Sorry, someone who supports racial discrimination is a racist in my book. I agree that they don’t view themselves as racists, but neither did many of the pro-segregation activists. Most people think their cause is good.

Yes and no. Heard on the radio that Bush senior cut a deal with the RATS that they (RATS) would get to pick one out of every four appointments, otherwise the RATS would put up road blocks on Bush's picks. Apparently not too uncommon of a deal back in the day.

The media meme is that he kept the balance of the court the same. Hello! The court is not balanced. The court is hard right. O missed one of the most important opportunities of his presidency to move the court back to the center and choose a progressive, and another scary thing; Catholics do not bode well for a woman’s right to choose or gay rights for that matter and that is a known fact that is not even open to interpretation or discussion. If Obama is a centrist then the center has moved so far to the right it is no longer even recognizable as anything but an illusion through rose colored gin bottles on propaganda steroids.
You may indeed be correct that Sotomayor’s lack of judicial temperament may alienate her from other justices and therefore prevent her from being a 5-4 consensus builder.
There is another scenario, however, much worse: she becomes so seedy and unpleasant to work with, dumbs down the court and its traditions, that she essentially guarantees an early retirement for Thomas, Alito, Scalia, and Roberts - who don’t want to deal with her brazenness and related crap. In other words, she is the catalyst to get the good justices to quit and say the Hell with it.... life is too short for this crap.
I disagree... it’s a left-leaning choice, but not horribly radical. First appointed by Bush 41, and she is replacing Souter. The balance of the court remains intact.
