NKorea says it has conducted a second nuclear test

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - North Korea announced Monday that it successfully carried out a second underground nuclear test, less than two months after launching a rocket widely believed to be a test of its long-range missile technology.

North Korea, incensed by U.N. Security Council condemnation of its April 5 rocket launch, had warned last month that it would restart it rogue nuclear program, conduct a second atomic test as a follow-up to its first one in 2006, and carry out long-range missile tests.

On Monday, the country's official Korean Central News Agency said the regime "successfully conducted one more underground nuclear test on May 25 as part of measures to bolster its nuclear deterrent for self-defense."

The regime boasted that the test was conducted "on a new higher level in terms of its explosive power and technology of its control."

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak convened an emergency security session. His spokesman, Lee Dong-kwan, confirmed that a North Korean nuclear test was possible.

In Washington, State Department spokesman Andy Laine said: "At this point, we've seen the reports and we're trying to get more information, but we're not able to confirm at this time."

Seismologists from the U.S., South Korea and Japan reported activity shortly after 9:50 a.m. in a northeastern area where North Korea conducted its first nuclear test in 2006.

The Japan Meteorological Agency measured the seismic activity at magnitude-5.3. Quake expert Gen Aoki noted that its depth was "very shallow."

"The area is not active seismically so it is highly possible that it could be an artificial quake," Aoki said in Tokyo. ... Seismological measurements back North Korea's claim that the test was far stronger than in 2006.

Yes they are because they know he has no fight in him. They are testing him. The GOP should make that point. Dick Cheney, John McCain, Sarah Palin, should say "See I told you so". Joe Biden told you so. What is Obama gonna do now, Iran tests a ballistic delivery system, North Korea tests an even bigger nuke. The question should be a litany. It is in his lap now. What is this foreign policy novice going to do?

Well I figure we knew it was a successful test. This sure does screw up this next week for the Obama administration if the GOP hammers away as they should.

They don’t give a damn about them and they don’t give a damn about torture. They just give a damn about their political goals in relationship to their sexual peculiarities. Truth be told there is not much we can accomplish where North Korea is concerned it is in Obama’s novice hands.

Oh Obama’ll show ‘em alright. Next he’s going to hold his breath, just to show them who’s boss.

If he holds his breath too long, will his lips turn purple?

OK staff, bring the teleprompter to warp speed; we need to come up with something fast.

The midnight oil was burning last night, as the TOTUS rapidly developed a response to the most recent North Korean nuclear test. Shortly thereafter Pres__ent Obama the RIC (reader in chief) was heard to say kind things about the TOTUS, among them the premise that our nation would be lost without it.

Well, someone would be...

However, experts say North Korean scientists have not yet mastered the miniaturization technology for mounting a nuclear device onto a long-range missile.

They may not have the miniaturization technology, but Iran does, thanks to Bill Clinton and Operation Merlin. Given what we know about the presence of Iranian scientists at NK missile tests and NK involvement in the Syrian reactor, this is trouble. Bush had the Axis of Evil 2/3 correct. It should have been North Korea, Iran, and Syria.

Pelosi went to Syria and get them the green light for nukes.

Was she not in China this very weekend, trying to get the media off of her?

“President Barack Obama said a nuclear test would constitute an act of “blatant defiance” of the U.N.”

What you do now Obama?

North Korea Thumbs Nose
at World

North Korea claimed it carried out a powerful underground nuclear test Monday — much larger than one conducted in 2006 — in a major provocation in the escalating international standoff over its rogue nuclear and missile programs. Pyongyang announced the test, and Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed an atomic explosion at 9:54 a.m. (0054 GMT) in northeastern North Korea, estimating the blast’s yield at 10 to 20 kilotons — comparable to the bombs that flattened Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The regime also test-fired three short-range, ground-to-air missiles later Monday from the same northeastern site where it launched a rocket last month, the Yonhap news agency reported, citing unnamed sources.

The rocket liftoff, widely believed to be a cover for a test of its long-range missile technology, drew censure from the U.N. Security Council. North Korea, incensed by the condemnation of the April 5 rocket launch, had warned last month that it would restart its rogue nuclear program, conduct an atomic test and carry out long-range missile tests.

On Monday, the country’s official Korean Central News Agency said the regime “successfully conducted one more underground nuclear test on May 25 as part of measures to bolster its nuclear deterrent for self-defense.”

Unknown Detonation North KoreaAddress:‎ - - Placement on map is approximate North Korea - Category: Unverified listing bbs.keyhole.com This placemarker shows a mysterious bright fireball, 200 feet in diameter and over 255 feet tall. This image does not accurately give the entire time lapse of the event. Therefore, the total blast diameter of the fireball could have eventually been much larger. The the diameter of the 17 kiloton fireball at Hiroshima was .4 kilometers (that's about 1,313 feet). This image appears to still be energetic at a blast diameter of 200 feet. According to reports from CNN.com 9-10 October 2006, North Korea conducted a successul atomic test at 1:36 am (GMT), 9 October2006, 240 miles North East of Pyongyang, in Hwaderi near Kilju City. The 550 metric ton (.606 kiloton) detonation was said to be enough to generate a 4.2 magnitude earthquake readible detectable to U.S. geologists. According to CNN.com, North Korea gave China a twenty minute notice prior to conducting the test, to which China immediately informed the United States. This blast is rather curious considering its location and size.

Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

Chik-tong, P’unggye-yok, (Kilju / Kilchu / Kisshu / Gilju)

P’unggye-yok, Kilju County [Kilchu-gun / Kilchu-kun] is located in North Korea’s North Hamgyeong Province. The county seat of Kilju-gun is the town of Kilju. The town of Kilju-up is fourteen air miles inland from the coast, the farthest point inland for a town of any size along the whole length of the east coastal road.

The Musudan-ri Launch Facility is located on the northeast coast about 30 km southeast of Kilchu. Japanese journalist Eya Osamu reported that there is a Scud missile base in Kilchu-kun, though he did not disclose the exact location of the base. This report remained unconfirmed.

Kilchu is also reported to be the site of an Atomic Weapons Training Center. In January 1958, the Soviet Union helped establish the “Atomic Weapons Training Center” in or near Kilchu-kun, but it seems nothing was heard of this Center since that time.
