Specter, Casey praise choice of Sotomayor for Supreme Court

Pennsylvania's U.S. senators praised Judge Sonia Sotomayor's nomination as a Supreme Court justice.

As a Senate Judiciary Committee member, Sen. Arlen Specter, a Democrat, will have an opportunity to question Judge Sotomayor during her confirmation hearing later this year. He supported her nominations as a federal district judge by President George H.W. Bush and to the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals by President Bill Clinton.

"I applaud the nomination of Judge Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. Her confirmation would add needed diversity in two ways: the first Hispanic and the third woman to serve on the high court," Mr. Specter said in a statement. "While her record suggests excellent educational and professional qualifications, now it is up to the Senate to discharge its constitutional duty for a full and fair confirmation process."

With Mr. Casey traveling in the Middle East, his office issued a statement. In it, Mr. Casey, also a Democrat, said the judge has had "a long and distinguished career" as a judge and a prosecutor.

"Judge Sotomayor certainly has a compelling life story and would bring a unique perspective to the U.S. Supreme Court," he said. "Prior to the Senate vote on her confirmation, I will consider Judge Sotomayor's academic credentials, legal experience, judicial temperament, character and judicial philosophy."

This will be Mr. Casey's first chance to vote on a Supreme Court nomination. During his 2006 Senate race, he endorsed President Bush's nomination of Justice Samuel Alito.

“the first Hispanic”

Since she was born in New York, and both her parents were born in America - how many generations do we live through before you become an American?

“needed diverity” ?

Oh such nonsense. Good grief, these people make life or death decisions. This “divesity” crap doesn’t have an effing thing to do with it.

Such a shame it’s come to this. And especially from lawyers. They should be the first ones demanding competence on the bench, not giving a rat’s about what someone looks like.

This is the Bobby Casey who the bitter end people said would be no different than Santorum. The same Casey that implied his pro life credentials were no different than Santorum.

Ah yes, the "richness" of her experiences will add colourful new threads to our "cultural tapestry." < / barf >

Now I know for a fact that these two, at least, have sold their souls to the Devil.

Only for the sake of accuracy, Just exactly when did you have this epiphany?

The same Casey that implied his pro life credentials were no different than Santorum.

So now he's proven himself to be a filthy rotten liar. However, the word liar has become synonymous with politician and just doesn't seem to have the same sting it used to.

Let’s review. Appointed to the appeals court by Bush #1. Specter was assisted in being re-elected by Bush #2.

#1 A new world order
#2 Bail outs

Specter, yelling his comments up from bottom of the well the Democrats tossed him down.

"Hello!? Hello, up there!? Anybody? I think it's a good choice!"

No, I heard yesterday both parents were born in the United States. It was the grandparents from PR.

PR however enjoys American passports.
