Man has no regrets defending Oklahoma City pharmacy (Hero possibly be charged)

Pharmacist Jerome Ersland talks about a fatal shooting that occurred at Reliable Discount Pharmacy in Oklahoma City. Photo by Sarah Phipps, The Oklahoman

Jerome Ersland was back at work Thursday filling prescriptions and hoping that by taking the life of a 16-year-old boy two days earlier, he had saved others. Advertisement Click here to find out more!

Rubbing an oversized bandage on his left forearm, where he said he was grazed by a robber’s bullet, Ersland related details of what he said was a highly organized hit on the Reliable Discount Pharmacy.

"I just regret anybody would get killed,” Ersland said. "But if I wouldn’t have been here, there would have been three people killed — the other pharmacist and the two techs.”

He also recalls the angry voices of people who gathered outside the pharmacy Tuesday night, shouting that he was a racist who unnecessarily took a life of the Seeworth Academy charter school student, Antwun Parker.

"There were a lot of black people gathered out there yelling and everything at my boss,” Ersland said.

I read about this in a related article. The mother of the teen who was killed is in total denial about her son’s culpability. She’s claiming her son was a good kid who wasn’t there to rob the store and that she hoped the shooter realized he “took her baby.”

I’m sorry the kid died - it’s a shame when anyone throws their life away, especially when it’s someone so young. That said, it doesn’t change the fact that this young man’s fate was the consequence of his *own* actions, and no one else but he is to blame for what happened.

I'm not sorry. He got exactly what he deserved. I don't care if he was 16, 17, 18 or 48.

"There were a lot of black people gathered out there yelling and everything at my boss,”

Oh cry me a river, now every time some dipsh!t from the black community takes a dirtnap while in the commission of a crime is a racial issue.(not that it hasn't been happening for some time now.

How about every time this happens throw the victim in jail for a hate crime and let the government pay the perps family a million dollars for pain and suffering and insensitivity.(/sarc)

this crap is going to continue driving a wedge and force a confrontation if not an all out race war in our society.

This shoot based on the article was good but lesson here for folks like this hero is to shut up till grand jury no bills the man defending himself against the punks.

My opinion.

If I had to guess, I speculate the police will say something like he was OK to shoot the kid once, but that subsequently emptying his firearm into the kid’s chest when the kid was down and not a threat was an excessive use of force.

If I had to guess further, I speculate the Police will posit that he did not need to give chase with his Judge, and that he could instead have held the kid (Antwun?) at bay with it instead.

And all of that would be possibly technically true — from a second-guessing viewpoint. Thus proving the uselessness and futility of Hindsight.

It will be interesting to see how this case pans out.

The headline does not match the article. I did not see where the police said he might or would be charged for self defense. The black racists harassing him for self defense stink.

...shut up till grand jury no bills...

Excellent advice, this guy must not have a lawyer or this story would never had made print.

From the article describing the getaway driver: "I pulled out my ‘Judge’ and pointed it right between his eyes and he floored it,” Ersland said."

Now that guy gets it! I wonder if he was about to eat .45 or 410?

True, but the mark of a 410 would probably more closely resemble spagetti

Last line of the story is the most important part IMHO

"I was able to return fire and protect the girls’ lives. God was helping me.”

Yes in the old language it means:
his destiny was to be food for the ants or the ants won because he was stupid enough to stand up to someone who wasn't going to take his crap.

I hate what’s happening to me.

I used to be anti-racist, and now I feel like I’m becoming one.

We have a President who became President without any record, without any reason other than being “black.” And now other “blacks” feel entitled to “greatness” because of their ethnicity. And I’m resentful.

And I feel indignant. And I feel that my “racism” is wrong.

So a “black” assaults someone and is killed. And other “blacks” take offense.

What am I supposed to feel? What are “they” supposed to feel?

What a mess. If only we could fricken do away with with this color/ethnicity thing....

You need to click the link and read the whole account. There’s nothing grey here. It appears that three robbers made a very organized hit on this pharmacy and the two girls barracaded themselves in the back. The man who defended himself was shot at first. He had people to protect. I’m not going to second guess his pursuit of the second robber that initially fled, he had no idea if the attack was ending or if bad guy number two was going to get more guns or friends. Good call in this case as it appears that there was a third in the car possibly with a shotgun. Would they still have driven away if he had not confronted the car or would they have armed up and gone back in for their other guy? And in this circumtance I’m giving him a no-devil’s-advocate pass on making sure the first bad guy stayed down. He was in a position of leaving an enemy standing behind him. That was never an option in this fight.

It’s hard, but try to imagine yourself in that situation. You’ve got two to three people attacking your business. It’s a tiny total war happening in your building and you are the target. You either fight with the willingness to kill or you die. You have mere seconds to choose.

Those bad guys rolled the dice with death when they started that attack. There’s no “over and safe” with multiple attackers until they are absolutely not moving or long gone from the scene. He made sure the one getting up was down for good, then he made sure the others were long gone and his two techs were safe. Insanely brave for a man with a permanent back brace.

It doesn’t matter what the skin color was, this attack was going to end with that first one dead no matter what his skin color was and that is ALWAYS preferable to the victim dying.

Pray for the soul of the sixteen year old. The young man made choices that cut his life terribly short. That was the saddest part of this. And give thanks that all the victims are still alive. That is truly good news.

I agree. Not only that, but this saved the taxpayers a lot of money over the years, not to mention the lives of this thug’s future victims. If this “youngster” had lived and been arrested, he would have been out on the street in no time doing the same thing.

Even if he might have “overreacted” to the attack by shooting “excessively”, it was more of an impulse thing due to defending yourself rather than some intent to be “racist” - some people without experience panic when they shoot someone in self defense, which may mean shooting a few times.

Praise God he was able to stop the robbery and not be killed in the situation he endured. Let’s pray that local officials deal rightly with all involved. No one should live under the threat that because of the race of one (the perp) that justice should be skewed and the criminal set free and the victim pay. Our country is under a new PC legal system that rewards the criminals in order to not offend them. We cannot survive this.

Having a son and a daughter-in-law who are pharmacists, I have worried about something like this happening to them. It makes it much worse that they are not allowed to bring a weapon into the store. Private owners can decide for themselves if they have a weapon nearby but the corporate offices make that decision in chain stores.

Of course, they couldn’t wish anyone a Merry Christmas either.

She’s claiming her son was a good kid who wasn’t there to rob the store and that she hoped the shooter realized he “took her baby.”

Wasn't her "baby" shooting at a handicapped man and defenseless women? Were they "easy pickings"? These jokers cased the place, they knew what they were doing. What they didn't know is that their intended victim would open fire.

While this is a personal tragedy for this lady, it's not like he was some bystander or a customer standing there in the line of fire and getting shot by accident.

That's exactly how it is.

If this ever made it to a jury, I would vote "not guilty" because the man acted the way he did because he was in genuine fear of his life and there was no other way out of it.

If he had military training and that kicked in, well, that's just too bad for the perps.

Don’t they have a firearm with the brat’s prints and/or DNA on it? He should have dropped it when he was shot.

He had three attackers, he was wounded already in his hand. If the first attacker was getting back up, presumably STILL WITH A GUN IN HIS HAND, the pharmacist was totally justified in putting this deadly threat down and making sure the threat was stopped before turning his back to deal with the other two.

Stuff and nonsense. Her "baby" (Why always "baby"? These perps are usually at least teenagers. There's something really sick going on here ...) threw his life away committing violent felonies, and SHE HELPED HIM DO IT.

Folks, I live in OKC and I can tll you the ‘Average Joe on the street’ is horrified. The DA is named Prater and everyone is in shock over his filing of charges.

I took the time to read the Wikipedia entry for ‘Make My Day Law’, and noted the ‘excessive force’ disclaimer. And, I did watch the pharmacy videos.

However, if one reads the verbage of the OK ‘Make My Day Law’, there is no qualification - not even addressing - the idea of ‘excessive force’ in the application of deadly force as covered by the law. Period.

http://www.oscn.net/applications/oscn/DeliverDocument.asp?citeid=69782

I am not a genius, but it seems pretty cut-and-dried, black-and-white: those fellas were in the process of committing an unlawful act, and the employee(s) were in fear of imminent peril of bodily harm or death. Done and done. Open Season.

Like Heinlein said: ‘An armed society is a polite society’. That’s why we in the South always say ‘Please’, ‘Thank You’, ‘Yes Sir’, and ‘Yes Ma`am’...

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I’ve seen soooo many parents these days who excuse or try to excuse bad behavior by their children with the “he’s my baby” line or something along those lines. In almost every case, the child has been indulged beyond brattiness and to the point they think they can do whatever they want without consequences. The hard truth in this case is, if her “baby” had respected the lives and rights of the other people in the pharmacy, he would still be alive right now.
