China's Anger at North Korea Test Signals Shift

By JAY SOLOMON in Washington and IAN JOHNSON and GORDON FAIRCLOUGH in Beijing

North Korea's nuclear test this week has deeply angered China, a mood shift signaled in statements showing that influential Chinese thinkers are coming to see Kim Jong Il's regime as a liability.

The change in attitude doesn't indicate China will support punishment that could threaten the stability of its neighbor. China appears ready to support modest sanctions at the United Nations Security Council, along the lines of the restrictions on North Korean companies it has supported in the past.

But commentators from China have been stinging in their criticism since Monday's test. "North Korea has become a major problem for China," says Zhang Yushan, who works for a government think tank in Jilin province, near the North Korean border. "It has become a dangerous player in the world." [North Korea Trade]

It is impossible for outsiders to gauge how such statements reflect the views of those setting Beijing's foreign policy. Still, signs of Chinese anger over North Korea's nuclear test are raising hopes in the Obama administration that Beijing will eventually take stronger action to restrain Kim Jong Il's increasingly confrontational regime.

Since China has expressed disappointment but eventually balked at putting real pressure on N. Korea, China's changed tone can alone guarantee its action with teeth. We have to just wait and see if China manages to throw monkey wrench again into any move toward serious sanction.

North Korea has been China’s proxy since the Korean war.

If China really wanted something different, it would be different.

A hint from the ChiComs that they liked the message Pelosi delivered?

Anyone who thinks that Communist China is going to change its way towards North Korea...are very naive.

Com China quietly enjoys this North Korea belligerence....it allows Commies to rile the west without Com China directly being blamed

Of course, the Free Traders will continue to hinder how we handle the situation. As long as we Free Trade with Communist China, we (the US) will always problems dealing with Communist China and its allies. Until we dump the failed Free Trade philosophy that values bad economics over national and regional security....we will never be able to adequately deal with Communist China and its Mini-Me...North Korea

Also, the Chinese aren’t directly involved. The Chicoms gave the nukes to Pakistan (they probably still have instructions in Mandarin Chinese) and they gave missiles to NK. Then the Wacky pakis sold the nukes to the NK and got missiles in return.

Well, the official Chinese press only publishes what it’s governmental masters allow... so the Chinese government is allowing these views to be aired.

And if the Chinese government is now permitting these views, then perhaps their might be a slight change in their policies.

Personally, I think China really just wants to wait out Kim Jong-Il. They know he’s not long for this earth, so they’re probably hoping he just croaks soon.

“If China really wanted something different, it would be different.”

It is possible that they may have different agendas now. Kim Jong Ill is dieing. He may want to go out in a blaze of glory, (OR A NUCULAR BLAST) after all he doesn't have much to lose, unlike China's leaders.

Talk Japan into Going Nuclear.

This will accomplish two goals.

Give China Payback for letting this mess get this far.

Scare the Crap out of North Korea.

Krauthammer is right. We need to start talking about arming up Japan with nukes. That will focus China’s attention a little better.
