LOS ANGELES (AFP) – A 4.7-magnitude earthquake shook central California, less than a week after a pair of similar temblors rattled the highly populated southern part of the state.

The United States Geological Survey said Saturday's quake struck at 2258 GMT, at a depth of just 0.062 miles, and occurred some 7 miles from the town of Keeler, and 200 miles north of Los Angeles.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or major damage.

The reading was based on the open-ended Moment Magnitude scale, now used by US seismologists, which measures the area of the fault that ruptured and the total energy released.

Seems like the Earth is restless. Quakes even here in Dallas/Fort Worth.

What is up with all the earthquakes all of a sudden? It seems that every time I turn around, somebody is getting an earthquake. I don’t remember there being this many earthquakes when I was a boy.

more likely it is because of all the monitoring and reporting of events and such. that tends to raise awareness. well, for some anyway.

This looks to be in the Owen’s Valley, where big quakes rattle no population.

This whole area around Owens Lake is “Rock and Roll”
country. Small quakes almost every day.

Never lived in Eureka. I was there for one day. It is beautiful. Small town-ish.

Follow an earthquake notification service. The USGS is one and a lot on Twitter. There are earthquakes every few minutes.

BTW, the earth is always moving.

I'm guessing the USGS office in Menlo Park is closed for the holidays. No one, every a recent transfer to the west coast, would locate the Owens Valley in central California.

For a myriad of reasons; topographic, geophysical and geomorphic, California has 5 traditional, USGS regions:

1) A coastal region, generally west of the San Andreas fault, usually referred to as the central and north coasts
2) A central, structural trough, often termed the Great Valley or Central Valley which includes the bulk of central California
3) A series of basins and ranges, located east of the Sierra Nevada uplift commonly termed, eastern California.
4) A substantial, volcanic plateau abutting the southeastern flank of the Cascade complex, typically called the Modoc Plateau
5) Southern California, a series of basins and ranges south of the extensions of the Garlock Fault.
