"On the other end of the spectrum, it was traditionally Democratic states that earned the title of "least free," according to the study. Rhode Island, New Jersey, and New York-all of whom voted Democratic in the past three presidential elections-came in at 48th, 49th and 50th, respectively.
However, it is important to note that the study's findings do not all fall along these predictable party lines. Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Louisiana, for example, all fall in the bottom eleven among states with the most Personal Freedom. Arkansas, Texas, and Missouri, meanwhile finish fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively in that category. According to the authors of the study, while conservative states do perform better than liberal ones, it is moderately conservative states which are in fact the freest."

Lamh Foistenach Abu!
Homeland Security needs to be informed....
Connecticut should be 50th considering the biggest employer in the state is the state of Connecticut.
Studies like this are worthless without studying the methodology. Does being pro-abortion = freedom? Does more pot smoking = freedom? Does more gay norming = freedom?
Rather than ranking states, I’d rather see a percentage of how “free” each state is and then compare those percentages after four years of Obama/Socialist rule.
Top 5 Free-est.
5.) Texas
4.) Idaho
3.) South Dakota
2.) Colorado
1.) New Hampshire
The 5 Least Free
5.) Maryland
4.) California
3.) Rhode Island
2.) New Jersey
1.) New York
The fact that such a survey has to be taken says a lot about how our freedoms have been eroded...mostly through our own neglect sad to say. Solution: for every law passed repeal 10 until we get back to the original commandments. /Hah!
I see...

Including “ liberal sociopolitical “ agendas like homosexual marriage and such would naturally hurt the scores of conservative states like Texas.
See post two.
It is dangerous to attempt to cure cultural problems with legislation.
If you like liberalism then I hope that you live in a liberal state.
I don’t and I do. More’s the pity.
I am talking about federal legislation, of course.
I don’t know what brought that up on this thread.
We are all free Americans; correction, we used to all be free Americans.
The mere fact that the are pushing it, makes it something to be avoided.
Must have missed this one when I read the Bill of Rights.
We are all free Americans; correction, we used to all be free Americans.

Sorry for the crudeness, but that’s the way it is.

I rate the states freedom based on 2 things government control and police abuse of power. Here is my take on freedom:
Freest: Vermont
#2 Montana
#3 Maine
#4 New Hampshire
#5 Idaho
Least Ohio
#2 Texas
#3 Florida
#5 California
#6 New Jersey
Look at were you can be arrested for minor offenses, how many people are in prison per 100K, how many cops there are, how much the state tolerates bully police abuse. I see very little police presence in VT, MT, ME. In Texas they take cash from motorists, beat people, taze people, put innocent people on death row. That is NOT freedom.
Link to police beatings: http://carlosmiller.com/2009/05/28/oklahoma-cop-pulls-ambulance-over-puts-emt-in-chokehold-while-patient-lingers/
Look at the federal prison maps, there are none in VT, MT, ME, NH. WY, ID!

Look at WHERE the Taser deaths are..... CA, FL, TX.... NOT in VT, MT, ME, NH, ID, WY: http://forums.starnewsonline.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/1661088265/m/3621082047/p/3

Here what a truly FREE state did: http://data.opi.mt.gov/bills/2009/BillPdf/HB0228.pdf
Vermont, NH, ME, ID are similar. In TEXAS you have the MOST restrictions about WHERE you can carry a concealed pistol. New York does issue upstate, and there are very FEW places you cannot carry. In TX if your gun even “prints” through your clothes you are ARRESTED! I have never been harassed by NY police ( I am from vermont), but EVERY time I travel through OHIO I am stopped, harassed and “checked out’ just b/c I have out of state police. Is that FREEDOM?
I think you might be a Troll. We’ll see.
I just heard today on local talk radio, from a very reliable host, Vicki McKenna, that Wisconsin will be as heavily taxed and fee-ed to death as California if our lame governor’s “budget” all gets passed. It will, we are dominatied by libtards here. I think Wisconsin deserves to be in the bottom 5 in the Freedom Index. Our capitol city, Madistan, is the Berkeley of the midwest. It don’t get much worse than that. Tofu and bean sprout eating sandal wearing marxists.....grrrr.
I am noting the 5 free-est states, for possible relocation at retirement age. I like the western states, but NH is not my cup of tea. TX, ID, and CO look good. Low property taxes are a must. We get robbed here on those. It’s a crime what they steal from us every year.
“I think you might be a Troll. Well see”
No, I am just pointing out the facts. Been to many of those states. I don’t know about you, but I don’t feel comfortable with lot’s of police around me. If you don’t like NH thats fine, but TX? Stay in the Northern Rocky Mtn state states of MT, ID, WY or even WA. Colorado is LOADED with liberals from CA, and the police are known to be too aggressive. Denver police harass people for open carrying handguns in city limits. You won’t hear that happening in MT, ID, WY. I like VT b/c I can walk down Main St in Burlington at 2AM and the police won’t even look at me. Try that in a small Texas town!
I apologize to you. I see your points.
“Must have missed this one when I read the Bill of Rights. “
Please don’t make the mistake of thinking that your rights are your rights because they are spelled out in the Bill of Rights of the Constitution.
You have many rights just by virtue of being a human being.
Just because something is not in the Bill of Rights doesn’t mean it is not your right.

IMHO, it's a 'you say tomato, I say toMAtoe' kinda thing.
The liberty to grow and injest a weed vs the State telling me what I can and cannot grow and injest. Conservative or liberal? Do I need the govt to protect me from myself or not?
The State telling me what I can or cannot do with another consenting adult. The govt can't legislate what is or is not a sin or what marriage in the eyes of the Lord.
I can't do the comparison with abortion because that involves taking the life of another.
Just some thoughts as I'm mainlining coffee to awake fully!
...Good point. BTW, Welcome to FR...
oi...don’t we know it.
Those happen to be 3 of 4 most populous states in the country. Do you think that might be a reason why more people are tazed in these states?
Did you realize that more people die each year of natural causes in Texas than in North Dakota? See, that proves that living in Texas is dangerous. You should stay as far away from Texas as possible.
We are still free. Only those that have not lived under the yoke of tyranny and haven’t stopped to think about the current situation could make such statements. The Liberals want you to think that you’ve lost. Demoralization is a key in their strategy.
When the Libs said the same thing during the Bush years, I posed the same questions that I do now...what have you lost? How are you less free?
The State telling me whether I can or cannot carry box-cutters on an airplane. Or whether I can or cannot collect spousal benefits if my cat gets sick or dies. Everyone can define freedom in their own way.
You'll be paying high property taxes in Texas because Texas has no state income tax. Property taxes are generally how they make up the lack of an income tax.
As long as you aint some damn yankee tryin' to start sh!t at 2:00 am you can go armed. The police are the least of your concern. I would pop your stupid @ss if you trespassed onto my property, armed, at 2:00 am in small town Texas. I would have to call the sherriff to notify the coroner.
Maybe CO then. I have relatives there. My Aunt pays per year, what I pay per month, in property taxes. She’s in CO Springs. I’m in southern WI. Granted our properties are quite different, but CO has way cheaper property taxes than WI. Love Colorado and visit every fall. I have a few years before making any real decisions on where to bug out to upon retirement. Heck the way it’s going, maybe I’ll be the farmer who doesn’t retire, I’ll just spade away...
I have family in Colorado too. It is a beautiful place to live but it is becoming a bit too popular. CO Springs is largely conservative. Focus on the Family is headquartered there (they fled California years ago). I know Colorado has a state income tax and they now have Democrats in power of state government which my sister regularly frets over. They could use some conservatives to blunt all the Californians moving into the state. Good luck.
NH and CO won’t be on that list too much longer unless they through off the rat yoke.
I wonder where Illinois is, 6th?
Yep. Define “FREE”.
Great article and report.
I downloaded the PDF.
Thanks so much for posting.
In my state, you can kill a baby in the womb, but you can’t have a cigar bar or casinos.
Hey, ho, way to go, Ohio!
