Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE)--who's been giving Barack Obama a tough time of late--has released a statement on the Sotomayor nomination. "President Obama is to be commended for selecting a nominee with a significant breadth and depth of legal experience to replace retiring Justice David Souter," Nelson says, "I look forward to learning more about Judge Sonia Sotomayor's background, record and qualifications -- and to meeting with her to discuss her judicial philosophy -- as this important United States Supreme Court nomination moves forward."
Nelson supported both of George W. Bush's Supreme Court nominees, and gave the previous President wide latitude on judicial and executive nominations in general. But in recent weeks he's become a key obstacle to the confirmation of Dawn Johnsen, who Obama nominated to head the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel months ago. (snip)
As Nebraska's senator since 2001, I have voted on numerous judicial nominees. In each case, I nominated or supported judicial nominees who convinced me they would follow the law, rather than manipulate the law to promote an activist agenda. While my personal views differed from some nominees, I applied no litmus test to them on issues. My main test has always been and remains: Will the nominee follow the law and not make law to fit his or her views?

It’s really not that difficult, Ben.
Just read a couple of her quotes and you’ve got your answer . . . N O
"Is Nelson a Republibot? I mean what frickin' democrat ever says: "In each case, I nominated or supported judicial nominees who convinced me they would follow the law, rather than manipulate the law to promote an activist agenda." Every senator is entitled to their opinion about how to confirm a judge but this is pure right-wing code speak. You have to go to the indoctrination meetings to learn how to speak that way." I love how he contradicted himself. He commends Obama for his selection of a justice with a significant breadth and depth of background and experience, then follows by saying that he needs to learn more about her background, record and qualifications.
“I commend Obama because I’m a party-line Dem and that’s just what I do. Now, who exactly is Sonia Sotomayor??”
I’m a Nebraska repub voter, so Ben could care less what I think. I’ve been calling his local and DC offices, on a regular basis, since the stimulus fiasco. The phone people have been courteous, but they’re a bunch of nervous nellies. If push comes to shove, he’ll tow the party line.
Is it an election year? That’s the only way a Democrat won’t fall in lockstep with their Lord High Master in the White House and follow His orders.
Ben is not up for re-election until 2012.
This little puke will see where the votes are & when he sees that it is clear for him to vote no because she will be confirmed by the dumbocrats he'll do it. Then he can enter back to Huskerville. However, if it can down to only his vote I guarantee he would vote yes.
It’s going to be interesting on what all can be dug up about Sotomayor and if the GOP get all that information out to the public to cause a uproar. I think some senators like Nelson are going to be thinking about if they want a radical left winger like Sotomayor to be a issue in their next election.
I understand your reasoning here. People might just forget by 2012. But if she is as bad as it is looking he might vote no. Quite a few rats could vote no and she could still get in since they have such a good majority and we can't stop our RINO's from voting yes for her.
Slightly more than half of voting Americans have forfeited their rights to citizenship. They are mere subjects now.
Come to think of it, if I were king I wouldn’t want most of them as subjects anyhow.
They’re that stupid...
