The Franchise for Felons: Sotomayor Would Let Prisoners Vote
The Washington Times ^ | May 28, 2009 | Editorial

Posted on 05/28/2009 7:39:44 PM PDT by Abakumov

Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor wants to give jailbirds the right to vote. It's her opinion that the federal Voting Rights Act can be used to force states to allow voting by currently imprisoned felons.

That is absolutely insane. And what’s worse is there are people on “our” side that say that she’s a lesser evil, and we shouldn’t fight because it’s useless. I hate to be the bearer of bad analogies but this is akin to choosing to arm a murderer with a knife instead of a pistol, simply because less damage will be done. Meanwhile the rest of us sit back and wonder why we’re arming them in the first place.

There is no right to vote. Voting is a privilege. All we have is a right not to be denied the vote for a few explicit reasons, for instance race, gender, and age (once you’re over 17). If ever there was a good reason to discriminate between possible voters—and states absolutely can discriminate, just not in the aforementioned manner—having committed a felony is it.

If blacks and latinos are disproportionately represented in the prison population, that’s their problem.

Get her on unpaid taxes or an illegal nanny/housekeeper. Judging by Nobie’s cabinet picks, this WH ain’t all that when it comes to the vetting process. If Pubs aren’t afraid to dig, they’ll find something.

Folks, there is no grand strategy behind Obama’s choice for the SCOTUS.

He is a closet Marxist.

Sotomayor is the kind of judge he wants - One that will produce any ruling that is he wants.

This isn’t rocket science. She should be laughed out of the hearing room.

Any chance we can make this woman so “toxic” that a few Dems defect?

That's the best thing we could do. Let the Republicans play the "We'll withhold talking about what we might do, until after the hearings," while Freepers and other real Americans put pressure on Rat Senators from red and purple states.

Anybody got a current list of the Senate Judiciary Committee makeup, including state and party?

So let's see, you're in jail for flaunting they laws you representatives passed for the protection for you and others, but your loyalty to those laws should be rewarded by letting you elect those lawmakers whose laws you disregarded

Perfect liberal logic.

Nothing "closet" about Obama.

Regarding Sotomayor's idea of forcing prisoners to vote, that be the first time most of them would have ever obeyed an order.

This alone should be enough to keep her off SCOTUS.

If (and that’s a big “if”) the media ever get this fact out, public opinion may turn against her. Voting is a privilege, not a right for criminals.

Well, once again this simply reveals that she is the perfect Obamanoid. The Democrats want felons to vote, because most felons vote Democrat—especially with ACORN to help them pull the lever.

Then there’s also the insane asylums and the demented patients in rest homes, two other favored groups.

Get her on unpaid taxes or an illegal nanny/housekeeper.

One of her great attractions for Zero is that she's childless, so no nannies. Finding an illegal housekeeper is an option since she's been divorced since 1983, no Mr. Mom at home to do the cooking and the dishes. It would not be surprising if she hired fellow Hispanics of dubious documentary status.

However, the vetting process might have been more thorough than Bubba's was on this issue. I think that with her years as a trial judge, there are many hours of transcripts of her oral decisions that can be gone through. There might be an interesting divorce file on her as well. Divorce is not so slam dunk in NY as it is in the no-fault states.

Prisons are usually set up under some sort of “state institution” deal that does not allow the prisoners to become residents of towns, counties, etc.

Thanks! On that list, it looks like we might be able to put some squeeze on the Rat Senators from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and possibly Oregon. Sotomayor has serious issues with the Second Amendment, and those states do have a fair number of hunters.

On the GOP side, I'm looking for Senators Sessions, Kyl, Cornyn, and Coburn to be her chief worry. I expect Hatch, Grassley, and Graham to be total weenies when it comes to standing up for freedom.

‘Bread and Circuses’ is the cancer of democracy, the fatal disease for which there is no cure. Democracy often works beautifully at first. But once a state extends the franchise to every warm body, be he producer or parasite, that day marks the beginning of the end of the state. For when the Plebs discover that they can vote themselves bread and circuses without limit and that the productive members of the body politic cannot stop them, they will do so, until the state bleeds to death, or in its weakened condition the state succumbs to an invader - the barbarians enter Rome.... Mine was a lovely world till the parasites took over.

SPOILER ALERT this is how the hearings will go:

Republican asks tough question.

Sotomayor's answer: Well I don't want to prejudge that.

Republican asks us for money to fight the nomination then votes to confirm her anyway. ...

2 years later Republican says we have no choice but to vote for them or else there will be nobody to fight Obama.

The democrat heirarchy has posed Sotomayor as an affirmative action promotion not so much to shield her from Republican questioning but to prevent any democrat Seantor who knows what's good for them from voting against her. The Pubbies just aren't mentally or politically able to see that stark fact!

Ms. Sotomayor's dissenting opinion in a 2006 felon-voting case should make senators extremely wary of confirming her for the high court.

But it won't. They are all spineless drones.

Under Sotomayer the prison population will be way down since the criminal justice system clearly discriminates against people of color.

Expect a change in crack cocaine laws since they adversely impact minorities. I mean why should the penalties for crack (minority drug) be different than for blow (rich white man drug)?

This is the wisdom we will see from a Latino woman who clearly has superior judgement than a white male.

Under the Judiciary Committee rules if no Republican votes for her, the nomination can NOT go to the floor.

It is up to the Republican committee members to stop her. But it doesn’t look like they have the ‘cajones’ to do it to a Latino woman Obama nominee who is unfit for office.

We need a really vicious series attack ads against this "person" and the Dems in general.

Put pictures of murderous gangsters (all races, but don't be afraid to use "minorities") on the TV along with their names, crimes, and the names of their victims and say “Sonia Sotomayo and the Democrats want this person to vote. I wonder what his victims would say about that?"
"These victims can no longer speak for themselves , but don't let their murderers silence them. Call 1-800-xxx-yyyy and tell you Senators, Representatives, President Obama, and Sonia Sotomayor what you think of this plan.”

Keep it up 24/7 until 2010. Its not like there is any shortage of material.
