Companies, States Vie for $2.4 Billion in Funding Aimed at Turning U.S. Into Top Maker of Fuel Cells for Electric Cars
The Obama administration has set off a gold rush to power new environmentally friendly cars.
In one of the government's biggest efforts at shaping industrial policy, the Energy Department has been soliciting applications for $2.4 billion in funding aimed at turning the U.S. into a battery-manufacturing powerhouse. At the deadline last week, the department said it had received 165 applications.
Companies vying for the federal money include General Motors Corp., Dow Chemical Co., Johnson Controls Inc. and A123 Systems, a closely held battery maker backed by General Electric Co. and others. States including Michigan, Kentucky and Massachusetts are also weighing in with applications, usually in alliance with their favored battery makers.

Well it so far has cost 100 million (+ or -) and utilities paid for it out of O&M cost so I hope we use it for something. Yet we are still required to find a permanent home for spent nuclear fuel (yet more money down the drain). BTW the “Temporary” dry fuel storage at each of the 103 reactor sites is being paid for out of tax dollars (lots of bucks) because the federal government promised Yacca would be ready by now and of course the Democrats (Harry Reid and moon-bats) and Obama have shut it down. Go figure, in their mind it’s safer to have spent fuel at 103 places than 1. Hummm
Electric cars actually run on coal... but don’t bother greenies with little issues like where the power comes from to charge the batteries.
If the jobs aren’t being offshored, excellent.
Democrats are getting ahead of the GOP on fighting outsourcing. Jobs people. Keep the jobs in America.
If it takes protectionism, then let’s have protectionism. If it takes government battery subsidies, then let’s have government battery subsidies.
Selling American factories and jobs - to *communists* was an incredibly stupid idea for Republicans to be aligned with.
The GOP had better wake up.

It won’t turn us into a battery manufacturing powerhouse. All it will do is increase the outflow of tax dollars on a regular basis to companies that have no desire to actually solve anything lest the gravy train quit rolling.
In Kentucky there’s a fine example of one of Obama’s two pronged approaches. Build a large campus with various manufacturers sharing technologies to make batteries which need to be charged with electricity. And at the same time shut down all of the eastern Kentucky coal plants which provide us with all of that nasty unsafe coal. Which provides us with abundant electricity. If his stupidity isn’t enough to sicken you think about this. The main player in the whole effort to locate a site in Kentucky is headed up by a Chicago Attorney named Greenburger who just happens to sit on Barack Hussein Obama’s energy panel and of course makes recommendations to Rahm Emanuel.
