed by stomach acid, as cocaine hydrochloride is.
Cocaine MUST be snorted, inhaled as smoke in the free base form (as opposed to the hyrdochloride salt), or hypodermically injected.
Why then do mules die when the baloons they swallow rupture?
I’m also curious as to why the leaves have been chewed by the natives for thousands of years in order to get a buzz if the cocaine cannot be absorbed orally.
Perhaps I'm just an ignoramus, but doesn't orally equate to "by mouth", which chewing is? So you are saying that it cannot be absorbed gastro-intestinely, which still leaves me wondering about those dead mules.

BTW 90% of all drugs are absorbed in the duodenum. Absorption in the jejunum, ilium or large intestine is the exception not the rule.
This Red Bull Cola if held in the mouth for several hours, may get some cocaine into the blood system, through the buccal mucosa but not very much.
Honestly have you ever heard of someone swallowing cocaine to get high? Is is hydrolyzed by the stomach acids and not absorbed.
Her professional opinion and direct observation is that cocaine is readily absorbed through the GI system and that the intestinal wall absorbs it fantastically. She suggested that you might want to call your local poison center.
Late guitar slinger Stevie Ray Vaughan used to wander to a plate of cocaine hidden discreetly behind his amplifier between vocal breaks and then return to the microphone very indiscreetly with blow all over his face. His handlers thought this looked bad so they came up with the ingenious idea of mixing cocaine into his glass of Crown Royal.
Did he get high from it? I dunno. He was pretty loaded all the time during this chapter of his career but it is an example of someone ingesting cocaine.

That is completely false. In fact, in much of Latin America, cocaine is primarily absorbed orally, either by chewing coca leaves or drinking coca tea. Absorbing cocaine orally is relatively inefficient, compared to snorting, injecting or smoking (crack), but still produces the desired effects (albeit at a more moderate level).
That being said, the quantity of cocaine in decocanized coca leaves is miniscule. It would be like trying to kill yourself with the cyanide found in apple seeds. This "controversy" is ridiculous.
